This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voyage to North-America, Vol. 1 of 2 After reading almost every Thing that has been writ on the Manner in which America might have been peopled, we seem to be just where we were before this great and interesting Question began to be agitated; notwithstanding, it would require a moderate Volume to relate only the various Opinions of the learned on this Subject. For most Part of them have given so much into the marvellous, almost all of them have built their Conjectures on Foundations so ruinous, or have had recourse to certain Resemblances of Names, Manners, Customs, Religion and Languages, so very frivolous, which it would, in my Opinion, be as useless to refute, as it is impossible to reconcile with each other. It is not, perhaps, to be wondered at, that those who have first treated this matter mould wander in a Way which had not as yet been marked out, and in which they must travel without a Guide. By 1718, however, posts had been built on Lake Superior and at the foot of Green Bay, and from these vantage points it was proposed to make fur ther attempts to solve the mystery of the West and to open a way to the westward sea. In France new forces were coming to the fore, and an era of great expectations and wild speculation was being initiated under the leadership of the regent, Philippe Duc d'orleans. America was the land of boundless resources, the fortune of every one in the kingdom from scullion to courtier was to be made by investing in the stock of the Company of the West, founded especially to exploit cen tral North America; the name Mississippi was on the lips of noble and peasant, implying boundless fertility and endless wealth. True, the Mississippi Bubble, as it was called after it burst, was located in Louisiana at the mouth of the mighty stream. Nevertheless the entire val ley was expected to contribute to its glory and the limits of the valley were yet to be defined. The regent deter mined to send out a secret mission to ascertain the pros pects of western exploration by way of the upper Great Lakes and the upper reaches Of the great river. Download or read book Travels in North America Vol 1 of 2 written by Basil Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in North America, Vol. 1 of 2: In the Years 1827 and 1828 The chief object I had in view in visiting America was to see things with my own eyes, in order to ascertain, by personal inspection, how far the sentiments prevalent in England with respect to that country were correct or otherwise. To avoid all undue influence, I considered it best to defer reading the works of preceding travellers, until I should have formed my own opinions on the subject; but I found so much plea sure during the journey, from the freshness of original and unbiassed observation, that on my return I resolved to persevere in this self-denial somewhat longer, that my narrative also might be derived, as far as possible, from those local sources of information which had fallen within the reach of my own inquiries. The habits of an active professional life having put it out of my power to study in the closet many of the subjects discussed in these volumes, I have endeavoured, in touching them, to supply the want of reading, by availing myself of a pretty extensive acquaintance with the actual workings of numerous other political and moral experiments, which chance has thrown in my way in different quarters of the globe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voyage of Discovery, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel of American Society "Why are you going to the United States?" asked an American, no longer in his first youth, of a young Englishwoman on board the Teutonic, the second day after they had left Liverpool. The sky was blue, the sea was smooth, the hour was noon. The lady was stretched on a deck-chair, the American sat beside her. Both were fine types of their races, both had faces which arrested and held the attention. Mr. Quintin Ferrars was unusually tall for an American, his limbs were not loosely knit, and his walk was erect and firm, attributes more common to the dwellers in the prairie than to those on the Fifth Avenue. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voyage to North America, and the West Indies, in 1817 M. Laurent Faures, to whom I had been introduced by Messrs. Curcier and Ravisies, the merchants with whom I had placed my' fu'nds, frequently conducts me to view the objects worthy notice in Philadelphia, which is the most beautiful and largest city of the, United States; nor does there exist one perhaps in the known world, which is built on so regular a plan. All the streets are either straight, or parallel with the Delawar, being at least eight fathoms 'wide, paved with small round stones, similar to many places in the South of France. On either side there are footways, from eight to ten feet wide, paved with bricks, and kept remark ably clean, and about every hundred paces distant, on either side the street, there are pumps supporting lamps, added to which, poplars and plantain-trees skirt the foot-paths, whose verdure, du ring the summer season, must agreeably break the uniform colour' of the houses, the major part of which are built of brick. The doors are usually very much ornamented, and open upon a ight' of white marble steps, decorated by a tasteful iron balcony, which is kept peculiarly neat and clean. In the middle of 'the city is Market Street, being nearly twice the width of any other, which divides in the centre all those that run parallel with the river.' The market is kept in the middle, being a kind of granary, sup ported by pillars, the 'whole displaying an air of perfect clean liness. It' is divided in several parts, each appropriated to its peculiar kind of merchandize of which the butchers struck me most forcibly. This class of men, who appear perfectly well are habited in a shirt, or frock, of the most delicate whiteness. The market is only held in the morning, they do not break the bones as is customary with us, but saw them, which gives the meat a far more pleasing appearance.
