Book excerpt: A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO EDUCATE, ENCOURAGE, AND INSPIRE All of us can recall a certain teacher--a very special someone--who inspired us to learn. This person is usually a school teacher, but may also be a coach, mentor, parent or friend. Teachers come in many shapes and sizes, but what is it that makes one great? This book gives many answers to this question, from many sources. It includes quotes from famous thinkers, leaders and speakers, as well as letters from little known--yet highly insightful--students and teachers. You will find these comments fun, inspirational and even powerful! This tribute to and for teachers celebrates the special, and often heroic, role they play in their students' lives. Teachers work for love, not money. Yet they often receive too little reimbursement in the form of our gratitude. "Teachers are Special" is created as a simple way of saying "Thank you" to our most inspiring teachers. Offer it as a gift to a special educator, or read it to remind yourself of the value of learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She was a writer of romance and a gentle singer of Celtic music; he was a rock star. He had lived for years in the seamy world of L.A. rock and roll; she had grown up in the shelter of the mountains of Idaho. She was young and lovely; he still turned heads with his long hair and good looks even though he was old enough to be her father. He had a daughter who wouldn't stand for another woman in his life; she shied away from the predatory men she met in this business. Could they possibly have any less in common or more strikes against them? Well, for Marian, the greatest impediment was that he was married. Thrown together on a concert tour, the attraction between them was impossible to ignore as they both remembered an encounter two years earlier when she had been in over her head and he had rescued her from a harrowing situation and neither of them had been able to forget it. Slowly he reached out to her again, and slowly she learned to trust, until she found herself Loving Andy. But even though love can be profound, obstacles can be also. And sometimes, they can seem insurmountable. Sometimes choices must be made, and sometimes . . . love is not enough. But when love is real, when the heart is steadfast, can love overcome in the end?

Book Great South African Teachers

Download or read book Great South African Teachers written by Jonathan D. Jansen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when newspapers are full of the woes of the South African education system and stories of teachers who let the children in their classes down, this book shows that this is not the whole picture; it is a celebration of heroic teachers who have struggled against great odds to give their students a chance of success. Great South African Teachers celebrates the massive contribution of remarkable teachers, both past and present, working in South African schools. The stories, sent in by over 100 South Africans in response to advertisements placed in the Sunday Times, pay tribute to teachers who have changed lives through their passion for their subject, their dedication to the dignity of the teaching profession, and above all their determination to see the children in their classes succeed. The contributions reflect the full range of South African schools -- rich schools, poor schools, white schools under apartheid, black schools under apartheid, urban schools and rural schools, schools today and schools in the past. And the contributors come from varied backgrounds: privileged children exposed to the realities of apartheid South Africa through their teachers, poor children motivated to work to break the bonds of poverty, angry children and shy children, bright children stretched to achieve their full potential and others taught the value of hard work in the pursuit of success. Jonathan Jansen, assisted by Lihlumelo Toyana and Nangamso Koza, introduces the collection of contributions with a thought-provoking commentary on the lessons to be learnt from the tributes. Jansen identifies seven types of inspiring teacher, showing how each type works differently to bring out the best in the children in their charge. Great South African Teachers thanks our inspiring teachers and hopes to motivate the next generation of teachers to dedicate themselves to changing lives, to changing the future. All the royalties from this book go towards pre-service teacher bursaries at universities in South Africa. The first recipient of a bursary funded by the royalties from this book is currently studying for his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of the Free State. He will be the first graduate in his family.

Book Rupture and Reconstruction

Download or read book Rupture and Reconstruction written by Haym Soloveitchik and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essay that forms the core of this book is an attempt to understand the developments that have occurred in Orthodox Jewry in America in the last seventy years, and to analyse their implications. The prime change is what is often described as ‘the swing to the right’, a marked increase in ritual stringency, a rupture in patterns of behaviour that has had major consequences not only for Jewish society but also for the nature of Jewish spirituality. For Haym Soloveitchik, the key feature at the root of this change is that, as a result of migration to the ‘New Worlds’ of England, the US, and Israel and acculturation to its new surroundings, American Jewry—indeed, much of the Jewish world— had to reconstruct religious practice from normative texts: observance could no longer be transmitted mimetically, on the basis of practices observed in home and street. In consequence, behaviour once governed by habit is now governed by rule. This new edition allows the author to deal with criticisms raised since the essay, long established as a classic in the field, was originally published, and enables readers to gain a fuller perspective on a topic central to today’s Jewish world and its development.

Book Learning on Other People s Kids

Download or read book Learning on Other People s Kids written by Barbara Torre Veltri and published by IAP. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work captures the voices of TFA novices who offer candid accounts of their experiences in Becoming Teach For America Teachers. Previously unanswered questions are addressed: Why do recent college graduates apply to Teach For America? How are they recruited, trained, and hired? How do they learn the culture (s) of the community, schools, grade level, curriculum, and children they teach? Is there a “culture” of the TFA organization? What recommendations do they offer to TFA donors, policy-makers, future corps members and the public? Woven into this book, are perspectives from mentors who worked alongside TFAers, administrators who hired them, corporate C.E.O.’s who supported them, and policies (both local and national) that privileged TFA over non-TFA teachers. Finally, a compelling series of eyewitness narratives introduces each chapter’s theme, documented from the author’s own, “Notes from the Field.” These accounts offer rich, descriptive vignettes that present the challenges TFAers faced, as they occurred. Schools reflect the multitiered and often non-level playing field that comprises America’s educational landscape. Learning on Other People’s Kids: Becoming a Teach For America Teacher provides readers a glimpse into the corps member experience in a rare ethnographic account.
