Book Desolate Barns of the American West

Download or read book Desolate Barns of the American West written by Marques Vickers and published by Marquis Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition represents a photographic celebration of damaged and often abandoned barns and silos located within the rural Western United States. Over fifty structures are photographed amidst a backdrop of panoramic mountains, turbulent rivers and sagebrush flatlands. Many are inaccessible via roadways or difficult to approach due to private property restrictions. The captures images are spread over California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. The objective of this photography project is to isolate the abandoned and frequently decaying remnants of a uniquely national architecture treasure. Barns and silos represent an iconic and important American rural tradition. An altered historic frontier has left many of these monoliths forsaken and deteriorating organically into the landscape. American agriculture has become forever transformed by advanced machinery, technology and the consolidation of land holdings. These remaining stately buildings represent a crossroads between traditional rural lifestyle and the effects of modernity. In numerous instances, timber framed structures undergo a gradual deterioration before collapsing into splinted heaps. Their disintegrating structural supports corrode until gravity ultimately prevails. The wood remnants are often simply left to blend harmoniously into the natural surroundings. The isolation and expansive landscape of the American northwest provides an evocative comparison to contemporary confined urban and suburban environments. The continuity of these utilitarian structures remains timeless in spite of their condition.

Book excerpt: Ukiah Oregon is quickly becoming one of the greatest trackers in the country. Some call it luck—those closest to him call it instinct. Abandoned as a child, he was found running with a wolf pack. Now, in his job as a private investigator, he puts his nose to the ground to track down missing persons and fugitives from the law. A heightened sense of smell and taste—plus a photographic memory—make him an invaluable asset to his partner. But when Ukiah kills a crazed young woman in self-defense, he draws the attention of the FBI’s most wanted: a violent and elusive gang known as the Pack. And it won’t be long before Ukiah discovers just how much he has in common with the Pack: a bond of brotherhood, blood...and destiny.

  • Author : Cheryl Hill

  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Fire Lookouts of Oregon written by Cheryl Hill and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first lookouts were rustic camps on mountaintops, where men and women were stationed to keep an eye out for wildfires. As the importance of fire prevention grew, a lookout construction boom resulted in hundreds of cabins and towers being built on Oregon's high points. When aircraft and cameras became more cost-effective and efficient methods of fire detection, many old lookouts were abandoned or removed. Of the many hundreds of lookouts built in Oregon over the past 100 years, less than 175 remain, and only about half of these are still manned. However, some lookouts are being repurposed as rental cabins, and volunteers are constantly working to save endangered lookouts. This book tells the story of Oregon's fire lookouts, from their heyday to their decline, and of the effort to save the ones that are left." --
