Book Professional Development for Adjunct Faculty in Community Colleges

Download or read book Professional Development for Adjunct Faculty in Community Colleges written by Steady H. Moono and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adjunct faculty--part-time instructors employed for a specific purpose--comprise more than 66 percent of the total teaching faculty in community colleges. They are restricted by length of assignment and types of duties and responsibilities, and devote less time to instruction and to the activities incidental to teaching at a particular community college than their full-time counterparts. This study investigated what selected community colleges identified as professional development needs of adjunct faculty, and what adjunct faculty themselves perceived as their development needs; it also presented guidelines for an adjunct faculty professional development model for community colleges. In the fall semester of 2001, a survey was conducted among administrators and adjunct faculty hired to teach degree-objective courses in five participating community colleges in southeastern Pennsylvania. Responses indicated that adjunct faculty felt they needed more information and development activities than they received. A majority responded that a faculty-instructed, departmental program would be the most beneficial, and expressed a need for closer liaison with full-time faculty and college administration. The perceived professional development needs of adjunct faculty relative to information about instructional activities as indicated by adjunct faculty were greater than their perceived presence. This observation along with the indication that all college administrators ranked all areas on instruction as needing expansion indicated that both adjunct faculty and college administrators were not satisfied with present professional development activities related to instruction. Adjunct faculty and college administrators placed a higher emphasis on knowledge about the characteristics and educational needs of students, and responsibility assigned to adjunct as the most essential administrative professional development need of adjunct faculty. Adjunct faculty indicated that development of a closer liaision with full-time faculty and expanding and refining present program are the most important components of any future professional development program. Administrators responding to this question indicated that the key element in future program development is requiring and rewarding adjunct faculty for participation in professional development programs.

Book Hiring the Next Generation of Faculty New Directions for Community Colleges Number 152

Download or read book Hiring the Next Generation of Faculty New Directions for Community Colleges Number 152 written by Cejda and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapter in this volume presents an overview of the faculty personnel challenges facing community colleges; the next three discuss the socialization and professional development of new faculty. Authors stress the importance of understanding differences among the typs of community colleges and the importance of gender and racial/thnic diversity among the facultry of the institutions who educate the majority of undergraduate females and students of color. The volume concludes with chapters on legal aspects related to the faculty employment and the experiences of presidents and senior instructional administrators, giving valuable guidance to those actively involved in the hiring process. At the heart of this volume is the continued commitment to the community college ideal of providing educational access and, through quality instruction, facilitating student learning and success. Previous research indicated that community college faculty retire at or near the traditional age of sixty-five. With an aging faculty, enrollments that are reaching unprecedented levels, and the federal goverment calling for the community college to take an even greater role in workforce training, community colleges will need to both replace significant portions of their faculty and hire additional faculty lines between now and 2020. This next hiring wave has implications for community colleges, the diverse student populations who attend these institutions, and society in general. This is the 152nd volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Community Colleges. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.

Book Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education written by Dailey-Hebert, Amber and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the number of adjunct faculty teaching online courses remotely for their institutions continues to increase, so do the unique challenges they face, including issues of distance and isolation as well as problems pertaining to motivation, time, and compensation. Not only are these higher education faculty geographically isolated from each other and their colleagues at flagship campuses, but they also lack adequate institutional support and resources necessary to perform their roles. As institutions continue to rely heavily on this group of under-supported and undertrained instructors who teach the majority of online courses offered across the country, institutions need models and strategies to tap the expertise and perspectives of this group not only to improve teaching and learning in online programs but also to retain this critical talent pool. More consideration is needed to create institutional affinity and organizational commitment, build community, and create opportunities for remote adjunct faculty to be included as an integral component to their academic departments. The Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education is a comprehensive reference work that presents research, theoretical frameworks, instructor perspectives, and program models that highlight effective strategies, innovative approaches, and unique considerations for creating professional development opportunities for remote adjunct faculty teaching online. This book provides concrete practices that foster inclusivity among contingent faculty teaching online as well as tangible practices that have been successfully implemented from faculty developers and academic leaders at institutions who have a large population of, and heavy reliance on, remote adjunct instructors. While addressing topics that include faculty engagement, mentoring programs, and instructor resources, this book intends to support remote instructors in the post-pandemic world. It is also beneficial for faculty development professionals; academic administrative leaders; higher education stakeholders; and higher education faculty, researchers, and students.

Book Handbook of STEM Faculty Development

Download or read book Handbook of STEM Faculty Development written by Sandra M. Linder and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines face intensifying pressures in the 21st century, including multiple roles as educator, researcher, and entrepreneur. In addition to continuously increasing teaching and service expectations, faculty are engaged in substantive research that requires securing external funding, mentoring other faculty and graduate students, and disseminating this work in a broad range of scholarly outlets. Societal needs of their expertise include discovery, innovation, and workforce development. It is critical to provide STEM faculty with the professional development to support their complex roles and to base this development on evidence derived from research. This edited handbook provides STEM stakeholders with an opportunity to share studies and/or experiences that explore STEM faculty development (FD) in higher education settings. More specifically, we include work that examines faculty development planning, techniques/models, experiences, and outcomes focused on supporting the teaching, research, service, and leadership responsibilities of STEM faculty. The Handbook is suited for researchers and practitioners in STEM, STEM Education, Mathematics, Science, Technology, and Engineering disciplines. It is also suited towards faculty developers, higher education administrators, funding agencies, industry leaders, and the STEM community at large. This handbook is organized around three constructs (INPUTS, MECHANISMS, and OUTPUTS). The STEM faculty development inputs construct focuses on topics related to the characteristics of faculty members and institutions that serve as barriers or supports to the adoption and implementation of holistic STEM faculty development programs. Questions addressed in the handbook around this topic include: What barriers/supports exist for STEM faculty? How are these barriers/supports being addressed through STEM FD? How do contexts (e.g., economic, political, historical) influence faculty/administrative needs related to STEM FD? How do demographics (e.g., gender, ethnicity, age, family background) influence faculty/administrative needs related to STEM FD? The STEM faculty development mechanisms construct focuses on topics related to the actual implementation of STEM faculty development and we consider the potential models or structures of STEM faculty development that are currently in place or conceptualized in theory. Questions addressed in the handbook around this topic include: What are the processes for developing models of STEM FD? What are effective models of STEM FD? How is effectiveness determined? What roles do stakeholders (e.g., faculty, administration, consultants) play within STEM FD mechanisms? The STEM faculty development outputs construct focuses on how to best understand the influence of STEM faculty development on outcomes such as productivity, teacher quality, and identity in relation to faculty development. Questions addressed in the handbook around this topic include: How has STEM FD influenced higher education practices and settings? What are appropriate output measures and how are they used in practice? What collaborations emerge from STEM FD? How does STEM FD affect other STEM stakeholders (e.g. students, administration, business, community)? The aim for this handbook was to examine the multifaceted demands of faculty roles, and together with members of the STEM education community, envision pathways through which universities and individuals may support STEM colleagues, regardless of their experience or rank, to enjoy long and satisfying careers. Our hope is for these chapters to aid readers in deep reflection on challenges faculty face, to contemplate adaptations of models presented, and to draw inspiration for creating or engaging in new professional development programs. Chapters across this handbook highlight a variety of institutional contexts from 2-year technical colleges, to teaching-focused institutions, in addition to research-centric settings. Some chapters focus primarily on teaching and learning practices and offer models for improving STEM instruction. Others focus on barriers that emerge for STEM faculty when trying to engage in development experiences. There are chapters that examine tenure structures in relation to faculty development and how STEM FD efforts could support research endeavors. Mentorship and leadership models are also addressed along with a focus on equity issues that permeate higher education and impact STEM FD. It is our sincere hope that this Handbook sparks increased discourse and continued explorations related to STEM FD, and in particular, the intentional focus of faculty development initiatives to extend to the many facets of academic life.

Book A Program Review of the New Faculty Development Program at Delaware Technical Community College

Download or read book A Program Review of the New Faculty Development Program at Delaware Technical Community College written by Lisa Ingram Peel and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Education Leadership Portfolio (ELP) explores the New Faculty Development (NFD) program at Delaware Technical Community College. The program has undergone a series of redesigns; this study considers the evolution of the program and examines the most recent updates in the initial implementation phase. I collected data from several sources to evaluate the program’s effectiveness. To inform the problem, I considered previous data on the program, professional literature, and the program process and proposal for the most recent redesign. Additional data derive from different environments for observation including a series of face-to-face colloquia and the online learning environment through a learning management system (LMS). As a participant-observer, I drew conclusions about the alignment of this program with evidence-based practices for professional development of in-service instructors as well as standards for professional learning. I also considered the perceptions of program alumni spanning the past six years. Finally, I conducted focus groups with current participants at the end of their first semester to gauge their satisfaction with the program. ☐ While various aspects of this program are sound, I offer recommendations to administrators and program leaders to further enhance the program. First, based upon a preliminary program evaluation, I determined that data was not a central component of shaping the program content nor was it used to evaluate program effectiveness. Secondly, although the program has evolved to focus on critical content, the analysis of data reveals that the new knowledge and skills are not applied to the participants’ respective classroom and students. They are practicing skills and reviewing resources as assignments in the courses, but do not transfer the knowledge. Since this is the ultimate goal of professional development, the program designers must find more opportunity for job-embedded, authentic learning. Likewise, the concept of job-embedded learning will address other concerns participants shared such as relevance and meaningfulness of the program content and time dedicated to the content. I presented these findings to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Instruction and Technology in order to induce change and enhance the program for future semesters and participants. ☐ To maximize the program’s efficacy, given the dedication of College resources, I proposed four overarching recommendations. First, it is essential that the program leaders communicate with key stakeholders regarding the program’s latest iteration. Second, a focus on data would enhance the program. For example, the Center for Creative Instruction (CCIT) team should conduct a needs-based assessment for incoming faculty to determine their prior knowledge. The team should then consider this data when designing activities and selecting topics for colloquia. Likewise, program leaders should determine how they will measure the effectiveness of the program. Third, it is essential that participants move beyond learning about teaching to employing the techniques in their teaching. I propose a menu of job-embedded techniques based on the interactions I observed and feedback I received. Finally, by coupling data about participants and students’ needs with authentic learning, I hope to ensure enduring understandings about teaching and learning that impact student success.

Book An Analysis of Community College Developmental Education Faculty Members Perceptions of Professional Development

Download or read book An Analysis of Community College Developmental Education Faculty Members Perceptions of Professional Development written by Mary Helen Pavia Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty professional development is an essential component in the fabric of community colleges. Nationwide research studies indicate that students who begin their post-secondary studies underprepared and enrolled in developmental education are less likely to complete a college degree. Developmental education has been under reform for the past few years with the goal of accelerating students' success and transitioning them into college-level courses. Given the present state of reform, more research is needed on faculty preparation in teaching developmental education, specifically on the role of professional development in preparing faculty in developmental education. Faculty in developmental education are central to the success of students completing a degree or certificate. During this current state of reform in developmental education, professional development represents a probable solution to preparing faculty to provide condensed versions of developmental education course models. This research study examined perceptions of community college faculty in developmental education on professional development. This study utilized a qualitative case study design with the use of focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. The findings were (a) the majority of participants reported that sharing with other faculty members was beneficial and perceived the sharing of practice with like-minded individuals as a professional development activity, (b) participants' primary challenges to participating in professional development were limited funding and time away from classroom, and (c) participants expressed apprehension regarding the state of reform in developmental education. Insights from faculty on needs, challenges, and perceptions may enhance the effectiveness, timeliness, and quality of faculty development programs.

Book Managing Adjunct Faculty at Big Prairie Community College

Download or read book Managing Adjunct Faculty at Big Prairie Community College written by Lindee Reeneisen Wiltjer and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, many researchers have studied adjunct faculty and found them to be a critical component in the delivery of instructional programs at community colleges. Adjunct faculty members are held to the same standard as full time faculty; they are expected to successfully prepare and teach courses, but they are not always given the tools needed to do so. Some of these adjuncts receive a short orientation, while other receives no orientation. They are not consistently included in professional development or always provided the same tools as full-time faculty. Adjunct faculty needs are often underestimated, which translates into professional and institutional challenges. These challenges have made it more difficult to create and maintain a pool of highly qualified adjunct workforce and in some instances diminished educational experiences for students. The increasing fiscal constraints of institutions, faculty labor market factors, shifting demands for academic programs, and growing student populations suggest the use of adjunct faculty will continue to grow well into the future. As the use of adjuncts increases, so does the debate about how to successfully support and evaluate adjunct faculty members. While there is a growing number of research articles about adjunct faculty, there is not much research that specifically examines the processes used to supervise and support adjunct faculty. The orientation, hiring, and evaluation processes in place within a college impact the experiences of adjunct faculty and the overall effectiveness of an adjunct pool. Understanding faculty needs and the ways in which colleges can support adjunct can only benefit both parties and, as a result, have a positive impact on educational outcomes. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the processes used by Big Prairie Community College (BPCC) to supervise and evaluate adjunct faculty. Specifically, this study investigated how BPCC adjunct faculty perceived the way in which they were hired, oriented, and evaluated. During this study, ten adjunct faculty, two administrators, a human resources staff member and an orientation staff member were interviewed. In addition to the interviews, one orientation session was observed and document analysis was used to strengths and weaknesses in adjunct faculty management at BPCC.
