It shows how Catholicism is apparently flourishing, with good attendance at Sunday Masses, impressive religious processions and flourishing charismatic groups, and with interventions by the Catholic hierarchy in national and local politics. However, focusing in particular on the beliefs and practices of young people, the book shows that young people are often adopting a different, more individualised approach to Catholicism, which is frequently out of step with the official position. It considers the features of this: a more personal and experiential relationship with God; a new approach to morality, in which right living is seen as more important than right believing; and a critical view of what is seen as the Catholic hierarchy's misguidedness. The book argues that this reinterpreting of religion by young people has the potential to alter fundamentally the nature of Catholicism in the Philippines, but that, nevertheless, young people's new approach involves a solid, enduring commitment and a strong view of their own Catholic, religious identity.

The book investigates the sociocultural, political, and economic contexts of El Shaddai's popularity among the Filipino urban poor and aspiring middle classes and explores its significance for its followers, which reaches well beyond promises of appliances, salary raises, jobs abroad, and healing. Katharine Wiegele argues that Shaddai's theology directly engages and affirms desires for the material signs of modernity in ways that the mainstream Philippine Roman Catholic Church and Filipino leftist movements do not. At stake for its many adherents are their place and identity within the broader society; the meaning of their experiences of poverty, suffering, and oppression; and the relevance of their very notions of God, Christian community, and Christian life. Wiegele evocatively captures the religious and everyday experiences of her informants' lives in poor squatter neighborhoods of Manila. She is particularly sensitive to El Shaddai's delicate and often contorted relationship with the Catholic Church, which accepts the movement reluctantly, fearful of losing the loyalty of millions of faithful Catholics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influx of immigrants post-1965 has increased religious diversity in the United States, offsetting secularization trends. In particular, several immigrant groups originate from countries characterized by high levels of religiosity, and their new minority status in a religiously diverse environment prompts intentional religious transmission as they become parents. However, second- generation immigrants exhibit higher levels of religious disaffiliation than their parents.This qualitative exploratory study investigates possible motives for this phenomenon among Catholic Filipino-Americans using a modified version of the 'Big Four' religious dimensions. Analysis of data acquired through in-depth interviews of nineteen Filipino-American young adults revealed that religious socialization among Filipino-Americans is characterized by high emphasis on the emotional and social dimensions and an underemphasis of the cognitive dimension, making current practice less likely despite continued religious affiliation. However, results also showed that current practice is still possible when exposure to different modalities of Catholicism in transitional life stages, e.g. high school and college, occurs, supplementing the underemphasis of the cognitive dimension in early childhood. Finally, results revealed high correlation between current non-practice, negative family dynamics in childhood, and poor mental health, highlighting the need for further research clarifying these relationships to improve psychological well-being among immigrant families.
