Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Propulsive . . . An absorbing look at small-town Maine and the thwarted dreams of a family trying to transcend it.”—Lee Cole, The New York Times (Editors’ Choice) “I tore through the saga of the Thatch family in two nights. The Midcoast is a reader’s dream—tense, ominous, and deeply wise.”—David Benioff, co-creator of Game of Thrones ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: CrimeReads It’s spring in the tiny town of Damariscotta, a tourist haven on the coast of Maine known for its oysters and antiques. Andrew, a high school English teacher recently returned to the area, has brought his family to Ed and Steph Thatch’s sprawling riverside estate to attend a reception for the Amherst women’s lacrosse team. Back when they were all teenagers, Andrew never could have predicted that Ed, descended from a long line of lobstermen, or Steph, a decent student until she dropped out to start a family, would ever send a daughter to a place like Amherst. But so the tides have turned, and Andrew’s trying hard to admire, more than envy, the view from Ed’s rolling backyard meadow. As Andrew wanders through the Thatches’ house, he stumbles upon a file he’s not supposed to see: photos of a torched body in a burned-out sedan. And when a line of state police cruisers crashes the Thatches’ reception an hour later, Andrew and his neighbors finally begin to see the truth behind Ed and Steph’s remarkable rise. Soon the newspapers are running headlines about the Thatches, and Andrew’s poring over his memories, trying to piece together the story of a family he thought he knew. A propulsive drama that cares as deeply about its characters as it does about the crimes they commit, The Midcoast explores the machinations of privilege, the dark recesses of the American dream, and the lies we tell as we try, at all costs, to protect the ones we love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anatomy of a First Lady speaks to the challenges and triumphs of leading ladies in corporate America, marriage, as well as in ministry. As you journey with me through a few of my personal experiences, I will utilize several parts of the human anatomy, such as the cardiovascular system, as a metaphor to transparently discuss relevant PowerPoints, such as matters of the heart. As the circulatory system’s function is to transport the blood throughout the body, women, we deal with various issues of life that cause us to silently scream simply because we are bleeding while leading. This novel offers strategies to combat blood “dis-Eases,” such as persecution, rejection, brokenness, and betrayal that try to block our flow. As the lymphatic system fights infection, leading ladies, you must understand that anything worth having won’t come easy, but you will have to fight for it. The largest organ in the human body is the skin. Leading ladies, if you are going to break glass ceilings, you have to develop a thick skin. As the bones give the body posture, I admonish women and men alike in leadership roles that challenges will come, but if you remain postured in your faith, you can conquer anything!

Book Stuck

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. James Banks Jr.
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2022-06-06
  • ISBN : 1662473281
  • Pages : 237 pages

Download or read book Stuck written by Dr. James Banks Jr. and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this time of a pandemic season and beyond, I hope to articulate a message in my book that you do not have to be stuck when you find out the root cause of your problem(s). Many situations arise because there are so many variations of sin used by the enemy to deceive people into thinking they have what they do not have. Today, not tomorrow, quit trying to please whoever it is that does not appreciate you on your job, church, school, college, team, family, relationship, or marriage. God has a door appointed for you to go through. Living in denial will delay/prohibit your mobility. Do not suppress your innermost feelings when you know you were once free, but now it feels like a trap within everyday life because of what somebody does or does not do. Life is meant to bring about trials and tribulations; however, if you can unravel the hidden truths, you are destined to be set free. Take charge and put action to your repetitive thoughts of what you constantly think about doing continually. At some point in life, you have to ask God for the revelation to say enough is enough. Otherwise, through time, you will accumulate multiple regrets which will cause you to be incarcerated from your choices. Today, please break free and move into your destiny. Do not bury yourself while you still live. Please act upon a solution, get away from denial, and make that long-awaited change that gets you away from being stuck. Hence, that level of immobility will penetrate your mind until you take action. After you conclude to take action, you will not have to look back anymore: ". . .Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord. The Lord will fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace" (Exodus 14:13a-14 KJV). Remember, sometimes, if not all the time, you must take feasible action for change. Failure to do so could result in being STUCK: Living In Denial Will Prohibit Your Mobility.

Book Turn the Ship Around

Download or read book Turn the Ship Around written by L. David Marquet and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One of the 12 best business books of all time…. Timeless principles of empowering leadership.” – USA Today "The best how-to manual anywhere for managers on delegating, training, and driving flawless execution.” —FORTUNE Since Turn the Ship Around! was published in 2013, hundreds of thousands of readers have been inspired by former Navy captain David Marquet’s true story. Many have applied his insights to their own organizations, creating workplaces where everyone takes responsibility for his or her actions, where followers grow to become leaders, and where happier teams drive dramatically better results. Marquet was a Naval Academy graduate and an experienced officer when selected for submarine command. Trained to give orders in the traditional model of “know all–tell all” leadership, he faced a new wrinkle when he was shifted to the Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered submarine. Facing the high-stress environment of a sub where there’s little margin for error, he was determined to reverse the trends he found on the Santa Fe: poor morale, poor performance, and the worst retention rate in the fleet. Almost immediately, Marquet ran into trouble when he unknowingly gave an impossible order, and his crew tried to follow it anyway. When he asked why, the answer was: “Because you told me to.” Marquet realized that while he had been trained for a different submarine, his crew had been trained to do what they were told—a deadly combination. That’s when Marquet flipped the leadership model on its head and pushed for leadership at every level. Turn the Ship Around! reveals how the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet by challenging the U.S. Navy’s traditional leader-follower approach. Struggling against his own instincts to take control, he instead achieved the vastly more powerful model of giving control to his subordinates, and creating leaders. Before long, each member of Marquet’s crew became a leader and assumed responsibility for everything he did, from clerical tasks to crucial combat decisions. The crew became completely engaged, contributing their full intellectual capacity every day. The Santa Fe set records for performance, morale, and retention. And over the next decade, a highly disproportionate number of the officers of the Santa Fe were selected to become submarine commanders. Whether you need a major change of course or just a tweak of the rudder, you can apply Marquet’s methods to turn your own ship around.

This book was released on 1997-04-15 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Second International A D Sakharov Conference on Physics, more than 200 physicists from many countries gathered together to celebrate what would have been the 75th birthday of the distinguished physicist and world figure Andrei Sakharov. This tradition had begun five years earlier, soon after his death. The conference was unique: it brought together leading scientists working in seemingly different fields, which were nevertheless among Sakharov's interests. Participants discussed the status and perspectives of research in high-energy physics, cosmology, astrophysics, classical and quantum gravity, plasma physics, nuclear physics, and extreme states of matter. The conference provided a unique opportunity for the participants to find and discuss common points of interest. The proceedings are evidence of the great variety of topics.Talks were given by distinguished physicists such as S Drell, L Okun, R Wilson, A D Linde, C W Misner, N A Popov, S L Adler, B DeWitt, M Kaku, J H Schwarz, A Zamolodchikov and E S Fradkin.
