Book A Treasury of Tom Thomson

Download or read book A Treasury of Tom Thomson written by Joan Murray and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Thomson's most influential paintings as chosen by his friends and collectors, illustrating a moving, untold story in Canadian art. In spring 1918, Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald, two members of the soon-to-be-formed Group of Seven, met in the Studio Building in Toronto. Their friend Tom Thomson had died the year before, and they determined to establish him as one of Canada's great artists. Most of his paintings and sketches were stacked up in the studio. They would select the best, mark their comments on the back of these works and make sure they got into Canada's most prestigious public and private collections. These two great artists had been Thomson's mentors and friends, teaching him about current art movements and coaching him in painting techniques. The pupil would become the master -- and Harris and MacDonald, together with A.Y. Jackson, wanted to be sure that he would be recognized and remembered. Art historian Joan Murray has constructed a beautiful, intimate treasury of Thomson's "best paintings," as chosen by these artist friends and later major collectors, and has written an insightful commentary on each one. Knowing the story that lies behind Thomson's great works helps us to view these paintings with new insight and appreciation. We understand what makes these works special. A Treasury of Tom Thomson was published with two different covers to highlight the range of Tom Thomson's work.

Book excerpt: A stunning new edition of the Canadian classic with never-before-seen paintings First published in 1977 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of a Canadian painter whose brief, brilliant life, and untimely death in a mysterious canoe accident, gained him mythic status in his homeland, Tom Thomson: The Silence and the Storm quickly attained legendary status in its own right. This newly designed and expanded edition revives a classic and adds more than 25 never-before-seen paintings and a new introduction. Co-authors Harold Town, a founder of the Painters Eleven and an icon of Canadian art himself, and art historian David P. Silcox, former head of Sotheby's Canadian division, celebrate this early associate of the Group of Seven as a key creative figure without falling into the trap of cultural jingoism. Thomson, the authors maintain, was an inspired regional painter—in the best sense of that term—who stumbled upon the bold Expressionist palette pioneered by Matisse and his contemporaries despite working from a provincial backwater. Thomson's finest works are reproduced here in painstakingly colour-matched plates, including more than 80 of Thomson's famous oil sketches in exactly their original size.

Book Tom Thomson

Download or read book Tom Thomson written by Joan Murray and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1998-10 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Art in the Twentieth Century is a survey of the richest, most controversial and perhaps most thoroughly confusing centuries in the whole history of the visual arts in Canada - the period from 1900 to the present. Murray shows how, beginning with Tonalism at the start of the century, new directions in art emerged - starting with our early Modernists, among them Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven. Today, Modernism has lost its dominance. Artists, critics, and the public alike are confronted by a scene of unprecedented variety and complexity. Murray discusses the social and political events of the century in combination with the cultural context; movements, ideas, attitudes, and styles; the important groups in Canadian art, and major and minor artists and their works. Fully documented, well researched and written with clarity and over four hundred illustrations in both black-and-white and colour, Murray's book is essential for understanding Canadian art of this century. As an introduction, it is excellent in both its scope and intelligence.

Book excerpt: Farley Mowat's outrageous memoir begins with his unlikely conception in a canoe and continues to his boyhood fascination with creatures of the natural world and on to his youthful rambles and adventures. To his immense pleasure and his parents' dismay, he adopted various beasts (whom he affectionately calls "The Others") as roommates. In this boyhood memoir, he recounts the exploits of this second family, who have been the subjects of many of his beloved books for young readers. This is the tale of a mischievous, immensely gifted young naturalist, recounted with the wisdom, humor and grown-up perspective of a very talented writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's description: Emily Carr (1871-1945) was an extraordinary Canadian artist and writer. She is now a national cultural icon and is considered one of the great artists of the Americas. She found inspiration for her paintings in the lush and towering rain forests of the British Columbia coast and in the compelling totem poles that stood in Native villages. This book is based on a special cache of small drawing books that offer a direct connection with Carr's hand, eye, and mind. Spanning the years 1927 to 1930, at a turning point in her life when she was in her mid-fifties, these sketches record seven significant journeys - to isolated Native villages in coastal British Columbia and to eastern Canada to meet fellow artists in the Group of Seven. Two of the journeys were metaphorical - to abstraction and to nature itself - but both were an intrinsic part of all the others, as well as a part of the process of developing the powerful painting style that is uniquely hers. Doris Shadbolt presents a selection of more than 80 of Carr's drawings. Her text, animated by quotations from previously unpublished writings by Carr, takes us along on these journeys, echoing the intimacy and immediacy of the drawings themselves.
