Book Computational Methods in Systems Biology

Download or read book Computational Methods in Systems Biology written by Pierpaolo Degano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th Conference on Computational Methods in Systems Biology (CMSB 2009), held in Bologna, from August 31 to September 1, 2009. The ?rst CMSB was held in Trento in 2003, bringing together life scientists, computer scientists, engineers and physicists. The goal was to promote the c- vergence of di?erent disciplines aiming at a new understanding and description of biological systems, ?rmly ground in formal models, supported by compu- tionallanguagesandtools, ando?eringnew methodsofanalysis. The conference then moved to Paris in 2004, Edinburgh in 2005, Trento in 2006, Edinburgh in 2007 and Rostock/Warnemunde ̈ in 2008. This year the conference attracted about 45 submissions form 18 countries, mainly from Europe and North America, but also from Asia and Australia. We wish to thank all authors for their interest in CMSB 2009. After careful disc- sions, the Programme Committee eventually selected 18 papers for presentation at the conference. Each of them was accurately refereed by at least three - viewers, who delivered detailed and insightful comments and suggestions. The Conference Chairmen warmly thank all the members of the Programme C- mittee and all their sub-referees for the excellent support they gave, as well as for the friendly and constructive discussions. We also would like to thank the authorsfor havingrevisedtheir papers to addressthe comments andsuggestions by the referees.

Book Mycorrhizas Functional Processes and Ecological Impact

Download or read book Mycorrhizas Functional Processes and Ecological Impact written by Concepción Azcón-Aguilar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycorrhizal symbioses are central to the multitrophic interactions that impact plant productivity, competitiveness and survival. This book integrates present-day knowledge from well-known research groups on some of the topics which are at the forefront of mycorrhizal research. Topics include the cell programmes that drive mycorrhiza formation and function, the processes sustaining symbiotic mutualism, stress response mechanisms in mycorrhizal symbionts, and the diversity and ecological impacts of mycorrhizal systems. The efficient management of mycorrhizal systems has the potential to support the sustainable production of quality foods while ensuring environmental quality for future generations.

Book Literature Search Strategies for Interdisciplinary Research

Download or read book Literature Search Strategies for Interdisciplinary Research written by Linda G. Ackerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of published literature can be overwhelming for scientists and researchers moving from a broad disciplinary research area to a more specialized one, particularly in fields that use information from more than one discipline. Without a focused inquiry, the researcher may find too little information or may be overcome by too much. Striking the correct balance of information is the focus of Literature Search Strategies for Interdisciplinary Research. This useful reference tool studies diverse interdisciplinary areas revealing the general and individual qualities that dictate the strategies of successful searches. Beginning with a bare-bones search strategy for finding primary research in interdisciplinary areas, the book then goes on to provide hints for research in specific disciplines, as the unique traits of the individual fields compound the difficulties in interdisciplinary research. Individual chapters, written by experts in that particular area, address ten research fields in depth, disclosing the common qualities of interdisciplinary research. The study areas covered include Paleontology, Crystallography, Quaternary Research, Human Factors Engineering, Nanotechnology, Atmospheric Chemistry, Bioethics, Computational Biology, Engineering Entrepreneurship, and Machine Learning. For scientists and engineers new to their fields, as well as librarians whose responsibilities include collecting library materials for newly-emerging interdisciplinary research areas, Linda Ackerson's guide provides all that is needed to develop a successful search strategy.

Book Evolutionary Computation Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics

Download or read book Evolutionary Computation Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics written by Mario Giacobini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics, EvoBIO 2012, held in Málaga, Spain, in April 2012 co-located with the Evo* 2012 events. The 15 revised full papers presented together with 8 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. Computational Biology is a wide and varied discipline, incorporating aspects of statistical analysis, data structure and algorithm design, machine learning, and mathematical modeling toward the processing and improved understanding of biological data. Experimentalists now routinely generate new information on such a massive scale that the techniques of computer science are needed to establish any meaningful result. As a consequence, biologists now face the challenges of algorithmic complexity and tractability, and combinatorial explosion when conducting even basic analyses.
