Book Population Estimates for Peary Caribou and Muskox on Banks Island NT July 1982

Download or read book Population Estimates for Peary Caribou and Muskox on Banks Island NT July 1982 written by J. A. Nagy and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latour (1985) conducted a stratified strip transect aerial survey of Banks Island in 1982. We re-analyzed the data using current standard statistical methods and measured linear distances and areas using current GIS technology. The population estimates derived for Peary caribou and muskoxen during our analyses did not differ significantly from the original analyses. The area of Banks Island surveyed in 1982 was originally over estimated, as a result when we extrapolate the results of our analyses to the island, the mean estimates for the number of Peary caribou and muskoxen numbers are approximately 950 and 1,600 higher, respectively than the results of the original extrapolation. Maps showing the distribution of non-calf and calf Peary caribou and muskoxen on the island are provided.
