While a great deal has been written on Scotland and the First World War, the question of how it affected criminality has been underexplored. Although mass enlistment reduced offending drastically, servicemen based in Scotland continued to commit offences - whilst some crimes, such as bigamy, actually rose during the war. After demobilisation, which saw crime rise again, fears over "brutalisation" created a belief that Scotland was a more violent place than before the war. By analysing criminal statistics from 1909 to 1926, drawn from previously unavailable archival sources, prison registers, anonymous interviews, newspapers and legal proceedings, this book argues that the First World War had a socially disruptive impact on Scotland, evident in abnormal crime patterns during and after the war. Covering categories of offence from murder and culpable homicide to lesser felonies, such as theft and fraud, it discusses how contemporary notions around class, gender and respectability shaped the perception of crimes committed by ex-servicemen. It also looks at whether the war had a disruptive influence on law and order by desensitising society and through psychological damage to a generation of men, examining such commonalities as alcoholism, family breakdown, health problems and unemployment, and the prevalence of domestic violence and spousal homicide.

The new military history of recent decades has demanded a broadening of the source base beyond elite accounts or those that concentrate solely on battlefield experiences. Armies did not operate in isolation, and men’s family ties influenced the course of events in a variety of ways. Campfollowing women and children occupied a liminal space in campaign life. Those who travelled "on the strength" of the army received rations in return for providing services such as laundry and nursing, but they could also be grouped with prostitutes and condemned as a ‘burden’ by officers. Parents, wives, and offspring left behind at home remained in soldiers’ thoughts, despite an army culture aimed at replacing kin with regimental ties. Soldiers’ families’ suffering, both on the march and back in Britain, attracted public attention at key points in this period as well. This series provides, for the first time in one place, a wide body of texts relating to common soldiers’ personal lives: the women with whom they became involved, their children, and the families who cared for them. In this comprehensive examination of the unit's composition, contribution, and postwar fate, Edward A. Miller, Jr., demonstrates the value of the Twenty-ninth as a means of understanding the Civil War experience of African American soldiers, including the prejudice that shaped their service. Miller details the formation of the Twenty-ninth, its commendable performance but incompetent leadership during the Petersburg battle, and the refilling of its ranks, mostly by black enlistees who served as substitutes for drafted white men. He recounts the unit's role in the final campaign against the Army of Northern Virginia; its final, needless mission to the Texas border; the tragic postwar fate of most of its officers; and the continued discrimination and economic hardship endured after the war by the soldiers.
