Book History of the New Netherlands Province of New York and State of New York

Download or read book History of the New Netherlands Province of New York and State of New York written by William Dunlap and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this two-volume set, first published in 1839, students and history scholars will find William Dunlap's extensive history of New Netherlands, an area from the St. Lawrence river to the Delaware Bay, stretching from the coast westward through what is now upstate New York. The Dutch landed at Noten Eylant, now Governor's island, and quickly spread their settlers over the territory they wished to claim. They further acquired Manhattan Island, founded New Amsterdam, and took up trading in earnest. Dunlap chronicles the many treaties signed with the local Indian tribes and details for readers how the various areas of the Northeast came to bear their current names. In this volume, he also discusses the intrusion of the English into New Netherlands, Holland's battle to retake its colony, and the eventual ceding of the colony to England for good. Volume I ends with the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. American historian and playwright WILLIAM DUNLAP (1766-1839) was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He managed the John Street Theatre and the Park Theatre in New York. Among his many plays are Andre (1798) and The Virgin of the Sun (1800).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Privileges to Rights connects the changing fortunes of tradesmen in early New York to the emergence of a conception of subjective rights that accompanied the transition to a republican and liberal order in eighteenth-century America. Tradesmen in New Amsterdam occupied a distinct social position and, with varying levels of success, secured privileges such as a reasonable reward and the exclusion of strangers from their commerce. The struggle to maintain these privileges figured in the transition to English rule as well as Leisler's Rebellion. Using hitherto unexamined records from the New York City Mayor's Court, Simon Middleton also demonstrates that, rather than merely mastering skilled crafts in workshops, artisans participated in whatever enterprises and markets promised profits with a minimum of risk. Bakers, butchers, and carpenters competed in a bustling urban economy knit together by credit that connected their fortunes to the Atlantic trade. In the early eighteenth century, political and legal changes diminished earlier social distinctions and the grounds for privileges, while an increasing reliance on slave labor stigmatized menial toil. When an economic and a constitutional crisis prompted the importation of radical English republican ideas, artisans were recast artisans as virtuous male property owners whose consent was essential for legitimate government. In this way, an artisanal subject emerged that provided a constituency for the development of a populist and egalitarian republican political culture in New York City.
