Download or read book The Lincoln Memorial Album Immortelles Classic Reprint written by Osborn H. Oldroyd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Memorial Album-Immortelles Ou the fifteenth day of April, 1880, I was standing near the monument of Abraham Lincoln, waiting for the Lincoln Guard of Honor to begin their first memorial service 011 the fifteenth anniversary of the death of Abraham Lincoln. The gathering was a small one, it being only about twenty-two minutes after seven o'clock in the morning. As I gazed on the pinnacle of the towering shaft, that marks the resting-place of him whom I had learned to love in my boyhood's years, when, in the spirited campaign of 1860, Old Abe was the watchword of every Republican, I fell to wondering whether it might not be possible for me to contribute my mite toward adding luster to the fame of this great product of American institutions. I had begun as early as 1860 to collect tro hies from his campaign, and had ever since then carefuiiy preserved every article I could secure that related in any way to his memory. The first thought that came into my mind, as I stood looking at that noble monument, was that of building a Memorial Hall in which to preserve the memorials I then possessed and those which I might subsequently secure, and I then and there adopted this plan. I have con tinned up to this time to gather Lincoln mementos, and have now in my possession nearly two thousand books, sermons, eulogies, poems, songs, portraits, badges, autograph letters, pins, medals, envelopes, statuettes. Book An Address in Commemoration of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book An Address in Commemoration of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln written by Harrison Hume and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address in Commemoration of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln: Delivered at the 337th Dinner of the New England Club The most unique among the great men of our country, indeed among the great of the world, i have not named. Let me call your attention for a little while to one who rose above all the men of his time; who, by his courage, his justice, his even temper, his humanity, stood an heroic figure in the center of an heroic epoch; the one providential leader, the indis pensable hero of a great drama; who was the embodi ment of the self-denial, the courage, the hope, and the nobility of a nation; whose fame will grow brighter with succeeding years; whose name will be revered in all coming time wherever men love liberty; the great central figure of our Civil war; the Eman cipator of a Race, - Abraham Lincoln. As the rising generation know little, and I fear care less, about the sufferings and heroic struggles of the men who fought the Great War for the preservation of the Union, so we, surrounded by all the comforts and luxuries of civ ilized life, and in the enjoyment of great public and private blessings, give little heed to the, self-sac rifice, courage, and patriotism of the Pioneers of the Republic, whose history is the history of our liberty. From the day the Mayflower furled her tattered sails in the harbor of Plymouth to the present time there has existed in America the pioneer spirit, caused partly by a desire for freedom and independence, and partly by that anglo-saxon lust for land which is a charac teristic of the race. Hardy and enterprising men have gone forth from the older settlements with ax and gun in hand; have entered the trackless wilderness; and upon the banks of distant rivers, laboring with difficulties, languishing perhaps from disease, and in deadly peril from a savage foe, have established new homes. The forest disappears by their sturdy arms, the school house and the church appear, law and order soon pre vail, a new State is formed, a new member enters the political family, and a new star is added to the Old Flag. Book Abraham Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel of Vermont

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel of Vermont written by Waldo F. Glover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel of Vermont: Illustrated With a Daguerreotype, Documents, and Wood-Engravings of the Period Scott stories of very recent authorship: one the product of credulity, the other the product of skepticism at its worst. It cannot justly be claimed, therefore, that the question is settled. In presenting this material concerning the pardon of the Sleeping Sentinel I have no desire to start another contro versy. At the same time, I believe that the very fact that considerable bitterness as well as prejudice entered into the late controversy on both sides should offer an excuse of some validity, at least, for a new evaluation of evidence, now that the smoke Of the battle has cleared away. Moreover, some very interesting and important material bearing on the sub jcet, which was unknown to Doctor Barton and all the other participants in the controversy, has recently been redis covered. In the sincere desire, therefore, to bring order out of chaos and to determine whether perchance there may be two grains of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff, I propose to examine the question from every possible point of view. To this end I shall present all available source material, call attention to the leading versions of the pardon story, and re view the late controversy in its various phases. In brief, I propose to examine everything and suppress nothing which tends to throw light on the subject.
