Book The Effects of Early Social Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children

Download or read book The Effects of Early Social Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children written by The St. Petersburg-USA Orphanage Research Team and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undertaken at orphanages in Russia, this study tests the role of early social and emotion experience in the development of children. Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a certain extent the dementias have been forgotten diseases until just recen tly when they were brought to the attention of the general public and health authorities as a result of the increasing number of cases in the aging popula tion, especially among famous people, and because of the efforts of private foundations. The goals of the present volume are to present the dementias to health prac titioners, to provide some basic information on their epidemiology and biolo gical basis and to discuss the diagnostic and clinical problems that physicians and institutions face when caring for demented patients. This book explores the various types of dementias and is not limited to Alzheimer's disease although, as expected, more information is available and presented on this pathology. On the other hand, a few fundamental questions on dementia can only be answe red through a comparison of the various forms. Examples of such questions are the following: Is the loss of cerebral tissue sufficient to cause dementia? Are there thresholds or is there a continuous progression toward the irreversible development of dementia? Are there common pathways in the dementing pro cess? Are there common risk factors? Comparative analysis allows the common and distinctive patterns of the various dementias to be defined, ultimately lea ding to more focused therapeutic interventions.

Book Neurologic Complications of Cancer Therapy

Download or read book Neurologic Complications of Cancer Therapy written by Eudocia Quant Lee, MD, MPH and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurologic side effects of cancer therapy can inhibit treatment, can be dose-limiting and can diminish quality-of-life. Neurotoxicity related to cancer therapy is a common problem in oncology practice and in clinical neurology. Recognition of neurologic complications of anticancer therapy is necessary due to potential confusion with metastatic disease, paraneoplastic syndromes or comorbid neurologic disorders that do not require reduction or discontinuation of therapy. Neurologic Complications of Cancer Therapy provides comprehensive coverage of the recognition and management of neurologic symptoms related to cancer therapy. The book includes sections on systemic therapy discussed by both agent and adverse event. The section on adverse events is particularly valuable to clinicians, allowing them to consult by symptom in cases where multiple agents have been administered and the source of the complication is uncertain. The systemic therapy section includes coverage of immunologic agents, biologics, and targeted therapies. The book also features sections on the complications of radiation therapy, complications of surgery and high-dose chemotherapy, and stem cell transplantation. Neurologic Complications of Cancer Therapy Features: A widely recognized team of editors Systemic therapy covered by therapeutic agent and by adverse event, enabling a "problem-oriented" approach for the clinician Coverage of newer modalities including immunologic agents, biologics, and targeted therapies Complete sections on complications of radiation therapy, surgery, high-dose chemotherapy, and stem-call transplantion

  • ISBN : 370916821X
  • Pages : 462 pages

Download or read book Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors written by Yutaka Sawamura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intracranial germ cell tumors are a group of uncommon neoplasms of the central nervous system. The clinical features and natural history of these lesions are quite unique and variable. While intracranial germ cell tumors have been a fascination to neurooncologists for decades, the relatively small number of patients seen in any single institution has hampered the important clinical investigation that is so needed. This text is complete with detailed information concerning the epidemiology, pathology, oncological biology, clinical findings, radiology, and treatment options including surgical strategy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy for this heterogeneous group of neoplasms. The ongoing clinical trials concerning the optimization of therapy are efficiently summarized. An important final segment addresses the late sequelae of therapy which is of great significance since the majority suffering from these tumors are young patients. This first and only book on intracranial germ cell tumors includes excellent and comprehensive data sheets, illustrations, and radiograms. It provides a detailed and outstanding reference source for physicians taking care of patients with intracranial germ cell tumors, and will be a very welcome edition to their reference libraries.

Book The Geomagnetic Field and Life

Download or read book The Geomagnetic Field and Life written by A. Dubrov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased that my book The Geomagnetic Field and Life is being published in English in the United States. Thanks to the initiative of Plenum Press, a publishing hause that is widely known in all countries, I have a great new opportunity to make direct contact with friends throughout the world. My book on the geomagnetic field can be regarded as an abstraction, whose purpose is to provide a better picture and understanding of the world araund us, its main driving forces, and factors, to help us to know ourselves, and to proceed further. The essence of the abstraction is that in treating the problern I have deliberately ignored the diverse effects of various extemal factors on living organisms and have confined myself to an analysis of the effect of the GMF. This approach allows me to go one step further-to draw various conclusions and propose theories that rnight bring us closer to a proper understanding of the true nature of the phenomena. Philosophers have long been aware that by such abstract thinking we can deterrnine the nature of phenomena more reliably, completely, and comprehensively, penetrate to the very core of the observed effects, and perceive the depth of their interrelations.
