Book Status Report for the National Wetlands Inventory Program

Download or read book Status Report for the National Wetlands Inventory Program written by U.s. Fish and Wildlife and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Wetlands Inventory Program (NWI) has been producing wetland maps and geospatial wetland data for the United States since the mid-1970s. The focus on the program has been on two fronts: 1) map or digital database preparation and delivery to the public, and 2) projecting and reporting on national wetland trends using a probability-based sampling design. The status of mapping has been made available through various media throughout the program's 30-year history (e.g., state atlases, regional status maps, and now through the internet via the Wetlands Mapper online tool). Annual progress reports have been produced for internal uses, but the NWI has never produced a national status report for public distribution. Given the evolution of the NWI, the diversity of products and activities with which the program is involved, and the wide public use of our products, the NWI decided to prepare this first status report. Being the first such report, it provides an introduction to the NWI Program in addition to reporting on the annual progress and activities across the regions. Future annual reports will focus on yearly accomplishments.

Book Classification and Inventory of the World s Wetlands

Download or read book Classification and Inventory of the World s Wetlands written by C.M. Finlayson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together, for the first time, information on various wetland classification systems and wetland inventories from around the world, outlining regional, national and local wetland classifications developed in Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Europe, India, South America and the USA. Oriented towards the conservation and management of wetlands, these existing national and regional classification systems have been useful in providing an essential base for the development of an international system. The volume also reviews various attempts at drawing up an inventory of wetlands in different parts of the world, ranging from field and literature surveys to highly sophisticated efforts using aerial photography and satellite imaging. Audience: Workers in wetland ecology, especially those working on classification, inventory, conservation, or management of wetlands at the local, national, regional or international levels.

Download or read book Wetlands of the Northeast written by U. S. Fish U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) in the mid-1970s to map the nation's wetlands and deepwater habitats. Since then, the NWI has completed at least one phase of mapping for all northeastern states, except New York where roughly three-quarters of the state has been inventoried. For most areas, NWI maps have been converted to digital geospatial data which facilitates generation of acreage summaries of the NWI findings. State reports have been published for several states (Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland) and acreage summaries published for most other northeastern states. Since these reports were published, NWI data have been updated for many areas. This report summarizes current NWI data (as of September 2090) for each state from Maine through Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Book Correlating Enhanced National Wetlands Inventory Data with Wetland Functions for Watershed Assessments

Download or read book Correlating Enhanced National Wetlands Inventory Data with Wetland Functions for Watershed Assessments written by U. S. Fish U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-14 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been conducting the National Wetlands Inventory for over 25 years. The NWI Program has produced wetland maps for 91% (78% final) of the lower 48 states, all of Hawaii, and 35% of Alaska. Wetlands are classified according to the Service's official wetland classification system (Cowardin et al. 1979). This classification describes wetlands by ecological system (Marine, Estuarine, Lacustrine, Riverine, and Palustrine), by subsystem (e.g., water depth, exposure to tides), class (vegetative life form or substrate type), subclass, water regimes (hydrology), water chemistry (pH and salinity), and special modifiers (e.g., alterations by humans). The maps have been converted to digital data for 47% of the lower 48 states and 18% of Alaska. The availability of digital data and geographic information system (GIS) technology make it possible to use NWI data for various geospatial analyses.
