Book A Treatise on Political Economy

Download or read book A Treatise on Political Economy written by Antoine Louis Claude Destutt de Tracy (conde) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Treatise on Political Economy"by Antonie Louis Claude Destutt de Tracy (1754-1836) is a foundational text of nineteenth-century, free-market economic thought and remains one of the classics of nineteenth-century French economic liberalism. Destutt de Tracy was one of the founders of the classical liberal republican group known as the Ideologues, which included Benjamin Constant, Jean-Baptiste Say, Marquis de Condorcet, and Madame de Stael. In this volume, Destutt de Tracy provides one of the clearest statements of the economic principles of the Ideologues. Breaking with the physiocratic orthodoxy of the eighteenth century, Destutt de Tracy denies that land is the source of all productive labor and focuses his attention upon manufacturing and manufacturers as the producers of utility and, therefore, of value and of wealth. Placing the entrepreneur at the center of his view of economic activty, he argues against luxurious consumption of the idle rich and recommends a market economy with low taxation and minimum state intervention.Destutt de Tracy sent the text of "A Treatise on Political Economy "to Thomas Jefferson in hopes of securing its translation in the United States. It was met with enthusiastic approval. Jefferson wrote to the publisher, "The merit of this work will, I hope, place it in the hands of every reader in our country." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KARL MARX says, "An accumulation of wealth at one pole of society indicates an accumulation of misery and overwork at the other."[1] In this assertion, Marx avoids the very common and mischievous fallacy of confusing causes, consequences, and symptoms. He suggests that what is found at one pole indicates, or is a symptom of what may be found at the other. In the development of his criticisms on political economy and the existing organization of society, however, Marx proceeds as if there were a relation of cause and effect in the proposition just quoted, and his followers and popularizers have assumed as an indisputable postulate that the wealth of some is a cause of the poverty of others. The question of priority or originality as between Marx, Rodbertus, and others is at best one of vanity between them and their disciples,[2]but it is of great interest and importance to notice that the doctrine that wealth at one pole makes misery at the other is the correct logical form of the notion that progress and poverty are correlative. This doctrine rests upon another and still more fundamental one, which is not often formulated, but which can be detected in most of the current socialistic discussions, viz., that all the capital which is here now would be here under any laws or institutions about property, as if it were due to some independent cause; and that some have got ahead of others and seized upon the most of it, so that those who came later have not been able to get any. If this notion about the source of capital is not true, then wealth at one pole cannot cause poverty at the other. If it is true, then we can make any regulations we like about the distribution of wealth, without fear lest the measures which we adopt may prevent any wealth from being produced. In Rome, under the empire, wealth at one pole was a symptom of misery at the other, because Rome was not an industrial state. Its income came from plunder. The wealth had a source independent of the production of the society of Rome. That part of the booty which some got, others could not have. No such thing is true of an industrial society. The wealth of the commercial cities of Italy and southern Germany, in the Middle Ages, was largely in the hands of merchant-princes. If one were told that some of these merchants were very rich, he would have no ground of inference that others in those cities must have been poor. The rich were those who developed the opportunities of commerce which were, in the first instance, open to all. What they gained came out of nothing which anybody else ever had or would have had.

Book Economics in One Lesson

Download or read book Economics in One Lesson written by Henry Hazlitt and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, Economics in One Lesson is an essential guide to the basics of economic theory. A fundamental influence on modern libertarianism, Hazlitt defends capitalism and the free market from economic myths that persist to this day. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the “Austrian School,” which includes Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich (F.A.) Hayek, and others, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Hazlitt wrote Economics in One Lesson, his seminal work, in 1946. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy which occurred more than 50 years after the initial publication of Economics in One Lesson. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong — and strongly reasoned — anti-deficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.

Book The Wheel of Wealth

Download or read book The Wheel of Wealth written by John Beattie Crozier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheel of Wealth: Being a Reconstruction of the Science and Art of Political Economy on the Lines of Modern Evolution In the ordinary way this volume would not have required a preface, as the title-page speaks for itself, but a word or two is due to the reader in explanation of its disconnection from the series to which it naturally belongs. Originally I had intended to issue the whole of my works under the general title of the 'History of Intellectual Development,' but I have been warned by my literary advisers that in doing so I should seriously prejudice their reception by the public, inasmuch as the common title given to each volume in succession was calculated to give the impression that no one volume could be read with full appreciation and understanding without a knowledge of those which had preceded it; and besides, that the subjects with which I had dealt in Vol. III. being almost entirely problems of Politics and Society could not properly be said to fall under the designation of a History of Intellectual Development. Now, when I projected this series, over a quarter of a century ago, what I proposed to myself was, to treat the subject-matter of each volume as a 'specialism,' and to keep each quite independent of every other, except in so far as all alike would be written from the new standpoint, which under the title of 'A New Organon' I had explained at length in my first volume, 'Civilization and Progress,' and which was to be the keynote as it were of the whole. I have therefore decided to issue this volume simply as an independent treatise on Political Economy, although I wish it to be understood that it comes in its natural place in the series as originally projected. Book The Wheel of Wealth

Download or read book The Wheel of Wealth written by John Beattie Crozier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheel of Wealth: Being a Reconstruction of the Science and Art of Political Economy on the Lines of Modern Evolution Mathematical, Physical, and Biological Sciences, where the general orders under which they march have already been given them by men like Bacon, Newton, and Darwin, but in the Human Sciences as well, such as Psychology, Philosophy, Religion, History, Ethics, Political Economy, etc., where up to the present - in so far as any general principles common to them all are concerned, - all is chaos. If then we take Political Economy, which is a recognised 'specialism, ' as a test-case, we find that the Academical Economists claim that in all its general principles, its laws, and its deductions, - if not in all its special details, - it is practically a complete and perfected Science. In this volume, on the contrary, I shall attempt to show that having had the Science in their own hands for a century or more, literally not one of their fundamental propositions or deductions is true, and that most of their practical conclusions are false; and in order that the matter may not be left hanging in the vague, I have made a first rough attempt at a reconstruction of their Science, on other principles and other methods, - all of which principles I have drawn simply from the standpoint of the 'general thinker who has to keep his finger on the pulse, as it were, of the Human Sciences in their combination and correlation, if he is to see into the true inner workings of any one of them. Book Researches Into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth

Download or read book Researches Into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth written by Antoine Augustin Cournot and published by Theclassics.Us. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII OF VARIATIONS IN THE SOCIAL INCOME, RESULTING FROM THE COMMUNICATION OF MARKETS 87. In Chapter X we investigated the effects of the communication of markets on the determination of prices and the incomes of producers; we now mean to take up, according to the same principles which underlay the theory developed in the preceding chapter, how communication, how commerce between two markets, or, if it is preferred, the exportation of commodities from one market to another, causes the value of the social income to vary, as well in the importing as in the exporting market. This question derives an especially strong interest when commercial relations between different peoples are considered, as being essentially subject to the regulating action of governments. For the term social income there may then be substituted national income, which, however, will not denote the income which the government of a nation derives from taxation, and which serves to pay public expenses, but the sum total of individual incomes, of rents, of profits, and of wages of every kind, in the whole extent of the national territory. Here we are evidently approaching the question, with a view to which all systems of political economy have, so to speak, been constructed; the question which for two centuries has been discussed by theorists and by statesmen. We have not the temerity to approach it from the statesman's standpoint; but, on the other hand, we believe that this question, when considered in its theoretical aspect, can be reduced to very simple terms, of which the mere statement, by overthrowing false systems, opens the way to the practical knowledge which essentially concerns the destiny of nations. It is on this account that the considerations which we...
