The earliest, that on the "Art of Translation," was first published as long ago as 1895, in the Quarterly Review, the others in the same periodical, or in the Monthly Review, at intervals extending over some ten years. The latest, that on "In Memoriam after Fifty Years," appeared in the Edinburgh Review early in 1906, shortly after the first, and separate publication by Lord Tennyson of this poem with his father's annotations. I had hoped to have reprinted these Essays, as I am now doing, in book form, before the present date, but delayed to do so, promising myself more opportunity of rehandling than I have ever found time to accomplish. When in 1906 I became Vice-Chancellor, all hope of considerable retouching in any near future entirely disappeared. I was confronted with the alternative of allowing them to wait still longer, or of reprinting them as they were, with such limited amount of revision as had been, or was now, possible. If a man could exclude from his mind all sub sequent literature and read Homer or Virgil just as the Alexandrian or Augustan scholars read them, he would simply have sacrificed life to archaeology, and his Homer, still more his Virgil, would be but a small fraction Of the full stature of the poet, which it has taken many generations of the human mind and many races of men to see in such completeness as we can see it to-day. The new then are necessary to the Old. But even less than the Old can they stand alone. That is true even Of original and creative work, which builds on the sands if it forgets that the human mind is a thing of continuous life, for which all new departures must find their root and starting-point in something already accepted. When the stage of progress which called it forth is gone by it is hardly possible for future writers to surpass that form of literature in which a nation or an era found its true expression. There is much of falsehood in the apparent truism "history repeats itself," for there are senses in which the world's history is a series of completions. The truth of this may be best realized in regard to other forms of art than the literary, because the spoken and written language which is its medium is more evidently a living growth. The twentieth century will turn back beyond the present era for its greatest models in sculpture; to the fourteenth century for its models in architecture; to the fifteenth for painting; and to the eighteenth for music. Each of these arts has a variety of forms, and each form has its own completion. Egypt and the Orient possessed the greatest temples, the noblest palaces, and the grandest tombs; but whether the expression was that of pre-Christian or Christian civilization, when the culmination of the ideal toward which each was tending was reached, progress in that special path was ended.
