Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by Janet Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: The Greatest American Often he spoke of his mother in these words: "All that I am, all that I hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." To his mother, when a boy, he made the promise that held him throughout his life a strictly temperance man. "A promise is a promise forever," he said. "When made to a mother, it is doubly binding." Born and reared in poverty - realistic poverty - counting his school days in the brief period of six months-Abraham Lincoln came up from obscurity to the most honored place in the gift of a great nation; not by the lever of wealth, or lucky political chance, but the steady lift of his own, innate, resistless, mental and moral strength - American Democracy, pure and undefiled. And always a never doubting, never wavering faith in a God of Justice and Mercy, - a faith frequently and frankly expressed in the simplicity of his inspired wisdom and prophecy. The plain people were his university. The Bible and John Bunyan, were his first text books. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Abraham Lincoln Man and Statesman Classic Reprint

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Man and Statesman Classic Reprint written by William Pickens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Man and Statesman We are here today in praise of "arms and a man." And in praising the wisdom of the man or recounting the success of the arms it is no part of our purpose to deride those who disagreed with that man nor to taunt those who were vanquished by those arms. We are here in memory of the humblest citizen of a nation, and in honor of the greatest statesman of his time. Abraham Lincoln's life ran the whole gamut of American society. He was born into the "poor white trash" of the Southern backwoods; he was pioneer and frontiersman; he was rail-splitter and flat-boatman; he was champion wrestler, cock-pit umpire and saloon-keeper; he was merchant, surveyor and country lawyer; he was the leading lawyer and politician, the acknowledged head and the champion orator of a political party in his state; he was legislator, congressman, statesman and President; he was leader in the most remarkable war of modern times - he was the tallest figure of the nineteenth century - he was the liberator of a race and martyr to the life of his country. Abraham Lincoln was the first president of the United States who was characteristically American. One hundred years ago in what was then Hardin County, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln was born. In the aristocratic sense of the phrase, he was a man of "no ancestry." His father was probably descended from people who came first from England to Massachusetts, thence to Virginia, thence to Kentucky. Abraham Lincoln's grandfather and namesake was a brother-in-law of Daniel Boone and was one of the pioneers of the middle West. This grandfather had been shot by the Indians when Lincoln's father, Thomas Lincoln, was about six years of age. Mordecai, brother of Lincoln's father, is reputed to have been industrious, but Thomas, the father of Abraham Lincoln, was what we might call, without exaggeration, lazy and trifling. When we consider this man's ancestry and early surroundings, we are both enlightened and confused: we are enlightened in that we can see in his humble origin the source of his sympathy for his humblest fellow-man, in his frontier life we can see the cause of his manly independence, and in his early associations we can see the foundation of his firm faith in the "plain people." - but we are confused in that we cannot rind in his immediate parentage and environment the necessary stimulus and inspiration, and from his early lack of opportunity we cannot account for the development of mental power, tact and executive ability. In these latter respects the law of cause and effect is apparently broken. His mother had been one Nancy Hanks, a woman of very humble origin and of a melancholy disposition. His father Thomas was a thriftless, ignorant fellow who loved to tell stories. He seemed to lack the instinct or ambition to settle down and build a decent home, even after he as married. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Impressions of Abraham Lincoln Someone has said, That nation is death-stricken that ceases to reverence the memory of her great men. And so we in America are raising memorials to our Washingtons, our Lincolns, our Grants, our Roosevelts, and are commemorating their birth days. The British are doing the same for their great heroes. There is a good deal in common between our British cousins and ourselves. John Wesley was a Britisher but there are millions in our land to-day who also claim him as theirs. No man could possibly be more of an American than was Abraham Lincoln, but to-day he belongs to the world. Book The Words of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Words of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Abraham Lincoln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Words of Abraham Lincoln No man has ever lived in America whose life has been more closely identified with the common people, and who yet has been more grandly influential in shaping the affairs of the nation. In the most critical period of her existence he saved her from calamity and ruin. His hand removed the foul stain of slavery, and made the Stars and Stripes in very truth the flag of the free. It seems a marvel, even here in America, that a poor, ignorant boy could aspire to the highest honor within the gift of the people; but more marvelous still, that a country lawyer could grapple with the tremendous problems which had baffled the Wisdom and skill of America's greatest states men for almost half a century, and solve them successfully. Wholly unskilled in war, he conducted the greatest war of modern times and brought it to a successful issue. With unerring judgment he found the correct solution of the most involved problems of law, finance, and diplomacy. It is inconceivable that a man's life could suddenly expand from the narrow round Of private life to comprehend all the varied and tremendous responsibilities of this high position without previous preparation. Daniel Webster, on the night before his Reply to Hayne, when asked why he was not making preparation for this the greatest event of his life, replied, that for twenty years he had been preparing for it. Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A Study Abraham lincoln was born on the 12th February, 1809, in the State of Kentucky. Those who place faith in pedigree, in being the descendants of a good stock, will be disappointed to learn, that the only trunk which can be traced for the American President's family tree, is his grandfather, after whom he was named, who was a very poor backwoodsman in Kentucky, and who was murdered and scalped by the native Indians there, not far from the miserable log cabin which he occupied, sometime about the year 1780. Thomas Lincoln, the father of the subject of this essay, was this unfortunate man's younger son, and was a mere infant when his father was murdered. He grew up without any education whatever, being employed about a farm from a very early age. In 1806, he married Nancy Hanks, who was mother of Abraham Lincoln. Thomas Lincoln and his wife belonged to the despised class, styled in Kentucky, the poor whites, but Mrs. Lincoln was a superior woman of her class. She could not write, but she had the advantage of her husband, in being able to read: we find that they attended a Baptist Chapel; that Mrs. Lincoln was noted for piety, and was much respected by her neighbours. She was very desirous that her children should have some education, and when only seven years of age, Abraham was sent to a country school, in the neighbour hood. His school-days here, however, came to a very early close, his father, with all his household, having emigrated to the free State of Indiana, in the Autumn of 1816, a very few months after he had been sent to. School. Thomas Lincoln found his position, as a poor white. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait Life of Lincoln: Life of Abraham Lincoln, the Greatest American There is not one who reads these lines who was born in humbler circumstances than Abraham Lincoln; not one whose opportunities in life are so limited as those which surrounded him; and yet he became one of the greatest of men. His life proves to all generations the power of an indomitable will and a resolute purpose; that man, when he conquers him self, can conquer the world. Do you remember that old homestead where you were born? It was a mansion compared with that rough log cabin in the Kentucky wilderness where Abraham Lincoln began life on that cold winter day on the twelfth of February, in 1809. Do you remember the dear old village where you spent your child hood days; its long country roads, shaded with towering maples and elms, along which you romped and shouted and played on your way to school those good old days in the country? It was a, great world of light and laughter, of pleasure and friendship, of wonderful Opportunities, compared with that forest home of Abraham Lincoln where only the growl of the bear echoed along the trail, where the ring Of the ax was the only sound of civilization, and desolation and poverty were his only friends - and they were staunch friends. Every American is rich today in comparison with the worldly posses sions of Abraham Lincoln during his childhood, his youth, and his early manhood - rich in surroundings of home; rich in the comforts of life; rich in the opportunities for learning and education. There is not an American youth who is not a millionaire In the possibilities of vast success in life, compared to the possibilities that were within the grasp of Abraham Lincoln on the day that he left his father's roof to go out into the great world, of which he knew only the knowledge that comes from the school of the woods and the motherhood of Nature. There was one thing that he did not know and never learned - and that was Fear. He learned early that man is his own master; that with a strong arm, a strong heart, and a strong will, there is no power on earth that he need fear; that with his conscience clear and his mind clean the future will take care of itself and even Death is conquered. Book Abraham Lincoln as a Man Among Men Classic Reprint

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln as a Man Among Men Classic Reprint written by Guy Lynn Sumner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln as a Man Among Men If I should carve a Lincoln, I would take No snow-white marble, but a rugged rock, One that the frosts of Winter could not break, That had withstood the ocean's thundering shock, Some solid rock amid the shifting sands, Unmoved by storm, unaltered by the wave, Some granite giant that forever stands To mark the harbor with a light to save. If I should carve a Lincoln, I would shape Some promontory lifting from the sea, Standing, as Lincoln stood, a mighty cape Thrust forward into time a century, Looking, as Lincoln looked, beyond the shore, Across the ocean of the future years, A rock to stand for men forevermore And point the way to other pioneers. If I should carve a Lincoln, I would form A figure from a rock that loved the sun, A rock that glistened after every storm And smiled with verdure when the rain was done, A rock where little children came to play And violets to blossom on the slope, That found, like Lincoln, humor in each day, In words of humor finding words of hope. If you would carve a Lincoln, such a stone You will require, 0 sculptor, for your art, Some stone gigantic standing thus alone, High as his mind, and broad as Lincoln's heart. We may not hope to shape with human hands A fit memorial for such as he Leave Time to carve it from some rock that stands, Some new Gibraltar, by our western sea.
