In the course of my law-reading, said Mr. Lincoln to a friend,1' I con stantly came upon the word demonstrate, and I asked my self, what do I do when I demonstrate more than when I reason or prove what is the certainty called demonstration Having consulted dictionaries and books Of reference to little purpose, I said to myself, Lincoln, you can never make a lawyer if you do not understand what demonstrate means.' I had never had but six months' schooling in my life; but now I left my placp in Springfield, and went home to my father's and stayed there till I could give any proposition of the six books of Euclid gt sight. Book Citizen Lincoln

Download or read book Citizen Lincoln written by Ward McAfee and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern times, some critics have belittled Abraham Lincoln's antislavery resolve as shallow. Some have portrayed him as a passive president, waiting upon the bold initiatives of others. 'Citizen Lincoln' regards him differently. First, it portrays Lincoln's animus against slavery as rooted in the highest ideals of the American Revolution, which he saw as being corrupted in his own time. Second, it analyses Lincoln's supposed 'passivity' as more aptly defined as wise caution. Lincoln learned as a legislator, first in Illinois and later in the United States Congress, that bold initiatives often backfire and fail to fulfil original intentions. In the state legislature, Lincoln supported a dramatic internal-improvements project that collapsed in the midst of a national depression. Lincoln also boldly opposed the Mexican War in Congress, only to see his cause evaporate as soon as a peace treaty was drafted with Mexico. In both instances, his timing was faulty. He had rushed into taking rigid policy positions when greater caution would have reaped better results. But in both instances, he learned lessons that would hold him in good stead later. Lincoln as president was wisely cautious, knowing that bold action could only disrupt the delicate coalition that kept the Union cause moving forward to victory. Harriet Beecher Stowe described Lincoln's unique strength as "swaying to every influence, yielding on this side and on that to popular needs, yet tenaciously and inflexibly bound to carry its great end". She wisely added that no other kind of strength could have seen the nation through the worst trial in its history. In filling this role, Abraham Lincoln fulfilled that which he had long regarded as his personal mission within the larger context of his nation's providential destiny.

This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln, With Some Lessons From His Death: A Discourse Delivered in the M. E. Church at an Union Meeting of the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian Congregations of Panama April 30, 1865 Let us now turn for a few moments to survey the character of the late President. And we premise that we do not intend an ex haustive discussion. We shall simply glance at some of the chief and most prominent traits. And we will name that first which would doubtless be first in the mind and on the lips of every man whether friend or foe - his um'mpenchable honesty. Abraham Lin coln was an honest man. His course had been so marked by this before his presidency, that he was best known by the title, Hon es! Abe oft/w csl. And what was true of him in the humble spheres, as he advanced through them step by step, was still more. Conspicuously manifested in the fiery ordeal of four years' continu ance through which he has but just passed. Where this quality of character has been scamest, he has caused it to shine the brightest. It had come to be regarded as nearly if not quite impossible for a man to keep this jewel of the soul at the seat of our government, and especially when entrusted with the management ot'large public afl'airs. It had been so apt to dissolve in the furnace-heatsot' tempta tion, that most of those who had gone. There with the reputed possession of this treasure. On coming away were found quite insol vent, their treasure all dissipated and gone. President Lincoln has in this particular. Redeemed the presidrntial ofiicc and the honor of politioal lit'e generally. He has shown it. Possible. To min gle. With the seltisb. The ambitions, the tricky, and yet. To live above suspicion. He has shown it possible to acquire and to keep the character of an honest. Man. His enemies themselves being judges. Now we regard this as no unimportant acquisition to the moral wealth of our countrv. For now once. More we behold the highest (illicc under our gm'ernmcnt. Decked with tbat fragrant, imperisha blc laurcl-honcstv. Human nature and the American name have been at once honored in the view of all lands. And another shining example of this cardinal virtue has been added to that given by nlll' first president for the benefit of the youth of this and succeed inp; gent-rations.
