Book The Language of Luxe

Download or read book The Language of Luxe written by Ed Ng (Architect) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded over a decade ago, AB Concept has confirmed its position as one of Asia's most ambitious, forward-thinking architectural and design firms. Honoured with an array of international awards, AB Concept has been behind some of the world's most acclaimed executive developments as well as hospitality and residential projects. For the first time in their decade-long history, cofounders Ed Ng and Terence Ngan have compiled their stunning projects into one collection, Language of Luxe by AB Concept. Chronicling their projects over 300 pages, Language of Luxe maps AB Concept's evolution, offering an insight into the team's creative process and artistic vision. As Ed and Terence are authorities in their field, government bodies - including Create HK and Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) - regularly invite them to speak at public forums to promote Hong Kong as a design hub. Innovative and adventurous, Ed and Terence's designs are daring explorations of space and style, each one revealing their genuine respect for history, culture and the arts. Based in Hong Kong and with an office in Bangkok, Ed and Terence are part of a new generation of Asian designers who are bringing a cross-cultural aesthetic to their designs and making an impact on the international scene. Every AB Concept property reflects Ed and Terence's ability to make the elegant look effortless. Driven to create sensual spaces that seamlessly integrate form and function, their style dictum is simple: Understated rather than overkill. As AB Concept's lead architect, Hospitality Design named Terence Ngan as one of its 2010 'Wave of the Future' honorees, acknowledging both the originality of his designs and his technical mastery. For each project, Ed Ng introduces an element of surprise. Whether it's an unexpected use of colour or a modern twist on a classic form, each project tells a new story and evokes a sense of individuality. Together with select residential developments, Language of Luxe captures AB Concept's most acclaimed hospitality projects, including the SPA at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore, the W Retreat & Spa in Bali and Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan.

Book excerpt: This report highlights the accomplishments of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) consultations and round-table discussions on the PMP/AB that were held during 2019. These include the following: (i) the Second Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB2) (29–31 January 2019); (ii) the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB): First Technical Working Group Meeting (TWG1) (20–22 March 2019); and (iii) the Roundtable Discussions on Aquaculture Biosecurity (22–26 July 2019). It reports on the progress made towards formulating, planning and developing implementation mechanisms for the PMP/AB, based on the comments and recommendations provided by the wide range of stakeholders and experts who participated in these events. In August 2019, the Tenth Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) Sub-Committee on Aquaculture, held in Trondheim, Norway endorsed the PMP/AB and the development of a multidonor-assisted, long-term aquaculture biosecurity component of an aquaculture programme, including its five pillars. Therefore, the FAO, through its Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, now has a mandate for the further development and implementation of the PMP/AB. Future activities include the establishment of an official Technical Working Group (TWG) that will drive the further development of the technical aspects of the PMP/AB, wider consensus building, initial application (pilot testing) and refinement of the PMP/AB tools, and resource mobilization for the aquaculture biosecurity programme. Guidance documents and resources for advocacy and training on the PMP/AB are currently in development to facilitate adoption at the national level.

Book Self Reflection for the Opaque Mind

Download or read book Self Reflection for the Opaque Mind written by T. Parent and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to solve a grave problem about critical self-reflection. The worry is that we critical thinkers are all in "epistemic bad faith" in light of what psychology tells us. After all, the research shows not merely that we are bad at detecting "ego-threatening" thoughts à la Freud. It also indicates that we are ignorant of even our ordinary thoughts—e.g., reasons for our moral judgments of others (Haidt 2001), and even mundane reasons for buying one pair of stockings over another! (Nisbett & Wilson 1977) However, reflection on one’s thoughts requires knowing what those thoughts are in the first place. So if ignorance is the norm, why attempt self-reflection? The activity would just display naivety about psychology. Yet while respecting all the data, this book argues that, remarkably, we are sometimes infallible in our self-discerning judgments. Even so, infallibility does not imply indubitability, and there is no Cartesian ambition to provide a "foundation" for empirical knowledge. The point is rather to explain how self-reflection as a rational activity is possible.

Download or read book Report of the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity PMP AB First Technical Working Group Meeting written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting, where experts from competent authorities, intergovernmental organizations, the aquaculture industry, academe, and research institutions examined the two previous consultations on the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB) and clarified issues and concerns raised during these two consultations. A consensus was reached on the definition of the PMP/AB as a pathway that builds on existing frameworks, supported by appropriate tools (via the “PMP/AB toolkit”). The PMP/AB focuses on aquaculture biosecurity, which includes health management and reduction of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The PMP/AB will not directly focus on food safety; however, it will promote sustainable aquaculture production with good husbandry practices, environmental practices, and prudent treatment or antimicrobial use.

Book excerpt: A one-stop reference guide to design for safety principles and applications Design for Safety (DfSa) provides design engineers and engineering managers with a range of tools and techniques for incorporating safety into the design process for complex systems. It explains how to design for maximum safe conditions and minimum risk of accidents. The book covers safety design practices, which will result in improved safety, fewer accidents, and substantial savings in life cycle costs for producers and users. Readers who apply DfSa principles can expect to have a dramatic improvement in the ability to compete in global markets. They will also find a wealth of design practices not covered in typical engineering books—allowing them to think outside the box when developing safety requirements. Design Safety is already a high demand field due to its importance to system design and will be even more vital for engineers in multiple design disciplines as more systems become increasingly complex and liabilities increase. Therefore, risk mitigation methods to design systems with safety features are becoming more important. Designing systems for safety has been a high priority for many safety-critical systems—especially in the aerospace and military industries. However, with the expansion of technological innovations into other market places, industries that had not previously considered safety design requirements are now using the technology in applications. Design for Safety: Covers trending topics and the latest technologies Provides ten paradigms for managing and designing systems for safety and uses them as guiding themes throughout the book Logically defines the parameters and concepts, sets the safety program and requirements, covers basic methodologies, investigates lessons from history, and addresses specialty topics within the topic of Design for Safety (DfSa) Supplements other books in the series on Quality and Reliability Engineering Design for Safety is an ideal book for new and experienced engineers and managers who are involved with design, testing, and maintenance of safety critical applications. Book Management of Periprosthetic Joint Infection

Download or read book Management of Periprosthetic Joint Infection written by Klaus-Dieter Kühn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is among the most serious complications in the field of endoprosthetics. The number of PJIs is increasing worldwide and poses a real interdisciplinary challenge for everyone involved. For the patient concerned, it is necessary to promptly work out an adequate therapy solution to fight off the infection. Both the clinical experience of the surgeon and the proper diagnostic processes are prerequisite for the reliable detection and identification of an infection. The microbiologist is responsible for identifying the causative germs by screening the patient’s synovial fluid and tissue samples. Based on the findings and subsequent resistance testing, the infectious disease specialist can recommend the appropriate antibiotic therapy. Furthermore, the clinical pharmacist is consulted regularly throughout the therapy to discuss the risk of potential drug interactions. The surgeon will proceed with the revision surgery, following defined algorithms. Adequate radical debridement of infected and necrotic surrounding tissue is the most important step towards a successful cure of the infection. Accompanying the surgery, anti-infective agents are given systemically and locally. While systemic application of anti-infectives mainly reduces the number of haematogenic-spreading planktonic germs, local application immediately forms a colonization barrier and protects the implant from sessile biofilm formation. Concurrently, antibiotics are actively released from the implant, resulting in local germ reduction. Thus, local agents are embedded in the concept of surgical PJI treatment as a reliable adjuvant measure and they sustainably support the successful outcome. In one-stage procedures, local agents are released from specialized antibiotic-loaded bone cements, while in two- or multi-stage procedures, local agents are released from corresponding temporary spacers (interim prostheses). Even from an economic standpoint, the combination of systemic and local agent application is meaningful. Furthermore, there are some interesting trends towards the coating of metallic implants to protect against biofilm formation on the implant surface. On the basis of their personal experience, specialists from all over the world present, explain and discuss preventive approaches, appropriate diagnostic strategies for detection, reproducible effective surgical treatments as well as the economic impact of PJI. The reader can use this book as a solid platform for comparing their own approach to PJI treatment with the specialists’ recommendations.
