Book Transitions

Download or read book Transitions written by Peter W Newton and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formidable challenges confront Australia and its human settlements: the mega-metro regions, major and provincial cities, coastal, rural and remote towns. The key drivers of change and major urban vulnerabilities have been identified and principal among them are resource-constraints, such as oil, water, food, skilled labour and materials, and carbon-constraints, linked to climate change and a need to transition to renewable energy, both of which will strongly shape urban development this century. Transitions identifies 21st century challenges to the resilience of Australia’s cities and regions that flow from a range of global and local influences, and offers a portfolio of solutions to these critical problems and vulnerabilities. The solutions will require fundamental transitions in many instances: to our urban infrastructures, to our institutions and how they plan for the future, and perhaps most of all to ourselves in terms of our lifestyles and consumption patterns. With contributions from 92 researchers - all leaders in their respective fields - this book offers the expertise to chart pathways for a sustainability transition.

Book The Domestic Politics of International Relations

Download or read book The Domestic Politics of International Relations written by Roderic Alley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. An important comparative study, which considers the domestic/international interface. The book covers climate change in Australia; New Zealand and the abolition of nuclear weapons; the Bougainville conflict and settlement in Papua New Guinea; Decolonization (New Caledonia, East Timor, West Papua); Indigenous Rights (Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji); Governance Reform and Environmental Management challenges in the Pacific Island states. The conclusion evaluates propositions advanced in the introductory chapter regarding the distinctive domestic/international issues raised and argues that, in order to comprehend foreign relations in an increasingly complex world, there is no substitute for a thorough knowledge of distinctive local, social and political dynamics shaping international orientations. The theme of the book is the way that these interactions have operated in the cases examined.

Book Climate Change in the South Pacific Impacts and Responses in Australia New Zealand and Small Island States

Download or read book Climate Change in the South Pacific Impacts and Responses in Australia New Zealand and Small Island States written by Alexander Gillespie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALEXANDER GILLESPIE & WILLIAM C.G. BURNS The idea for this book grew out of the Ecopolitics conference in Canberra, Australia in 1996. The conference captured the ferment of the climate change debate in the South Pacific, as well as some its potential implications for the region’s inhabitants and e- systems. At that conference, one of the editors (Gillespie) delivered a paper on climate change issues in the region, as did Ros Taplin and Mark Diesendorf, who are also c- tributors to this volume. This book focuses on climate change issues in Australia, New Zealand, and the small island nations in the Pacific as the world struggles to cope with possible the impacts of environmental change and to formulate effective responses. While Australia and New Zealand’s per capita emissions of greenhouse gases are among the highest in the world, their aggregate contributions are small. However, both nations may exert a disprop- tionate influence in the global greenhouse debate because their obstinate positions at recent conferences of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on C- mate Change (FCCC) may provide justification for other developed nations, as well as developing countries, to refuse to make meaningful reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions.

Book Changing Land Management

Download or read book Changing Land Management written by David J. Pannell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2011 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a rich and extensive history of research into factors that encourage farmers to change their land management practices, or inhibit them from doing so. Yet this research is often under-utilized in practice. Changing Land Managementprovides key insights from past and cutting-edge research to support decision-makers as they attempt to assist rural communities adapting to changed circumstances, such as new technologies, new environmental imperatives, new market opportunities or changed climate. Common themes are the need for an appreciation of the diversity of land managers and their contexts, of the diversity of factors that influence land management decisions, and of the challenges that face government programs that are intended to change land management.

Book Sustainable Farm Forestry in the Tropics

Download or read book Sustainable Farm Forestry in the Tropics written by Stephen Robert Harrison and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The text is valuable in that it describes tropical small-scale farm forestry and the complex interrelationships between social, economic, and biological issues quite well . . . For readers interested in tropical forestry in a developed nation, the book is a detailed and excellent source of information.' - Matthew Pelkki, Natural Resources Journal There has been an increased awareness of the need to establish and maintain small-scale forestry in tropical countries. This is due to concerns over continued deforestation, as well as the long-term environmental and economic resources these plantations can contribute if managed successfully. This book examines the constraints that limit the development of small-scale forestry in tropical environments and how they can be overcome.
