Book Abortion and the Private Practice of Medicine

Download or read book Abortion and the Private Practice of Medicine written by Jonathan B. Imber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, Abortion and the Private Practice of Medicine was the first book to look at abortion from the perspective of physicians in private practice. Jonathan B. Imber spent two years observing and interviewing all twenty-six of the obstetrician-gynecologists in “Daleton,” a city that did not have an abortion clinic. The decision as to whether, when, and how to perform abortions was therefore essentially up to the individual doctor. Imber begins the volume with a historical survey of medical views on abortion and the medical profession’s response to the legalization of abortion in the United States. Quoting extensively from his interviews, he looks at various characteristics of doctors that may affect their professional opinion on abortion: their age, gender, religious background, and length of residence in the community; the nature of their training and prior experience; and the setting of the practice (whether group or solo). Imber found that the physicians’ reasons for agreeing or refusing to perform abortions revealed considerable differences of opinion about how they construe their responsibilities.

How such "orphans of living" fare in today's world is the first concern of several of these studies and is further explored in a supplementary survey of 120 children who were born after their mothers refused therapeutic abortions. Comparing the lives of these children through age 21 with those of an appropriate control group, the survey is one of four studies that have been added to the presentation, which brings together papers delivered at the California Conference on Abortion (San Francisco, May 9-11, 1969)... Among the papers in his book is one dealing with legislative and judicial development in the field since the Conference; another on the matter of payment for medical care in abortion cases"--

Book Our Heartbreaking Choices

Download or read book Our Heartbreaking Choices written by Christie Brooks and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about abortion, but more specifically, about abortions sought due to a poor prenatal diagnosis or due to serious maternal health complications. This book contains 46 personal stories, each one from a woman who decided to interrupt a much-wanted and oftentimes much-planned pregnancy. There is very little societal support for parents who make this decision, which leaves most parents to deal with their sadness and grief alone. The purpose of the book is to share our stories in the hopes of helping other parents who have undergone a similar loss to feel less alone, less isolated, and less stigmatized. We hope to give a voice to all who have suffered a similar loss and to show that there are situations in which abortion is the most moral option. Although the focus of the book is to provide support to those who will make or have made a similar decision, we don't cast judgment on those who choose abortion for other reasons or those who choose to carry a pregnancy to term despite a poor prenatal diagnosis. We support all parents in choosing the path that is best for them. We support ALL choices.

Book Abortion Regimes

  • Publisher : Dartmouth Publishing Group
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Abortion Regimes written by Kerry Anne Petersen and published by Dartmouth Publishing Group. This book was released on 1993 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The regulations of abortion through legal controls have always been a problematic issue. This book places abortion in the context of reproductive medicine and explores the medicalization of abortion and the ethos of professionalism. Although the forms of legal regulation vary throughout western jurisdictions, the constant and most influential factor underlying these laws is the power of the medical profession. The medicalization of abortion has largely removed abortion from the public arena and has buried the issue under the cloak of medical autonomy. This book considers historical and contemporary issues surrounding the evolution of abortion law and speculates on future directions in abortion law and policy.

  • Author : Leslie J. Reagan
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

Download or read book When Abortion Was a Crime written by Leslie J. Reagan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of abortion in the United States, with a new preface that equips readers for what’s to come. When Abortion Was a Crime is the must-read book on abortion history. Originally published ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this award-winning study was the first to examine the entire period during which abortion was illegal in the United States, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending with that monumental case in 1973. When Abortion Was a Crime is filled with intimate stories and nuanced analysis, demonstrating how abortion was criminalized and policed—and how millions of women sought abortions regardless of the law. With this edition, Leslie J. Reagan provides a new preface that addresses the dangerous and ongoing threats to abortion access across the country, and the precarity of our current moment. While abortions have typically been portrayed as grim "back alley" operations, this deeply researched history confirms that many abortion providers—including physicians—practiced openly and safely, despite prohibitions by the state and the American Medical Association. Women could find cooperative and reliable practitioners; but prosecution, public humiliation, loss of privacy, and inferior medical care were a constant threat. Reagan's analysis of previously untapped sources, including inquest records and trial transcripts, shows the fragility of patient rights and raises provocative questions about the relationship between medicine and law. With the right to abortion increasingly under attack, this book remains the definitive history of abortion in the United States, offering vital lessons for every American concerned with health care, civil liberties, and personal and sexual freedom.
