Book The Syncretic Traditions of Islamic Religious Architecture of Kashmir Early 14th 18th Century

Download or read book The Syncretic Traditions of Islamic Religious Architecture of Kashmir Early 14th 18th Century written by Hakim Sameer Hamdani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the historical identity of Kashmir within the context of Islamic religious architecture between early fourteenth and mid-eighteenth century. It presents a framework of syncretism within which the understanding of this architectural tradition acquires new dimensions and possibilities in the region. In a first, the volume provides a detailed overview of the origin and development of Islamic sacred architecture while contextualizing it within the history of Islam in Kashmir. Covering the entirety of Muslim rule in the region, the book throws light on Islamic religious architecture introduced with the establishment of the Muslim Sultanate in the early fourteenth century, and focuses on both monumental and vernacular architecture. It examines the establishment of new styles in architecture, including ideas, materials and crafts introduced by non-Kashmiri missionaries in the late-fourteenth to fifteenth century. Further, it discusses how the Mughals viewed Kashmir and embellished the land with their architectural undertakings, coupled with encounters between Kashmir’s native culture, with its identity and influences introduced by Sufis arriving from the medieval Persianate world. The book also highlights the transition of the traditional architecture to a pan-Islamic image in the post-Independence period. With its rich illustrations, photographs and drawings, this book will interest students, researchers, and professionals in architecture studies, cultural and heritage studies, visual and art history, religion, Islamic studies and South Asian studies. It will also be useful to professional architecture institutes, public libraries, museums, cultural and heritage bodies as well as the general reader interested in the architectural and cultural history of South Asia.

This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kashur-The Kashmiri Speaking People is the out come of a dedicated research where in the author on the basis of geological, archeological, chronological and linguistic evidences has presented a truthful and unbiased account of the group she herself belongs to. She projects, and rightly so, that the Kashur from the ancient eras possessed highly developed spiritual and intellectual caliber that helped these people per se to evolve into one of the richest social, religious and literary cultural linguistic group. In this effort she has analyzed and given clarification to certain commonly held misconceptions. She explains that legends created by primitive ancestors are not myths made up as entertaining stories but are based on reality and are representations of the living truth that has been perceived by the compilers. Those interested in the rich cultural heritage of the Kashur, their architectural acumen, their proficiency in historicity, their mastery in languages, their zeal as torch bearers of various religions, and their ever-changing social order inclusive of their faults and foibles will find this book a great help and a guide. This book even records the excesses, hardships and tyrannies that the Kashur has had to face under the rule of various invaders and usurpers in their long political chronology of almost 5,000 years and the struggles they have had put in, to survive these onslaughts bravely and at times even slyly.

Download or read book Kashmir written by Chitralekha Zutshi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1947-48, when India and Pakistan fought their first war over Kashmir, it has been reduced to an endlessly disputed territory. As a result, the people of this region and its rich history are often forgotten. This short introduction untangles the complex issue of Kashmir to help readers understand not just its past, present, and future, but also the sources of the existing misconceptions about it. In lucidly written prose, the author presents a range of ways in which Kashmir has been imagined by its inhabitants and outsiders over the centuries—a sacred space, homeland, nation, secular symbol, and a zone of conflict. Kashmir thus emerges in this account as a geographic entity as well as a composite of multiple ideas and shifting boundaries that were produced in specific historical and political contexts.

Download or read book The Nation in War written by Gita Viswanath and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nation in War: A Study of Military Literature and Hindi War Cinema explores the notions of nation and nationalism as they emerge in war narratives, specifically military literature and war films in popular Hindi cinema. This book is an interesting examination of how the discourses of military literature and war films construct the subject, namely “nation”. The Indian nation faces a multi-pronged attack from neighbouring countries that seek territorial aggrandizement, the forces of liberalization (economic and cultural), and from secessionist forces within the nation. In the face of such an attack, a plethora of discourses engages seriously in constructing an idea of the Indian nation and reinforcing the notion of an Indian identity. The nation may have come into existence as a political entity in August 1947, but the nation as a cultural, social, and economic entity is constantly in the making. The Nation in War addresses concerns such as: What narrative modes are deployed to create consensus for war? How do war narratives further the statist agenda? What is the link between the war waged by the national army and that by the insurgents? How do war narratives construct women as national subjects? These questions, and more, are addressed using theoretical insights from various disciplinary positions, such as feminist, postcolonial and film studies. The book will be of interest to scholars of cultural studies, film studies, feminist studies, political science and sociology.

The essence of communication is not the way we speak, the essence of communication is we can speak the way they hear it. This book is dedicated to my children as a token of my love and concern. Though it is not possible to sum up life’s experiences in few pages, I have tried to include the challenges I have overcome and the different ways in which I have done so. Again, I know that they may experience very different challenges in life, but what I found is being truthful to yourself is the foundation which prepare you to face any challenges in your life. I hope this book will give little warmth for all children in the coldness that they may face from life.
