Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Working Plan for Forest Lands Near Pine Bluff, Arkansas These stem analyses included the following measurements: Diameter at 4.5 feet from the ground. Diameter on the stump and at the top of each log, inside and outside the bark. Height of stump. Length of each log and of the crown. The rings were counted on the stump and at the end of each log, and the distance to each ten-year point from the bark was measured. From these measurements it was possible to ascertain the rate of growth of the trees both in height and in diameter. No investigations were undertaken of the rate of growth of the hardwoods. The field expenses necessary to the preparation of this working plan were borne by the Sawyer & Austin Lumber Company. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Working Plan for Land Belonging to the City of Fall River on the North Watuppa Watershed Although this is a subject of great importance to this country, and one much discussed of late, it has never been carefully studied. Even European foresters, who have investigated this subject for many years, have not as yet established their final conclusions covering the whole field. That a relation does exist is indisputable, for forest destruction always produces a change in the character of the stream flow. Book The Theory and Practice of Working Plans

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Working Plans written by A. B. Recknagel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Working Plans: Forest Organization This book does not pretend to present any original theories of Forest Organization, but merely the best of European efforts along this line adapted to the present needs of American forestry. The necessary data were gathered in the course of a year's study abroad, and, in their application, the experience gained in five years of similar work for the forest service in various parts of the United States was constantly kept in mind. The theoretical part has, therefore, been reduced to the minimum; similarly, the description of such intensive methods of regulating the yield as that by area and volume in periods has been merely sketched for the sake of completeness, since its application to America is of the far distant future, if ever. In a word, while sacrificing nothing to the completeness necessary in a textbook, the aim has been to make the book of value not only to the student, but also to the practising forester, and hence theory has in each case been subordinated to practice. It will be ample reward for the time and labor spent, if this book takes its humble place in the growing list of American text-books on forestry. Grateful acknowledgment is made to those who so unselfishly assisted in the collection of the subject-matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."
