Book Abandoned Schools of Tennessee

Download or read book Abandoned Schools of Tennessee written by Jay Farrell and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abandoned structures are places that open the imagination and invite interpretation. Crumbling bricks, distressed steel, paint, wood, and weathered remnants of human life are crossed by time, vandalism, and animal tracks, inviting one to picture what once was. Derelict buildings offer a unique, distressed beauty. While often overlooked by passers-by, their skeletal remains act as the perfect subject for the lens of a camera, quietly waiting to be documented and shared. Abandoned Schools of Tennessee takes you on a field trip, looking inside schools that once witnessed children's laughter and learning, years or even decades after the last lesson was taught. Readers will enjoy a visually detailed, narrated tour of the remains of rural one-room schoolhouses in East Tennessee, a bone-chilling youth detention center, and other former learning institutions taken over by time and miscreants. Readers are encouraged to explore the forgotten corners of the state, see the world through different eyes, and take the long road home.

Download or read book Unloved and Forgotten written by Keith Dotson and published by . This book was released on 2019-08 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over ten years, fine art photographer Keith Dotson has explored and photographed abandoned places in black and white. His first photo book, "Unloved and Forgotten: Fine Art Photographs of Abandoned Places," features a selection of the most intriguing and beautiful locations he found in his travels. It includes richly reproduced photographs of abandoned houses, schools, churches, barns, storefronts, and even entire abandoned towns. The book highlights fascinating locations like Adams, Tennessee (home of the infamous Bell Witch legend), and Cairo, Illinois, which has rapidly depopulated and is in the process of becoming abandoned. He offers concise backstories of several locations -- a deserted mining town in Arkansas, a forsaken 1952 Plymouth found crashed against a tree on a steep hillside in the woods, and a derelict high school building with a historic graveyard on its property. Included is a brief history of George L. Mesker and Company, the mail order business that sold ornate, prefabricated ironwork storefronts to small towns across America starting in the 1880s. Mesker storefronts can still be seen on many abandoned (and preserved) buildings. The 48-page book is lavishly illustrated throughout with Dotson's black and white photographs.

  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Highlander written by John M. Glen and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John M. Glen's Highlander: No Ordinary School, 1932-1962 first appeared in 1988, it was hailed as a full and authoritative study of one of the South's most extraordinary and controversial institutions. Now, in this second edition, Glen updates Highlander's story through the 1990s. He incorporates newly available materials and the latest scholarship to detail the school's recent work in Appalachia, its efforts to bring international grassroots groups together on common issues, and its support of emerging economic and environmental justice campaigns. First named the Highlander Folk School and established in 1932 by Myles Horton and Don West near Monteagle, Tennessee, this adult education center has been both a vital resource for southern and Appalachian activists and a catalyst for several major movements for social change. During its first thirty years, Highlander served as a community folk school, as a training center for southern labor and Farmer's Union members, and as a meeting place for black and white civil rights workers. Its advocacy of racial equality ultimately prompted the state of Tennessee to revoke the charter of the original institution in 1962. Undaunted, the school's officers reorganized the institution as the Highlander Research and Education Center in Knoxville, where it gave ongoing support to the civil rights movement and promoted a multiracial poor people's coalition. Today, operating in New Market, Tennessee, it continues to devise new strategies of progressive change from the experiences of ordinary people. This comprehensive history offers a unique perspective on the movements, institutions, organizations, and individuals that permanently reshaped our understanding of the South and Appalachia in the twentieth century. It also suggests the range of problems and possibilities of using education to achieve economic, political, and racial justice.
