Book excerpt: Shifting Sands is a collection of short stories about relationships — not only between men and women, but between families, extended families and even cultures. Most of the stories are rooted in the culture and traditions of the Nairs of Kerala, but any reader can identify with these well-told tales, because the building blocks of all relationships are universal. Some of the life situations central to the stories may not be acknowledged, much less talked about, even in this ‘liberal’ age, but Radha Venuprasad discusses them frankly and with sensitivity. All the stories revolve around strong people who are not afraid to be themselves. There is Renu, who decided to keep her love child. But at what price? There is Shiva, who, despite his commitment to his wife of many years and their children, found himself drawn towards and taking responsibility for a beleaguered young woman. Then there is Dhruva, an affluent, gifted doctor with a secret, Aruna, for whom the stars foretold a violent end, and Ammu, Markanday and Seema, whose lives intermingle and turn conventions upside-down. Read also about Anita, whose tragic past intrudes into her idyllic present, about Minikutty, a chip off the old block, and how Gopala Menon unwittingly sets off a chain of events that shake the very foundations of his ancient family when he lets a young writer live in a house on his sprawling premises. Written in simple language, Shifting Sands is an easy read, and is sure to engage the interest of anyone who picks it up.

As Melita dwells on the irony of life, she takes readers through a poignant journey of hope, faith, fear and love. Melita’s recollections of life in the quaint village of Merapara in Kerala; her first meeting with her cousins and the adventures that follow; the harsh realities of life ; and the sights, sounds and smells of a time gone by are so vivid and forthright that one feels an instant connection with every character, which grows deeper and stronger through the passage of time. Melita also recounts the special bond she once shared with Manna, her cousin, hoping it has the strength to fight all odds and work a miracle. When K walks into her life, Melita sets out on a journey of self-discovery and realisation. Fighting the turmoil and conflicts within, she gradually understands that life throws more questions than answers. Can she make peace with herself and accept life as it is, warts and all? Can she weave a colourful rainbow that defies the many challenges? Myriad emotions, feelings and hues are beautifully woven together in this wonderful tapestry of love and longing. Lucid… poignant… Some of the pages hold the subtle fragrance of things thought lost, strange yet familiar, making one cling on to the feelings of being unsettled. - Dr. Swetha Antony, University of Delhi.

Book Waist Number 42

Download or read book Waist Number 42 written by Khushi Mohunta and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The future of our society permits acceptance as cards. As credit cards are to banks and balances, waist cards are the new credit cards to societal acceptance and equality.” It starts right from the birth cradle – the way you perceive, judge, accept, or question. The school premises is not only a place where children learn etiquettes of life, it is wrapped up in a dual shade. A house of wisdom and learning for the curious ones, while a place of bullying, mocking, and casting hoaxes on others for the bullies. But, as they say, “Patience has an endpoint.” Certainly, you cannot deal and go through all those outbursts of bullying, pangs of teasing, seclusion, and alienation with you every random day. It ain’t a ritual and neither are you a deity that it is ought to be worshipped on you every day. Then there comes this time where you are in a fix, a dilemma indeed – to speak up for yourself or choose to go with the flow, the flow that society sails you in.

Book The Forgotten Bishops

Download or read book The Forgotten Bishops written by John Fenwick and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malabar Independent Syrian Church is the smallest of the jurisdictions into which the St Thomas Christian community is divided today. It has, however, played a crucial role in the development of the Syrian Churches, whose stories can not be told without it. The present work shows how the bishops of this tiny, one-Diocese Church, now largely forgotten, once stood at the centre of the events that shaped the present ecclesiastical situation.

Book National Paradigms of Migration Research

Download or read book National Paradigms of Migration Research written by Dietrich Thränhardt and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2010 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The varying traditions in the migration research of different countries are closely connected to the respective national political landscape and the way in which the respective national state views itself - affirmative and positive or perhaps more self-critical. Seen side by side, much emerges to be discussed and challenged that was previously beyond doubt. The present volume introduces the reader to the traditions of migration research in twelve different countries: the more traditional immigration countries of Canada and Australia, four European countries with decades of experience (United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Netherlands), countries newer to immigration such as Italy, Poland and Japan, and finally the postcolonial countries of India, Malaysia and Nigeria. Through this comparative approach this volume presents a new approach to understanding the different research traditions. The reader is confronted with the various ways in which emigrants are included or excluded from society, thereby gaining an understanding of the existing intellectual discourses as well as learning to qualify them in the light of other solutions and traditions. Because the approaches of the respective migration research tradition are not always the same, the volume is attractive for a number of professionals: Sociologists, political scientists, ethnologists, economists, and philosophers can join together to discuss the terms migration, integration, and their relationship to social structures. This in turn challenges premises that previously were held to be a matter of course.

Book Impossible Citizens

Download or read book Impossible Citizens written by Neha Vora and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian communities have existed in the Gulf emirate of Dubai for more than a century. Since the 1970s, workers from South Asia have flooded into the emirate, enabling Dubai's huge construction boom. They now compose its largest noncitizen population. Though many migrant families are middle-class and second-, third-, or even fourth-generation residents, Indians cannot become legal citizens of the United Arab Emirates. Instead, they are all classified as temporary guest workers. In Impossible Citizens, Neha Vora draws on her ethnographic research in Dubai's Indian-dominated downtown to explore how Indians live suspended in a state of permanent temporariness. While their legal status defines them as perpetual outsiders, Indians are integral to the Emirati nation-state and its economy. At the same time, Indians—even those who have established thriving diasporic neighborhoods in the emirate—disavow any interest in formally belonging to Dubai and instead consider India their home. Vora shows how these multiple and conflicting logics of citizenship and belonging contribute to new understandings of contemporary citizenship, migration, and national identity, ones that differ from liberal democratic models and that highlight how Indians, rather than Emiratis, are the quintessential—yet impossible—citizens of Dubai.
