Book AC and DC Network Theory

Download or read book AC and DC Network Theory written by A.J. Pointon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever the field of human activity-domestic or scientific, work or leisure-it is likely that some knowledge of the behaviour of electrical circuits is required to keep the processes moving, the wheels turning. In many cases, a knowledge of Ohm's law may suffice. In others, an understanding of more complex relationships may be necessary. In this book an attempt is made to provide, in a concise manner, an introduction to the main methods of treating electrical networks, whether they be carrying direct (de) or alternating (ac) electrical currents. Clearly, the range of possible circuits is vast so that the simplifications which are demonstrated in the pages that follow are of great importance to the student. However, to gain the fullest benefit from such a concise presentation, the student must devote some time to the exercises which are provided in Appendix B. The units used throughout the book are those of the International System (or SI). The various quantities which are introduced-such as current and potential and resistance-are summarized in Appendix A together with the symbols used to represent them, the unit associated with each quantity and the formula used to derive that unit from four fundamental or MKSA units.

Book excerpt: This fundamental alternating current (AC) theory book, now in its second edition, offers a user-friendly approach and practical examples to keep industry professionals up-to-date. Designed to provide a thorough introduction to AC theory from its production, to its uses and circuitry; AC Theory, 2E uses the basics of direct current theory to explain the various facets of AC theory. The book begins by covering the primary components of AC circuits, such as resistors, inductors, and capacitors. The chapters that follow build upon the basic principles learned in these chapters, gradually introducing increasingly complex topics such as applying AC principles in power generation and generators, parallel and combination circuits, and more. With updated sidebars that provide a real-world context for the topics covered, users will develop strong connections between theory and applications, preparing them for work in the electrical field.

Download or read book Nuclear and Particle Physics written by R.J. Blin-Stoyle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to give a clear and concise introductory account of the basic ideas underlying nuclear and elementary particle physics. The attempt throughout is to convey a sound physical understanding of the structures and processes encountered. It assumes some knowledge of elementary quantum mechanics, particularly the treatment of angular momentum, and the rudiments of special relativity. In addition to 'standard' calculations based on this knowledge, frequent use is made of 'order-of-magnitude' and 'dimensional' arguments. In this way it has been possible to give some discussion of quite advanced topics and recent developments. Although reference is made from time to time to the apparatus of nuclear and particle physics no technical detail is given. My basic hope is that students using this book will acquire a sound understand ing of what nuclear and particle physics is about and will wish to learn more. I am indebted to Dr David Bailin and various (nameless) referees for penetrating and helpful comments on parts of the text.

Book Smart and Power Grid Systems Design Challenges and Paradigms

Download or read book Smart and Power Grid Systems Design Challenges and Paradigms written by Kolla Bhanu Prakash and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Smart Grid represents an unprecedented opportunity to move the energy industry into a new era of reliability, availability, and efficiency that will contribute to our economic and environmental health. During the transition period, it will be critical to carry out testing, technology improvements, consumer education, development of standards and regulations, and information sharing between projects to ensure that the benefits we envision from the Smart Grid become a reality. Today, an electricity disruption such as a blackout can have a domino effect—a series of failures that can affect banking, communications, traffic, and security. This is a particular threat in the winter, when homeowners can be left without heat. A smarter grid will add resiliency to our electric power system and make it better prepared to address emergencies such as severe storms, earthquakes, large solar flares, and terrorist attacks. Because of its two-way interactive capacity, the Smart Grid will allow for automatic rerouting when equipment fails or outages occur. This will minimize outages and minimize the effects when they do happen. When a power outage occurs, Smart Grid technologies will detect and isolate the outages, containing them before they become large-scale blackouts. The new technologies will also help ensure that electricity recovery resumes quickly and strategically after an emergency—routing electricity to emergency services first, for example. In addition, the Smart Grid will take greater advantage of customer-owned power generators to produce power when it is not available from utilities. By combining these "distributed generation" resources, a community could keep its health center, police department, traffic lights, phone system, and grocery stores operating during emergencies. In addition, the Smart Grid is a way to address an aging energy infrastructure that needs to be upgraded or replaced. This book shows that Smart Grids can address energy efficiency, to bring increased awareness to consumers about the connection between electricity use and the environment, bring increased national security to our energy system—drawing on greater amounts of home-grown electricity that is more resistant to natural disasters and attack.
