Book excerpt: Scientific discourse is increasingly internationalised, as a result of the great influence that the discourse conventions of the international English-speaking academic community exert on scientific communication worldwide. Contrastive rhetoric studies, however, have shown that the particular configuration of different discourse communities may have an influence on the construction of genres. This book explores rhetorical preferences in the research article abstract genre. The main focus of the study is an investigation of the extent to which there is cross-linguistic variation in terms of the rhetorical strategies used by writers in abstracts to foreground their main knowledge claims and present themselves as qualified discourse community members. From a quantitative and qualitative perspective, the author compares the rhetorical structure and other socio-pragmatic features of abstracts written in English for international scientific journals with those written in Spanish for Spanish journals in the experimental social sciences, and more specifically in the disciplines of phonetics and psychology. In the interpretation of results, the author mainly draws on socio-cultural and contextual factors to account for cross-cultural rhetorical variation.

The methodology and conventions employed in academic discourse, however, vary across cultures to a certain degree, and often represent obstacles for publishing in international journals for authors whose native language is not English, as top journals tend to centre on the Anglo-Saxon academic writing norms. This is one of the major reasons why national academic discourses need to be linguistically profiled and studied and contrastively compared against these norms. This volume contributes to this very objective by shedding light on academic discourse as effectuated in various, mostly Balkan countries, and contrasts it against the corresponding western, English discourse. Furthermore, academic discourse is studied through a variety of genres it can assume, such as research articles, conference proceedings, and university lectures. Through exploring the cultural differences in academic discourse and the standards of international academic writing, this volume offers readers a chance to become better equipped in publishing abroad. Opening with a chapter focusing on the general structure of research articles and national writing habits as a potential hindrance to publishing abroad, the book goes on to study the rhetorical structure of the abstracts, introductions and conclusions of research articles in linguistics, economics and civil engineering. The second part of the book deals with hedging, contrastively studied in international and national journals, with the following chapters studying cohesion as accomplished in academic writing. Part three deals with the syntactic and semantic features of academic discourse. Tato monografie se věnuje výhradně psanému odbornému diskursu. Soustavně vychází z analýzy autentických dat diskursu humanitních věd. Publikaci profilují především stylistické, textově-lingvistické a diskursní analýzy, které čerpají z celé škály relevantních teorií včetně aktuálního členění větného, čímž nepřímo ověřují jejich nosnost. Všechny kapitoly předkládají kvantitativní i kvalitativní analýzu dat, mezi těmito pohledy usilují o rovnováhu a pokoušejí se vždy o funkční interpretaci zjištění. Z epistemologického hlediska jsou všechny studie zahrnuté do této publikace pevně spjaty s funkčně strukturalistickou tradicí Pražské školy, která je přirozeně obohacena o moderní přístupy ze světové lingvistiky. This monograph deals with English academic discourse and focuses on some of its constitutive features. Although a variety of particular topics are addressed, the volume is largely centred on three standards of textuality, namely intertextuality, coherence, and informativity. In this book, all these standards meet in the Global Theme, which is grasped here uniquely as a cluster of relevant features – embodied by the titles, lists of keywords and their in-text use, and further developed through diverse academic subgenres, through paragraph themes and enhanced by integrating relevant citations. This monograph explores written academic discourse exclusively. It is firmly established on the systematic investigation of authentic data drawn from the discourse of the humanities. The book profiles stylistic, text linguistic and discourse analyses, employing a range of relevant theories, including the Functional Sentence Perspective, and thus indirectly verifying their viability. All the chapters provide quantitative as well as qualitative analyses of data, striving to achieve an appropriate balance and to interpret the findings functionally. From the epistemological viewpoint, all of the studies involved in the monograph are rooted in the Prague functionalist tradition, naturally enriched by modern approaches from world linguistics.
