Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in America, and the Ideal American Republic Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, was elected president of the United States. Many of the prominent politicians of the South professed to see in his election an act of hostility to slavery and an encroachment upon the rights of the Southern people, and they finally in duced a large number of the States to try to secede from the Union and form a confederate government. The fundamental principle of the secession movement was the doctrine of State rights: that every State of the Union had the right to secede whenever the people thought it best for their own interest. And so we in America are raising memorials to our Washingtons, our Lincolns, our Grants, our Roosevelts, and are commemorating their birth days. The British are doing the same for their great heroes. There is a good deal in common between our British cousins and ourselves. John Wesley was a Britisher but there are millions in our land to-day who also claim him as theirs. No man could possibly be more of an American than was Abraham Lincoln, but today he belongs to the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait Life of Lincoln: Life of Abraham Lincoln, the Greatest American There is not one who reads these lines who was born in humbler circumstances than Abraham Lincoln; not one whose opportunities in life are so limited as those which surrounded him; and yet he became one of the greatest of men. His life proves to all generations the power of an indomitable will and a resolute purpose; that man, when he conquers him self, can conquer the world. Do you remember that old homestead where you were born? It was a mansion compared with that rough log cabin in the Kentucky wilderness where Abraham Lincoln began life on that cold winter day on the twelfth of February, in 1809. Do you remember the dear old village where you spent your child hood days; its long country roads, shaded with towering maples and elms, along which you romped and shouted and played on your way to school those good old days in the country? It was a, great world of light and laughter, of pleasure and friendship, of wonderful Opportunities, compared with that forest home of Abraham Lincoln where only the growl of the bear echoed along the trail, where the ring Of the ax was the only sound of civilization, and desolation and poverty were his only friends - and they were staunch friends. Every American is rich today in comparison with the worldly posses sions of Abraham Lincoln during his childhood, his youth, and his early manhood - rich in surroundings of home; rich in the comforts of life; rich in the opportunities for learning and education. There is not an American youth who is not a millionaire In the possibilities of vast success in life, compared to the possibilities that were within the grasp of Abraham Lincoln on the day that he left his father's roof to go out into the great world, of which he knew only the knowledge that comes from the school of the woods and the motherhood of Nature. There was one thing that he did not know and never learned - and that was Fear. He learned early that man is his own master; that with a strong arm, a strong heart, and a strong will, there is no power on earth that he need fear; that with his conscience clear and his mind clean the future will take care of itself and even Death is conquered. Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by George Haven Putnam and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: The People's Leader in the Struggle for National Existence The twelfth of February, 1909, was the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. In New York, as in other cities and towns throughout the Union, the day was devoted to commemoration exercises, and even in the South, in centres like Atlanta (the capture of which in 1864 had indicated the collapse of the cause of the Confederacy), representative Southerners gave their testimony to the life and character of the great American. The Committee in charge of the commemoration in New York arranged for a series of addresses to be given to the people of the city and it was my privilege to be selected as one of the speakers. It was an indication of the rapid passing away of the generation which had had to do with the events of the War, that the list of orators, forty- six in all, included only four men who had ever seen the hero whose life and character they were describing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: The Ideal Christian It has been said of Abraham Lincoln, the humble backwoodsman who rose to be'the world's greatest governor and emancipator, that he was the m0st perfect Christian ideal outside of Bible characters. Too often ourgreat leaders limit themselves I') a certain nation or race, but this cannot be said of the two characters from whom we will try and draw some delightful and interesting comparisons. Jesus was a Jew, but more than a Jew; Lincoln was an American, but more than an American. They were what the Bible calls true Israelites and that includes all people who worship Abraham's God, regardless of nationality or color. Book Memories of Lincoln and the Splintering of American Political Thought

Download or read book Memories of Lincoln and the Splintering of American Political Thought written by Shawn J. Parry-Giles and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, Republicans and Democrats who advocated conflicting visions of American citizenship could agree on one thing: the rhetorical power of Abraham Lincoln’s life. This volume examines the debates over his legacy and their impact on America’s future. In the thirty-five years following Lincoln’s assassination, acquaintances of Lincoln published their memories of him in newspapers, biographies, and edited collections in order to gain fame, promote partisan aims, champion his hardscrabble past and exalted rise, and define his legacy. Shawn Parry-Giles and David Kaufer explore how style, class, and character affected these reminiscences. They also analyze the ways people used these writings to reinforce their beliefs about citizenship and presidential leadership in the United States, with specific attention to the fissure between republicanism and democracy that still exists today. Their study employs rhetorical and corpus research methods to assess more than five hundred reminiscences. A novel look at how memories of Lincoln became an important form of political rhetoric, this book sheds light on how divergent schools of U.S. political thought came to recruit Lincoln as their standard-bearer.

This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome's Responsibility for the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln Every Patriotic lecturer should be prepared to fur nish it to auv with whom he may come in contact who may desire, or can be prevailed upon to read it. Its price puts it within the reach of all; and it should be circulated by the millions throughout the length and breadth of the land. The suggestions which I have indulged in at its close are intended to be tentative rather than arbitrary. They, of course, express my own conclusions in re gard to what will be found necessary to break, for good and all, the power of the Hierarchy. Yet, I do not de sire to be dictatorial. I simply invite for them a careful, unbiased, consideration. It will be for the American people in the exercise of their collective wisdom to determine upon the best course of action. Something must be done; and they will have to deter mine as to the best method of doing that something. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
