Book excerpt: The book of Deuteronomy is a call to obedience—the proper response to God's faithfulness and love. Consisting primarily of speeches that Moses gave to the Israelites shortly before they entered the Promised Land, Moses' words proclaimed God's covenant faithfulness in hopes of motivating the Israelites to obey God despite the coming temptation to conform to the Canaanite culture. The challenges they faced then are remarkably parallel to those facing Christians today as we grapple with the issue of obedience in a world that offers other attractive ways of life. We wonder: How can we be faithful to God? And how do we help our children and the people we lead to be faithful? This book tells us how Moses tackled these challenges and, as Paul confirms in the New Testament, Deuteronomy serves "as an example...written down for our instruction" (1 Cor. 10:11). Ajith Fernando unpacks the relevance of Deuteronomy and captivates us with rich anecdotes from his thirty-five years of ministry to first-generation Christians in Sri Lanka. He offers concrete examples of how the truths contained in Deuteronomy can be applied, and he teaches us that obedience is the necessary response to the God who loves and saves us. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Book excerpt: The NIV Application Commentary helps you communicate and apply biblical text effectively in today's context. To bring the ancient messages of the Bible into today's world, each passage is treated in three sections: Original Meaning. Concise exegesis to help readers understand the original meaning of the biblical text in its historical, literary, and cultural context. Bridging Contexts. A bridge between the world of the Bible and the world of today, built by discerning what is timeless in the timely pages of the Bible. Contemporary Significance. This section identifies comparable situations to those faced in the Bible and explores relevant application of the biblical messages. The author alerts the readers of problems they may encounter when seeking to apply the passage and helps them think through the issues involved. This unique, award-winning commentary is the ideal resource for today's preachers, teachers, and serious students of the Bible, giving them the tools, ideas, and insights they need to communicate God's Word with the same powerful impact it had when it was first written.

Book A Word Upon Deuteronomy Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Word Upon Deuteronomy "Would that mine adversary had written a book," exclaimed the persecuted patriarch, in the conviction that innocence is sure to gain the day, as soon as the charges brought against it are plainly stated and exposed to the daylight. We might put the same wish into the mouth of the persecuted Word of God, at which men are ever cavilling, and upon which all manner of unreconcilable imputations are now being cast. In this case we would add the wish, 0, that those concerned would read the book, - for in general they neither can nor will, and thus are governed by the unhappy impression, that those who are learned and experienced on the subject, have discovered some fatal flaw. We protest that if it could be assumed that the works of the German rationalists were commonly read, we would feel ourselves free from the obligation to refute them, for, to every devout mind they refute themselves. Before coming to a close they infallibly suffer the confession to escape them (see the words of Ewald and Baur quoted further on), that the fault is not in the Word of God, but in the inveterate infidelity of their own hearts. But in the present moment, there is a call for a new commitment to God and a fresh understanding of the nature of the community of God's people. Though the scene is set more than three thousand years in the past, Deuteronomy is still a book of considerable contemporary relevance. The book of Deuteronomy, however, is not only a book of contemporary relevance. It has been, and continues to be, one of the most important and debated works in modern biblical scholarship. - Author's preface.

Book Word and Presence

  • Author : Ian Cairns
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780802801609

Download or read book Word and Presence written by Ian Cairns and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary Ian Cairns presents Deuteronomy as a slowly evolving, complex composite -- as legal code, as treaty text or covenant, as Moses' farewell speech, and as the final volume of the Pentateuch. Despite Deuteronomy's structural complexity, however, Cairns shows how the theme "Word and Presence" permeates the entire book: God is the living Presence who can be encountered and known through his word addressed to each generation in turn. This commentary is unique in its emphasis on the theology of Deuteronomy (e.g., law as "humane instruction") as well as in its modern applications and illustrations from non-Western cultures. Book The Book of Deuteronomy Chapters 1 11

Download or read book The Book of Deuteronomy Chapters 1 11 written by Bill T. Arnold and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The book of Deuteronomy can rightly be called a compendium of the most important ideas of the Old Testament.” So begins this commentary on the book of Deuteronomy, which Bill Arnold treats as the heart of the Torah and the fulcrum of the Old Testament—crystallizing the themes of the first four books of the Bible and establishing the theological foundation of the books that follow. After a thorough introduction that explores these and other matters, Arnold provides an original translation of the first eleven chapters of Deuteronomy along with verse-by-verse commentary (with the translation and commentary of the remaining chapters following in a second volume). As with the other entries in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament, Arnold remains rooted in the book’s historical context while focusing on its meaning and use as Christian Scripture today. Ideal for pastors, students, scholars, and interested laypersons, this commentary is an authoritative yet accessible companion to the book of Deuteronomy.

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible. The book of Deuteronomy contains the final words of Moses to Israel as they wait to enter the Promised Land. Reflecting on the nation’s past mistakes, Moses calls Israel to faithful obedience while recounting the past faithfulness of God. This study guide helps Christians understand that the only hope for obedience to God's commands is the grace of God found in the person and work of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This milestone commentary by Jack Lundbom is intended for any and all readers who want to better know and understand the key Pentateuchal book of Deuteronomy, which has had a huge influence on both Judaism and Christianity over the centuries. For Jews Deuteronomy contains the Decalogue and the Shema -- “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one” (6:4) -- supplemented by a code of primal legislation. Deuteronomy is much cited in the New Testament and has come to occupy an important place in the life and doctrine of the Christian church. It lifts up important wisdom themes such as humane treatment and benevolence to the poor and needy and is rich in theology, calling repeatedly on Israel to reject other gods and worship the Lord alone as holy. Besides drawing on language, archaeology, and comparative Near Eastern material, Lundbom’s commentary employs rhetorical criticism in explicating the biblical text. Lundbom also cites later Jewish interpretation of the book of Deuteronomy and makes numerous New Testament connections. An appendix contains all citations of Deuteronomy in the New Testament.
