Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 1216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Book Addressing the Climate in Modern Age s Construction History

Download or read book Addressing the Climate in Modern Age s Construction History written by Carlo Manfredi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on environmental control in buildings from the 17th century onwards. Even before building services became a hallmark of buildings, in order to address increasing sanitary and comfort needs, pioneering experiences had contributed to improve design skills of professionals. After long being determined by passive features, indoor climate became influenced by installations and plants, representing the most significant shift of paradigm in the modern age’s construction history. This change was not without consequences, and the book presents contributions showing the deep connection between architectural design, comfort requirements and environmental awareness throughout the 19th century. Taking into account the differences between different European countries, the book is a valuable resource for architects, designers and heritage professionals who are interested in environmental design, enabling them to develop a deeper knowledge of heritage in order to address to climate demands, particularly going towards a future in which energy savings and fuel consumption reduction will dictate our behaviour. It includes contributions by leading international experts: Melanie Bauernfeind, Marco Cofani, Lino Vittorio Bozzetto, Emmanuelle Gallo, Alberto Grimoldi, Dean Hawkes, Angelo Giuseppe Landi, Mattias Legnér, Oriel Prizeman, and Henrik Schoenefeldt.

Book Mark J Millard Architectural Collection 02 British Books

Download or read book Mark J Millard Architectural Collection 02 British Books written by National Gallery of Art (U.S.) and published by George Braziller Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Books is the second book in the series cataloguing more than six hundred rare illustrated books and bound series of prints on western European architecture, design, and topography, collected by the late Mark J. Millard. Among the books, all published between the end of the fifteenth and the middle of the nineteenth centuries, are numerous first or early editions. The almost one hundred titles catalogued in British Books trace the origins and development of architectural illustration in Britain. The collection is particularly rich in the eighteenth century, and includes almost all of the great folio albums recording the archaeological investigations of antiquity and most of the volumes documenting the architecture of Britain. These books, intended for the gentleman-amateur's library rather than the architect's office or builder's workshop, reveal the British sensitivity concerning properly architectural representation of buildings. Here, too, are practical treatises for construction, ornament patterns, surveys of monuments, views of buildings in situ, and topographical surveys. Included are works by Thomas Chippendale, John Neale, Humphry Repton, and Sir Christopher Wren.

Book A Philosophy of Software Design

Download or read book A Philosophy of Software Design written by John K. Ousterhout and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book addresses the topic of software design: how to decompose complex software systems into modules (such as classes and methods) that can be implemented relatively independently. The book first introduces the fundamental problem in software design, which is managing complexity. It then discusses philosophical issues about how to approach the software design process and it presents a collection of design principles to apply during software design. The book also introduces a set of red flags that identify design problems. You can apply the ideas in this book to minimize the complexity of large software systems, so that you can write software more quickly and cheaply."--Amazon.
