They heard shouting, and cries of fear. Crafty looked down the slope and realised what had happened to cause so much panic. Without warning, the dark wall of the Shole had advanced. Crafty can't remember a time before the Shole - the terrifying mist that has engulfed most of Britain, leaving those trapped in it to either die or be transformed into terrifying monsters: the aberrations. Crafty has been stuck in his family's cellar for nearly a year, his only companions his restless, whispering dead brothers, and an unusually friendly aberration he names the Bog Queen. But then Crafty's life abruptly changes. He is ordered to report to the Castle, where he will train as a gate grub - operators of magical portals that allow the mysterious guild of Gatemancers to explore within the Shole. It is a dangerous job, with a very short life expectancy... To survive, Crafty will have to use every inch of his cunning - whatever the cost.

Book Aberrations in Black

Download or read book Aberrations in Black written by Roderick A. Ferguson and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hard-hitting look at the regulation of sexual difference and its role in circumscribing African American culture The sociology of race relations in America typically describes an intersection of poverty, race, and economic discrimination. But what is missing from the picture—sexual difference—can be as instructive as what is present. In this ambitious work, Roderick A. Ferguson reveals how the discourses of sexuality are used to articulate theories of racial difference in the field of sociology. He shows how canonical sociology—Gunnar Myrdal, Ernest Burgess, Robert Park, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and William Julius Wilson—has measured African Americans’s unsuitability for a liberal capitalist order in terms of their adherence to the norms of a heterosexual and patriarchal nuclear family model. In short, to the extent that African Americans’s culture and behavior deviated from those norms, they would not achieve economic and racial equality. Aberrations in Black tells the story of canonical sociology’s regulation of sexual difference as part of its general regulation of African American culture. Ferguson places this story within other stories—the narrative of capital’s emergence and development, the histories of Marxism and revolutionary nationalism, and the novels that depict the gendered and sexual idiosyncrasies of African American culture—works by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, and Toni Morrison. In turn, this book tries to present another story—one in which people who presumably manifest the dysfunctions of capitalism are reconsidered as indictments of the norms of state, capital, and social science. Ferguson includes the first-ever discussion of a new archival discovery—a never-published chapter of Invisible Man that deals with a gay character in a way that complicates and illuminates Ellison’s project. Unique in the way it situates critiques of race, gender, and sexuality within analyses of cultural, economic, and epistemological formations, Ferguson’s work introduces a new mode of discourse—which Ferguson calls queer of color analysis—that helps to lay bare the mutual distortions of racial, economic, and sexual portrayals within sociology.

Book Aberrations of Optical Systems

Download or read book Aberrations of Optical Systems written by W.T Welford and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the subject of optical design as a branch of applied physics is over one hundred years old, the use of aberration theory has changed considerably. Aberrations of Optical Systems covers elementary optics and aberration theory of various optical systems, including the use of nonaxially symmetric systems and diffractive optical elements in complex designs, such as head-up displays and the increasing use of scanning systems with laser illumination. The book provides the complete range of mathematical tools, formulae, and derivations needed for understanding the process of optical design and for planning optical design programs. While the treatment is mainly based on geometrical optics, some excursions into physical optics are made, particularly in connection with the problems of optical tolerances.

  • Pages : 447 pages

Download or read book Aberration of Mind written by Diane Miller Sommerville and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 150 years after its end, we still struggle to understand the full extent of the human toll of the Civil War and the psychological crisis it created. In Aberration of Mind, Diane Miller Sommerville offers the first book-length treatment of suicide in the South during the Civil War era, giving us insight into both white and black communities, Confederate soldiers and their families, as well as the enslaved and newly freed. With a thorough examination of the dynamics of both racial and gendered dimensions of psychological distress, Sommerville reveals how the suffering experienced by Southerners living in a war zone generated trauma that, in extreme cases, led some Southerners to contemplate or act on suicidal thoughts. Sommerville recovers previously hidden stories of individuals exhibiting suicidal activity or aberrant psychological behavior she links to the war and its aftermath. This work adds crucial nuance to our understanding of how personal suffering shaped the way southerners viewed themselves in the Civil War era and underscores the full human costs of war.

Book Aberration corrected Imaging In Transmission Electron Microscopy An Introduction 2nd Edition

Download or read book Aberration corrected Imaging In Transmission Electron Microscopy An Introduction 2nd Edition written by Rolf Erni and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aberration-Corrected Imaging in Transmission Electron Microscopy provides an introduction to aberration-corrected atomic-resolution electron microscopy imaging in materials and physical sciences. It covers both the broad beam transmission mode (TEM; transmission electron microscopy) and the scanning transmission mode (STEM; scanning transmission electron microscopy). The book is structured in three parts. The first part introduces the basics of conventional atomic-resolution electron microscopy imaging in TEM and STEM modes. This part also describes limits of conventional electron microscopes and possible artefacts which are caused by the intrinsic lens aberrations that are unavoidable in such instruments. The second part introduces fundamental electron optical concepts and thus provides a brief introduction to electron optics. Based on the first and second parts of the book, the third part focuses on aberration correction; it describes the various aberrations in electron microscopy and introduces the concepts of spherical aberration correctors and advanced aberration correctors, including correctors for chromatic aberration. This part also provides guidelines on how to optimize the imaging conditions for atomic-resolution STEM and TEM imaging. This second edition has been completely revised and updated in order to incorporate the very recent technological and scientific achievements that have been realized since the first edition appeared in 2010.

Book Fundamentals Of Practical Aberration Theory Fundamental Knowledge And Technics For Optical Designers

Download or read book Fundamentals Of Practical Aberration Theory Fundamental Knowledge And Technics For Optical Designers written by Yoshiya Matsui and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-06-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, although most of the optical design processes are automated with the aid of computer software, the fundamental question of how we can generate the initial optical configuration such that it can be dealt with by the computer remains. The answer can only be found in applying techniques based on the aberration theory. Previous works have explored this subject matter. None, however, has covered the full extent of first deriving the aberration theory and then illustrating with the help of various kinds of actual examples how it can be applied effectively to practical design problems. This book is significant in its attempt to put theory into practice for the first time to provide new insight and knowledge to its readers.
