Download or read book The Triune Story written by Robert W. Jenson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of his death in the autumn of 2017, Robert W. Jenson was arguably America's foremost theologian. Over the course of a career spanning more than five decades, much of Jenson's thought was dedicated to the theological description of how Scripture should be read-what has come to be called theological interpretation. In this rapidly expanding field of scholarship, Jenson has had an inordinate impact. Despite its importance, study of Jenson's theology of scriptural interpretation has lagged, due in large part to the longevity of his career and volume of his output. In this book, all of Jenson's writings on Scripture and its interpretation have been collected for the first time. Here readers will be able to see the evolution of Jenson's thought on this topic, as well as the scope and intensity of his late-period engagement with it. Where other twentieth-century thinkers rely on non-theological, secular methods of scriptural investigation, Jenson is willing to let go of "respectability" for the sake of a truly Christian theological interpretation. The result is a genuinely free, intellectually invigorating exercise in reading and theory from one of the greatest theologians in the last century.

Book The Abolition of Marriage

Download or read book The Abolition of Marriage written by Kevin T. Holton and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assault on traditional marriage that began in the late 1990s seemingly ended with the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing same-sex marriages in all 50 states. Christians continue to mourn the “loss” of this sacred and covenantal institution to secularists, but in doing so have forgotten their unique place as citizens not of this world but of the Kingdom of God. Christian attempts to “correct” the standing constitutional order and reclaim marriage exclusively for heterosexuals will fail. The way forward is to advocate the replacement of civil marriage laws with civil unions for heterosexuals and homosexuals alike. Both Christians and secularists will find this alternative satisfying, for it allows everyone to receive from the state equal protection of their rights, and it allows the Church and other intermediary communal institutions to define and defend marriage as they have always understood it.

Book Abolish the Family

Download or read book Abolish the Family written by Sophie Lewis and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we could do better than the family? We need to talk about the family. For those who are lucky, families can be filled with love and care, but for many they are sites of pain: from abandonment and neglect, to abuse and violence. Nobody is more likely to harm you than your family. Even in so-called happy families, the unpaid, unacknowledged work that it takes to raise children and care for each other is endless and exhausting. It could be otherwise: in this urgent, incisive polemic, leading feminist critic Sophie Lewis makes the case for family abolition. Abolish the Family traces the history of family abolitionist demands, beginning with nineteenth century utopian socialist and sex radical Charles Fourier, the Communist Manifesto and early-twentieth century Russian family abolitionist Alexandra Kollontai. Turning her attention to the 1960s, Lewis reminds us of the anti-family politics of radical feminists like Shulamith Firestone and the gay liberationists, a tradition she traces to the queer marxists bringing family abolition to the twenty-first century. This exhilarating essay looks at historic rightwing panic about Black families and the violent imposition of the family on indigenous communities, and insists: only by thinking beyond the family can we begin to imagine what might come after.

  • Author : James Allan

  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book Variables written by James Allan and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Denton, a psychology researcher, has reached a crisis in his career: he no longer believes in research, despite its claim to control variables. Everything seems pointless; nothing is proved. No matter how meticulous the research design, there is no way of knowing if there is some overlooked variable. Every study is challenged by a counter study. Dubbed his Hamlet Complex by Rachel Probender, he can't move forward, languishes in a state of inertia, his own PhD research into research at a standstill. Neil works in a department that specialises in replicating classic studies, led by Professor Matlock, famed for replicating Milgram's obedience research in England. Matlock has no doubts. For him, control of variables defines psychology as a science. Ironically, an uncontrolled variable has begun sabotaging the replications, making the department a target of media ridicule. But who and why? The saboteur is remarkably well informed, but who is the informer - a disgruntled insider perhaps? Rachel Probender, colleague and close friend of Neil, is researching the novel Frankenstein. Unknown to both, there is a connection between Frankenstein, the Psychology Department's celebrated research into obedience, and the sabotage. Suspected of being the informer, Neil, helped by Rachel, sets out to identify the informer and along the way resolves his own crisis. Set in the 1990s, the novel is a satire on the pitfalls of separate disciplines and the limitations of psychology as a science, and asks, what is science?
