Book Probatio Latina

Download or read book Probatio Latina written by Charles D. Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Probatio Latina: A Series of Questions Designed to Test the Progress of Learners in the Latin Language This little book has been prepared mainly with the purpose of furnishing Teachers the means of readily testing the progress of their pupils in Latin. I presume it will be generally admitted that this can be better done, at least as regards exactness and breadth, by the examination of answers given in writing to printed questions, than by any sort of oral recitation. But, moreover, I feel convinced from my own experience that an examination of this kind operates most powerfully on the mental growth of the learner. It reveals to himself his short-comings, with a clearness equaled by nothing else in his school-work, and it forces him to form the habit of bracing his powers to attack, often with success, questions which at first seem wholly beyond his grasp. I am not acquainted with any book which is constructed exactly on the plan here adopted. There are some books which contain questions adapted to the course of particular grammars, and others again which are made up of a collection of papers actually proposed in different school or college examinations. The adoption of the former plan seemed likely to restrict materially the usefulness of the book, where so many different grammars are in use; and the latter would involve the necessity of repeating again and again questions on the same topic, and would thereby cause the book to reach an unwieldy size if it should aim at anything like completeness. Book Major Latin Declensions Conjugations Syntax

Download or read book Major Latin Declensions Conjugations Syntax written by John Evans Forsythe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Major Latin, Declensions, Conjugations, Syntax: Roman Customs; For High Schools and Preparatory Schools The Topics and Paradigms, transplanted and enlarged from Book I, preserve their natural visualization, and save time for the student and for the teacher. The broader horizon and the fuller understanding of the content of Roman life will bring increased pleasure to the reader. The Eight Parts of Speech form the framework of the whole study; and words are grouped throughout accordingly. Phrases and sentences illustrating the paradigms are provided abundantly; yet new sentences should be supplied in addition at the discretion of instructors as special needs require. Each Vocabulary presents a picture of its own. The double-column pages give opportunity of showing the two sides of a subject; for example, the substantive and the adjective properties of a Pronoun. The Verb is introduced gradually, but finally is completely summarized in Paradigm form. The treatment of Syntax provides for the reading of any representative Latin author in prepa ration for college. But the pupil himself is the main object in hand; it is not so much a work about Latin as a work in Latin, an endeavor to present the Roman point of View in the Roman manner to his advantage. By this method Secondary Latin becomes a progressive pleasure rather than a meaningless toil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A New Second Latin Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Second Latin Book Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Beeson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Second Latin Book But the right of Caesar to occupy not alone the center of the stage but the whole stage as well, in the second year of Latin study, has been justly and successfully challenged. During the last few years a very general call has been heard for an easier, better graded, richer second year program in Latin than the study of Caesar alone affords. Not only have secondary teachers urged this change, but college professors and administrative officers have generally approved the plan, and accepted this more varied program in lieu of their long established requirements in Caesar. The Second Latin Book which is herewith presented to the public, is intended to meet this need. It makes no pro fessions of originality so far as the plan is concerned of presenting selections from other authors supplementary 'to Caesar. Its reason for existence lies in the consistent work ing out of this plan: in the attempt to make the work of this most critical period in the study of Latin so attractive that the student will be drawn on by a real pleasure in the work itself; so well-graded, that he will never find it hope lessly beyond his powers; so varied, that he will never lose interest through the monotony of his task. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On The Latin Language, Vol. 2 of 2: With An English Translation; Books VIII.-X., Fragments I. Speech is naturally divided into three parts, as I have shown in the previous books its first part is how names were imposed upon things its second, in what way the derivatives of these names have arrived at their differences its third, how the words, when united with one another reasoningly, express an idea. Having set forth the first part, I shall from here begin upon the second. As every ofishmt is secondary by nature, because that vertical trunk from which it comes is primary, and it is therefore declined: so there is declension in words: homo man is the vertical, hominis man's is the oblique, because it is declined from the vertical. Book Latin Syllabus for the Freshman Year

Download or read book Latin Syllabus for the Freshman Year written by Francis A. Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Syllabus for the Freshman Year: Prepared for the Students in the University of Pennsylvania, 1871-72 The following syllabus has been prepared, as is stated in the title, for the use of the students in the University of Pennsylvania. It consists of three parts, The Rules for Translating, ' An Argument with Explanatory Notes' to the selections from Livy and Homes usually read in the Freshman year, and such Rules of Syntax as are required for reference, either in these notes or, generally, in the Latin instruction of the whole course. I have always thought it best, in teaching, to rely mainly upon oral (i mean catechetz'cal) instruction, but have, nevertheless, been in the habit of printing, as occasion required, a few pages of rules or explanations, whenever it seemed to me that I could thereby economize the time or make my meaning more clear. The matter, thus constantly accumulating, I at various times corrected and modified, arranged and re-arranged, and, under the name of the 'latin Syllabus', have reprinted it, in different years, for the Freshman classes. I have now carefully revised it all, made large additions, and, at last, brought it into a form suited, as I suppose, to the wants of the present class, and needing (i hope) only slight changes for several years to come. A statement of the circum stances which lcd to the preparation of the several parts, will help, also, to explain the end I had in view in each particular case. Many of the students came to us indifi'erently prepared; and although there were also many, who, in completing the required course of reading, had been well grounded in the elements of the Latin Grammar, and well trained in the construing of Latin sentences, yet it was evident, that, if they were to work together, they must have some systematic teaching in the methods of rendering Latin into English, something which should reconcile and harmonize the various styles that they had learned, which should make the free, or rather loose, translator more exact, the literal translator more idiomatic, and the happy (or unhappy) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sequence of Tenses in Latin: Read at the Meeting of the American Philological Association Held at Ithaca, July 1886 The doctrine Of the Sequence Of Tenses has two sides, a theoretical and a pedagogical. It is the purpose Of the present and the succeeding paper to examine it with some fullness on the former side, and briefly on the latter. Book An Introduction to Latin Textual Emendation

Download or read book An Introduction to Latin Textual Emendation written by W. M. Lindsay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Latin d104ual Emendation: Based on the d104 of Plautus These chapters, expanded from a recent course of Oxford lectures, will, I hope, do something to supply what I believe to be a real want. d104ual emendation too often misses the mark through want of knowledge of what may be called "the rules of the game." Too often it seems as if the only resource that were known for emending a corrupt passage were to rewrite the sentence in capitals, with no division between the words, and then to look out for letters which may have been confused with others of similar form. The confusion of letters in minuscule script and the confusion of contractions, especially minuscule contractions, played an important part in the corruption of texts, but are seldom recognised to a corresponding extent in our attempts at emendation. All this I believe to be due to the absence of a satisfactory handbook on the subject. For Greek we have the excellent Commentatio Palaeographica of Bast - a book not so widely known, I fear, in this country as it deserves to be.
