Book The Unnatural History of the Sea

Download or read book The Unnatural History of the Sea written by Callum Roberts and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity can make short work of the oceans’ creatures. In 1741, hungry explorers discovered herds of Steller’s sea cow in the Bering Strait, and in less than thirty years, the amiable beast had been harpooned into extinction. It’s a classic story, but a key fact is often omitted. Bering Island was the last redoubt of a species that had been decimated by hunting and habitat loss years before the explorers set sail. As Callum M. Roberts reveals in The Unnatural History of the Sea, the oceans’ bounty didn’t disappear overnight. While today’s fishing industry is ruthlessly efficient, intense exploitation began not in the modern era, or even with the dawn of industrialization, but in the eleventh century in medieval Europe. Roberts explores this long and colorful history of commercial fishing, taking readers around the world and through the centuries to witness the transformation of the seas. Drawing on firsthand accounts of early explorers, pirates, merchants, fishers, and travelers, the book recreates the oceans of the past: waters teeming with whales, sea lions, sea otters, turtles, and giant fish. The abundance of marine life described by fifteenth century seafarers is almost unimaginable today, but Roberts both brings it alive and artfully traces its depletion. Collapsing fisheries, he shows, are simply the latest chapter in a long history of unfettered commercialization of the seas. The story does not end with an empty ocean. Instead, Roberts describes how we might restore the splendor and prosperity of the seas through smarter management of our resources and some simple restraint. From the coasts of Florida to New Zealand, marine reserves have fostered spectacular recovery of plants and animals to levels not seen in a century. They prove that history need not repeat itself: we can leave the oceans richer than we found them.

Book Encyclopedia of American Literature of the Sea and Great Lakes

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Literature of the Sea and Great Lakes written by Jill B. Gidmark and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea and Great Lakes have inspired American authors from colonial times to the present to produce enduring literary works. This reference is a comprehensive survey of American sea literature. The scope of the encyclopedia ranges from the earliest printed matter produced in the colonies to contemporary experiments in published prose, poetry, and drama. The book also acknowledges how literature gives rise to adaptations and resonances in music and film and includes coverage of nonliterary topics that have nonetheless shaped American literature of the sea and Great Lakes. The alphabetical arrangement of the reference facilitates access to facts about major literary works, characters, authors, themes, vessels, places, and ideas that are central to American sea literature. Each of the several hundred entries is written by an expert contributor and many provide bibliographical information. While the encyclopedia includes entries for white male canonical writers such as Herman Melville and Jack London, it also gives considerable attention to women at sea and to ethnically diverse authors, works, and themes. The volume concludes with a chronology and a list of works for further reading.

Book Bounty The Greatest Sea Story of Them All

Download or read book Bounty The Greatest Sea Story of Them All written by Geoff D'Eon and published by Formac Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of two thrilling generations of Bounty. First, the original eighteenth century British Naval Transport ship, on which the most infamous mutiny in British naval history played out. Pulling together details from various contemporary accounts of these events author and filmmaker Geoff D'Eon tells the tale of a harsh leader cast out to sea who miraculously finds his way back to England. Then comes the glorious twentieth century Hollywood recreation of Bounty from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Her crew spend delightful weeks in the South Pacific. Years later, Bounty fights for survival as her captain sails her straight into violent Hurricane Sandy. A dramatic rescue effort saves the crew, but the ship, the captain and one young crew member are lost. Spanning four centuries, this is a story of romance, risk, exotic travel, cruelty, lust, loyalty, jealousy, misadventure, hubris, heroism and death. Fully illustrated with paintings, photographs and artifacts, this book tells one of the greatest sea stories of them all.
