Download or read book Fine Bonsai written by and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this luxurious cloth bound hardcover with glossy slipcase, renowned botanical photographer Jonathan Singer presents his breathtaking images of the world's most notable bonsai. In Fine Bonsai: Art & Nature, the finest extant achievements in the art of bonsai are seen together for the first time, through the lens of renowned botanical photographer Jonathan Singer. This magnificent volume is the result of an extensive photographic campaign, in the course of which Singer was granted unprecedented access to the most respected public and private collections in Japan and the United States, including the mecca of bonsai, the Omiya Bonsai Village of Saitama, Japan, where photography is normally prohibited. Three hundred stunning full-page images and four lavish gatefolds present bonsai of all types, from quiet representations of nature to bold sculptural forms. The horticultural and aesthetic characteristics of each bonsai are concisely and authoritatively described in the narrative captions by William Valavanis, head of the International Bonsai Arboretum in Rochester, New York. And because the container is considered an integral part of any bonsai—indeed, the literal meaning of “bonsai” is “tray plant”—the book also includes some twenty-five photographs of traditional bonsai containers, with descriptions. A further sequence of twenty-five photographs is devoted to the related art of suiseki, or miniature stone landscapes displayed in the same manner, and often alongside, bonsai. With his groundbreaking first book, Botanica Magnifica, Jonathan Singer established a new style of botanical photography, characterized by an exceptional clarity of detail and richness of color, as well as a painterly chiaroscuro. These qualities are just as evident in the present volume; Singer photographs each bonsai with an artist’s—one might even say a portraitist’s—eye. Whereas most books on bonsai aim to instruct readers on techniques of care and cultivation, Singer’s book takes the reader on a visual journey. His images encompass many different species, from azalea to red maple, as well as a variety of blossoms and fruits. Alluring and serene, Singer's photographs make the experience of leafing through Bonsai not unlike entering a real Japanese garden. Fine Bonsai: Art & Nature not only documents the masterpieces of an ancient horticultural art, but is a masterpiece in itself. A portion of the proceeds of this book will benefit the Japanese Red Cross.

Book excerpt: Understanding Bonsai is about as complete a book as you can get about the art of bonsai. It covers every thinkable aspect of bonsai from the definition through the history, styling, growing, exhibiting and evaluating in remarkable detail. The subject is treated in such a way that the very lay person can get all the elementary information needed to start understanding the art, but the more advanced growers can also benefit by the detailed, researched sections on applicable art as well as sound information on botanical issues. Throughout the book the author stresses the fact that growing bonsai is a form of artistic expression, but cannot be practiced without a thorough knowledge of ways to keep these living art objects healthy and growing well. The information is supplied. The chapters are set up to group different fields of interest in a user friendly manner. The contents page already gives a wide coverage of the scope of the book on a single page. The index at the end of the book is extremely detailed. A list of Japanese bonsai terms and translations into English is included, because the reader will come across these terms in this and other publications. A short glossary of more common botanical terms and compact descriptions thereof will help the lay person to understand some botany. The chapter on all the different styles is located in the heart of the book and along with the next chapter on characterizing trees will lead the bonsai grower into designing each and every imaginable shape of tree. An index of common tree names and their Latin counterparts has been included after the new chapter on different species of trees. More than two hundred species and variants of trees are described in the last chapter. This information covers their growth requirements and details with regard to their keeping as bonsai. Species from all over the world and its varying climates are included. This section can hardly ever be completed due to knowledge about trees and their suitability as bonsai constantly evolving. Notwithstanding, the chapter on species contains a wealth of data. The book is richly illustrated with more than 300 drawings by the author. In many instances the drawings are of actual bonsai existing somewhere in some collection. This has been done to emphasize that bonsai can be achieved. They exist. This book is about the reality and is not a theory. The photographs are of trees created by the author and a few friends. They show what can be managed in only a few years.

Download or read book Bonsai Trees written by Werner Jones and published by . This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: """Bonsai art is the display of a landscape - without the landscape.""--NobuKajiwaraThis quote couldn't be truer. Growing and sculpting bonsai trees can be quite a satisfying hobby. It is a hobby however, that requires a tremendous amount of patience. When you take a simple sapling and mould it to your desire, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful piece of art you can truly be proud of!The term bonsai literally means plant in a pot or tray planting. Bonsai however is much more than simply a plant in a pot. The goal of bonsai is to create the appearance of great size and age. This is accomplished by creating a bonsai with strong roots that extend in all directions, creating a sense of stability, a large trunk which tapers as it goes upward, a clear apex, and well formed and well placed branches. These features all combine to create a careful blend of symmetry, balance and proportion. It also must be displayed in a pot, which harmonizes well with the plant material.Bonsai is the art of growing trees in a confined space to simulate certain environmental conditions such as great age, extreme weathering, twisted or contorted form, landscape, or other factors. Bonsai trees are modeled on and take inspiration from nature. The idea of bonsai is to recreate some of nature's most stunning and beautiful effects on trees which are reduced in scale. When undertaking bonsai, you are beginning an experience that will expand your horizons in countless ways. You may find a new sense of appreciation for nature; you may start looking at trees, bushes and shrubs differently. You will certainly find yourself looking around all the ""worst parts"" of your local nurseries where they keep the plants that most people wouldn't look twice at. How the art of bonsai will change you is as unpredictable as nature itself, but be assured of one thing: Bonsai will change the way that you look at things. To the Japanese, there is a link to many of the ideals that their society is based on. Zen Buddhism - where the pastime originated, man, nature, elements and change all are intertwined into this unique method of meditation and expression. To our world now, bonsai is viewed as a hobby that allows a greater understanding and being with nature and also a way to enhance our gardens. The tree and the pot involved with bonsai form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and colour of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming. So read on and enjoy your e-book ""Bonsai Trees!""
