Book excerpt: Can you change your destiny by embracing reconciliation and forgiveness, even after surviving a harsh life? That is the dilemma facing young Alex Ngure. Absolute Reconciliation explores the themes of male chauvinism in the African context, issues of guilt, family breakdowns, and difficulties of forgiveness. The ultimate theme of the book is the desire to be reconciled with self, others, and God. The story is set in 1985 to 1995 in Nairobi, Kenya, where Alex is born of an incestuous rape relationship. He faces the wrath of his stepfather, Macharia, who was not privy of his wife’s rape. Acting out of ignorance, Macharia accuses his wife, Rachel, of adultery. His stepfather treats Alex as a scapegoat, accusing him of all manner of vices as a way of hitting back at his “unfaithful” wife. Unable to cope with the physical, emotional, and mental abuse coming from Macharia, Alex runs away and ends up on the streets of Nairobi, where he is initiated into a gang. Even as Absolute Reconciliation shows the problems arising out of broken homes, crime, and guilt, it still ends on a hopeful note.

Book excerpt: Dag Petersson offers a comprehensive critique of the philosophy that has dominated 200 years of modern thought, politics, economy, and culture. The basic question is this: why does dialectical metaphysics fail to keep what it promises? What is it about dialectics, that makes it fall into irreducibly distinct variations of itself, when all it promises is to synthesize, to reconcile and make whole what is fragmented and alien to itself? An undisciplined creativity intrinsic to completing reason comes to light through analyses of how dialectical systems begin. Every dialectical philosophy must account for its own birth, and it is at this point, when it also articulates its promise of universal synthesis, that the book discovers a desire for light-writing, or photography. Only the most immediate element light can mediate the necessary self-determination of thought at its origin. Light must begin to write. A philosophical critique of dialectics is therefore also a point of departure for a new aesthetic ontology of photography.

Book Reconciliation in Divided Societies

Download or read book Reconciliation in Divided Societies written by Erin Daly and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As nations struggling to heal wounds of civil war and atrocity turn toward the model of reconciliation, Reconciliation in Divided Societies takes a systematic look at the political dimensions of this international phenomenon. . . . The book shows us how this transformation happens so that we can all gain a better understanding of how, and why, reconciliation really works. It is an almost indispensable tool for those who want to engage in reconciliation"—from the foreword by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu As societies emerge from oppression, war, or genocide, their most important task is to create a civil society strong and stable enough to support democratic governance. More and more conflict-torn countries throughout the world are promoting reconciliation as central to their new social order as they move toward peace and stability. Scores of truth and reconciliation commissions are helping bring people together and heal the wounds of deeply divided societies. Since the South African transition, countries as diverse as Timor Leste, Sierra Leone, Fiji, Morocco, and Peru have placed reconciliation at the center of their reconstruction and development programs. Other efforts to promote reconciliation—including trials and governmental programs—are also becoming more prominent in transitional times. But until now there has been no real effort to understand exactly what reconciliation could mean in these different situations. What does true reconciliation entail? How can it be achieved? How can its achievement be assessed? This book digs beneath the surface to answer these questions and explain what the concepts of truth, justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation really involve in societies that are recovering from internecine strife. Looking to the future as much as to the past, Erin Daly and Jeremy Sarkin maintain that reconciliation requires fundamental political and economic reform along with personal healing if it is to be effective in establishing lasting peace and stability. Reconciliation, they argue, is best thought of as a means for transformation. It is the engine that enables victims to become survivors and divided societies to transform themselves into communities where people work together to raise children and live productive, hopeful lives. Reconciliation in Divided Societies shows us how this transformation happens so that we can all gain a better understanding of how and why reconciliation is actually accomplished.

Book Hegel s Philosophy of Universal Reconciliation

Download or read book Hegel s Philosophy of Universal Reconciliation written by Stephen Theron and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the final one in a series of four on Hegel as theologian, first presented as such in New Hegelian Essays (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012). In From Narrative to Necessity (2012) we then set forth the essential theme of Hegel’s theology as the transcendence of “picture-thinking”. In a third volume, Reason’s Developing Self-Revelation (2013), we specified this same theme as humanity’s accomplished future (ultimate end of life, the Idea). Here, finally, we discover the reconciliation of Mind with itself as the nerve of Hegel’s thought. Hence, this book is subtitled “Logic as Form of the World”, picking up on Gottlob Frege’s rhetorical question, “What is the world without the reason?” The first chapter recapitulates that intimate union of God and man the Christian confessional movement would manifest, set forth here philosophically. This leads naturally to an identification of faith, the virtue, with the habit of rationality. Religious apologetic is found to fall short of philosophy, which forms a system (chapter 15). In “Logic and the World” (chapter18) we further specify such logical knowledge as issuing in rational will, called love in J. M. E. McTaggart’s Hegelian writings. Man himself, herself, is finally identified with Mind as both the uniquely determining “form” (the Idea) of our self-transcending nature, universalising the individual, individualising the universal, and, equally, form of “the world”. Here the thrust of Hegel’s metaphysics confirms those of Aristotle on this point. Last, after some historical and practical reflections (medieval thought, the clergy, Marxism), we end where we began, with the transforming effect of Hegel’s thought as developing the doctrine of a divine creation in particular, while also developing the doctrine of this development itself, in anticipatory development, therefore, of J. H. Newman’s classic essay of 1845 on The Development of Christian Doctrine.

Book Science Culture and the Reconciliation of Knowledge and Understanding

Download or read book Science Culture and the Reconciliation of Knowledge and Understanding written by Arthur Pontynen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In daily life we consciously attempt to reconcile what with why, factual knowledge with understanding. Currently, it is commonplace to presume that understanding is limited to the production of facts, which we place into narratives of understanding. We exist in a world of facts with no why to find, living in a culture that vacillates between identity and tolerance, authoritarianism and anarchism. Neglected is the importance of seeking good judgments in daily life, that is, of being wise. This book analyzes the millennial shift from seeking Truth to asserting subjective meanings, so that we can escape that sordid condition. It is necessary to challenge current dominant modes of thought and interpretation in order to live intelligently and peacefully. Western Civilization and the Enlightenment are historically associated with seeking to understand, with the goal of being right with an intelligible and therefore meaningful reality. That goal remains worthy of our efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hegel's philosophical interpretation of Trinity as a dialectically developing movement of Spirit is one of the most profound readings of Trinity in Western thought. In Hegel's Trinitarian Claim, Dale M. Schlitt provides a careful, detailed presentation of this claim in Hegel's major published works and in his lectures on the philosophy of religion, taking a critical look at how Hegel presents his claim that to think of God as subject and person one must think of God as Trinity. Although agreeing with Hegel's conclusion, Schlitt argues on the basis of an immanent critique of Hegel's thought that Hegel is not able to defend that claim in the way in which he proposes to do so. Schlitt argues instead that Hegel's trinitarian claim can be justified when Spirit is no longer seen as a movement of thought but as a movement of enriching experience. This close analysis provides an excellent point of entry into the wider study and critical consideration of Hegel's systematic philosophical project as a whole. Originally published in 1984 and available now in paperback for the first time, this edition features a new preface and postscript.
