Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2: By Distinguished Men of His Time Upon the ground, whittling sticks, and heard me, throughout, with marked attention. Hurrying on to my appointments, I saw him then no more. I never shall forget his long, ungainly person, and plain, but even then sad and thoughtful features. He was but little known to the world, but his being the husband of my old friend of earlier days caused me to look with interest upon him. I flatter myself that I sowed good seed in good ground, which, in the providence of God, produced in time good fruit. Joshua and James Speed, now famous for their associations with Lincoln, Kentuckians and natives of Jefferson County, Kentucky, were my schoolmates, and relatives of John Speed Smith, who married my eldest sister Eliza. A few years ago Joshua was in vited to deliver a lecture at Berea College, inomy county, upon Lincoln. This college, of which I and John G. Fee were the founders, is about fourteen miles from Richmond by the old buggy road. I heard Speed's lecture with great interest, and taking him in my carriage, drove him to my sister Smith's residence, about twelve miles north-east from Berea. On the route we naturally talked much of Lincoln, of which conversation I will give some account. Joshua Speed, the son of a wealthy farmer, quit Kentucky and set up a miscellaneous store in the capital of Illinois, then a'mere backwoods village. One day an awkward green stranger of great stature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by John T. Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 of 2 His ancestors, who were Quakers, went to Virginia from Berks County, Pennsylvania. An effort to identify them with the New England family of the same name ended in nothing more definite than a similarity of Christian names in both families, such as Enoch, Levi, Mordecai, Solomon, Abra ham, and the like. This effort to connect the president with the Lincolns of Massachusetts was afterward carried forward by others, who felt an interest greater than his own in establishing the fact. Yet if he had expected the quest to result satisfactorily, he would probably have been less indifferent about it; for it is obvious that, in common with all Ameri cans of the old native stock, he had a strenuous desire to come of respectable people; and his very reluctance to have his apparently low extrac tion investigated is evidence that he would have been glad to learn that he belonged to an ancient and historical family of the old Puritan Common wealth, Settlers not far from Plymouth Rock, and immigrants not long after the arrival of the May flower. This descent has at last been traced by the patient genealogist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and His Presidency, Vol. 1 of 2 Before the meeting of the Republican N ational Con vention of 1860 I had undertaken, not of my own motion or at first willingly, to write a campaign biography of its nominee for the Presidency. I was confident that my subject would not be Mr. Seward, but had no presenti ment that the choice of the convention would be Abra ham Lincoln, whom I had then never met. In my first interview with him, soon after the adjournment of the convention (oi which I was a member), he earnestly and even sadly insisted that there was no adequate material for such a work as was intended, yet he received me very kindly, and showed no unusual reserve in talking of either his earlier or maturer life. As to both periods, he readily gave such facts as my inquiries invited or suggested; introduced me to friends with whom he had been on intimate terms for more than twenty years; and put me in the way of exploring newspaper files and legislative journals in the Illinois State library for biographic material. Book Abraham Lincoln the True Story of a Great Life Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Henry Herndon and Jesse Weik's "Abraham Lincoln the True Story of a Great Life," published in 1892, is a voluminous biography of one of the greatest statesmen in American history. This could be regarded as an authoritative resource due to the main fact that Mr. Herndon himself was a good friend and law partner of the former President of the United States. The co-author knew him even before he married or was elected to Congress. He also had the privilege of being invited by former President Lincoln to join him in a new legal partnership and of being described as by the latter as "my man always above all other men on the globe." Despite Mr. Herndon's close association with the American leader who abolished slavery, he still did his share of research, gathering accounts relating to President Lincoln's life in order to present an accurate picture of him as a real man rather than a saint, which is what the official biographers did. Mr. Weik assisted in rewriting and doing supplementary research work in order to update the work that his co-biographer has already accomplished. He also provided financial support and rewrote most of the initial draft. What we have now is a very detailed portrait of the assassinated President, covering two volumes. This edition is the first part, covering the subject's birth up to his first appearance at the Illinois Supreme Court. Despite Mr. Herndon's close association to President Lincoln, there are some portions in this book that would require more prudence, as they have been refuted by the subject's own son. Nevertheless, admirers of the former leader, as well as historians, can glean interesting insights from this volume. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 of 2 written by Emanuel Hertz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 of 2: A New Portrait While Lincoln lived, the United States of today was a nation very much in the making. It was in the making not only politically and economically but intellectually and morally as well. It was a people trying to find itself under conditions of greatest novelty and unexampled diversity. Political and social institutions, which had been fairly well tested for a reasonable length of time within closely defined and relatively homogeneous areas, were now to be set to work under conditions of greatest diversity both social and economic. A federal union was to be built and preserved under conditions which often seemed to make either the building or the preservation beyond the practical powers of man. Nevertheless, the Westward movement of the pioneer families and groups, the Ordinance of 1784 and that of 1787 for the government of the Northwest Territory, the Louisiana Purchase, the acquisition of Florida, the Ashburton Treaty, the Oregon treaty of 1846, and the results of the Mexican War all followed relentlessly one after the other, and moved steadily toward the accomplishment and perpetuity of one great aim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writings of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1: 1832-1843 This speech has not attracted much general atten tion, yet it is in a peculiar degree both illustrative and typical of the great statesman who made it, alike in its strong common-sense and in its lofty standard of morality. Lincoln's life, Lincoln's deeds and words, are not only of consuming interest to the his torian, but should be intimately known to every man engaged in the hard practical work of American po litical life. It is difficult to overstate how much it means to a nation to have as the two foremost figures in its history men like Washington and Lincoln. It is good for every man in any way concerned in public life to feel that the highest ambition any American can possibly have will be gratified just in proportion as he raises himself toward the standards set by these two men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2 of 2: The True Story of a Great Life As he entered the trial, relates one of his col leagues at the bar, * where most lawyers would ob ject he would say he reckoned it would be fair to let this in, or that; and sometimes, when his adver sary could not quite prove what Lincoln knew to be the'truth, he 'reckoned it would be fair to admit the truth to be so-and-so. When he did object to the court, and when he heard his objections an swered, he would often say, Well, I reckon I must be wrong.' Now, about the time he had practised this three-fourths through the case, if his adversary didn't understand him, he would wake up in a few minutes learning that he had feared the Greeks too late, and find himself beaten. He was wise as a serpent in the trial of a cause, but I have had too many scares from his blows to certify that he was harmless as a dove. When the whole thing was unravelled, the adversary would begin to see that what he was so blandly giving away was simply what he couldn't get and keep. By giving away six points and carrying the seventh he carried his case, and the whole case hanging on the seventh, he traded away everything which would give him the least aid in carrying that. Any man who took Lincoln for a simple-minded man would very soon wake up with his back in a ditch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
