Book Sustainable Forest Management

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Forest Management provides the necessary material to educate students about forestry and the contemporary role of forests in ecosystems and society. This comprehensive textbook on the concept and practice of sustainable forest management sets the standard for practice worldwide. Early chapters concentrate on conceptual aspects, relating sustainable forestry management to international policy. In particular, they consider the concept of criteria and indicators and how this has determined the practice of forest management, taken here to be the management of forested lands and of all ecosystems present on such lands. Later chapters are more practical in focus, concentrating on the management of the many values associated with forests. Overall the book provides a major new synthesis which will serve as a textbook for undergraduates of forestry as well as those from related disciplines such as ecology or geography who are taking a course in forests or natural resource management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural resource accounts provide useful information for integrated resource management through the identification of both market & non-market values. This report begins with a review of previous studies investigating the theory & application of natural resource accounting. It then presents a natural resource accounting case study for the Foothills Model Forest region of Alberta that details value estimates for market components (forestry, trapping, agriculture, minerals, visitor-related industries, & the rest of the economy) & non-market components (recreation, subsistence resource use, environmental control services such as carbon sequestration, and biodiversity maintenance). The resulting natural resource account represents a baseline of values that can be used to assess the progress of Weldwood of Canada Ltd. toward specific objectives related to resource management goals.

Book Carbon Budget Accounting at the Forest Management Unit Level

Download or read book Carbon Budget Accounting at the Forest Management Unit Level written by Martin Von Mirbach and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report has been prepared in response to an identified need to provide guidance to forest managers seeking to report on a carbon budget at the scale of the forest management unit. Key concepts, tasks, and methods related to carbon budgeting are first reviewed, and a few points gleaned from research carried out in Canadian model forests are summarized. Carbon budgeting is then explained with reference to three distinct tasks: obtaining a baseline measurement of the amount of carbon in a particular forest at a given time; measuring the change to that stock over time; and evaluating the likely impact of various management activities on future changes to the carbon budget. Information needed in order to apply these steps is given, with a focus on how to use existing inventories to record carbon stocks & fluxes. The report concludes with a listing of some activities that could help to store carbon in forests.
