Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys, and Churches of England and Wales: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial In St. George's Chapel blended lie the oppressor and the oppressed, for in the southern aisle a black slab covers the remains of Henry VI. Removed hither from Chertsey. Pilgrims for a time came to this, as to a shrine, and found a cure for the headache in putting on an old red hat which the king had worn. Near to his grave another slab covers the remains of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. The tall apsidal chantry at the east part of the aisle bears the name of the Earl of Lincoln, Lord High Admiral to Queen Elizabeth; and near his grave lies Richard Beauchamp, Bishop of Salisbury, under whose care the chapel was built. At the western end of the aisle a richly-adorned monument has been erected by the Queen to the memory of the late Duchess of Gloucester, and other members of that branch of the Royal Family. Opposite to this is a little chantry which projects into the Lower Ward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cathedrals Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales Vol 1

This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales, Vol. 1: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial The differences also in plan are considerable; these are less conspicuous in the older cathedrals, though even there a distinction may often be noticed. In those of Norman date in England the dominant ground-plan is almost always a Latin cross with well-developed arms. There is no trace whatever of the basilica type, though possibly this may once have been visible in the churches of earlier date in this country, as it is certainly more permanently impressed on those of France. But when we come to the cathedrals built in the Pointed styles, the difference is even more persistently marked. Contrast, for example, the ground plans of the Cathedrals of Paris, Amiens, Rheims, or Chartres with English buildings. All of these, even the last, cover spaces of ground large in proportion to their length; their area being in the case of Notre Dame (the smallest), feet, and of Amiens (the largest), feet. Salisbury, which is rather longer than Notre Dame, covers less ground by full feet; and York, which is quite fifty feet longer than Amiens, and is one of the most spacious of our cathedrals, occupies an area but slightly greater. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales, Vol. 2: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial The situation of the church is hardly less fine. The town is built upon a hill, of which the castle occupies one edge. From it the ground shelves upwards, to form a broad and moderately level plateau; and on the highest part of this a church was built, which has for centuries been the mother-church of the town. Thus, from far and wide, from windings of the valley, from many an undulation of the neighbouring district, its lofty tower forms a conspicuous landmark, indi cating the position of the county town, and calling up memories of a family whose power at one time was little less than regal. Book The Ruined Abbeys of Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ruined Abbeys of Britain Classic Reprint written by Frederick Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ruined Abbeys of Britain The object of the present publication is to supply a want - that of a pictorial history of the chief ruined abbeys of Britain. There are many valuable histories of individual or local groupings of abbeys; many detailed accounts in country histories; and numberless guide books, more or less complete, but generally very meagre in detail. There are also a few works of a more comprehensive character, which profess to give accounts of all the principal ruins, but these are mainly mere epitomes, and often without views or plans. There appeared, therefore, to be an opening for a general history, giving a full historical and descriptive account of the ruins, with ample illustrations, which should be at once a book for the library and for the drawing-room table, - a book for the student and for the superficial reader. Such a work is contemplated in these pages; the materials are gathered from the most authentic sources, and have been arranged in consecutive order, with a view of avoiding, on the one hand the dry matter-of - fact style of the antiquary, on the other the verbose style which ignores facts and details, and indulges rather in poetical imaginings than in accuracy. The font is a Norman one, of stone, with fine Perpendicular canopy. Near it is the quaint figure of an old man, which holds the poor-box. It represents "Old Tristram," in his life-time a professional beggar in Halifax. At the west end of the south aisle stands what is to some the most interesting monument in the church. It is in memory of Robert Farrer, a native of Halifax, last Prior of Nostel, subsequently Protestant Bishop of St. David's, and finally burnt for heresy in 1555. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ruined Abbeys of Great Britain "I humbly crave leave, before I advance any farther, publickly to profess myself to be a sincere, though very unworthy Member of the Church of England, and that I have as true and as hearty Affection for her Interest as perhaps any other Person whatsoever. And yet I cannot but here publickly declare that I think it would have been more happy for Her, as well as for the Nation in general had King Henry VIII. only reformed and not destroyed the Abbeys and other Religious Houses. Monastic Institution is very ancient, and it had been very laudable had he reduced the Manner of Worship to the Primitive Form."
