Book Translating Tenses in Arabic English and English Arabic Contexts

Download or read book Translating Tenses in Arabic English and English Arabic Contexts written by Hassan Abdel-Shafik Hassan Gadalla and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the translation of Arabic tenses into English, and English tenses into Arabic. Using a corpus of 1,605 examples, it is remarkably exhaustive in its treatment of the categories and forms of both Standard Arabic and English tenses. As such, it represents a useful reference for translators and linguistics researchers. With 260 example sentences and their translations, the book will be very beneficial to teachers and students of Arabic-English and English-Arabic translation. The book is divided into eight chapters. The first presents the variety of Arabic that will be studied and explains why translation should be a text-oriented process. Chapter Two deals with the differences between tense and aspect in Arabic and English, respectively. Chapter Three proposes a model for translating Standard Arabic perfect verbs into English based on their contextual references. The fourth chapter shows the contextual clues that can assist a translator in selecting the proper English equivalents of Arabic imperfect verbs. Chapter Five deals with the translation of Arabic active participles into English. Translating Arabic passive participles into English is handled in Chapter Six. The seventh chapter tackles the translation of English simple and progressive tenses into Arabic. Chapter Eight provides an approach to the translation of English perfect and perfect progressive tenses into Standard Arabic.

Book excerpt: If John Lennon, Gertrude Stein, Stephen Hawking, and Mother Goose had conspired to write a grammar book, GRAM-O-RAMA would be it. Designed for word-lovers and students in the classroom, this textbook contains dozens of unconventional exercises geared toward learning grammar. Its interactive method offers students and teachers a smart and accessible approach by encouraging writers to experiment with grammatical functions, style, rhythm, and sound. "Beware, GRAM-O-RAMA is a dangerous book. It takes the cautions and rules of grammar and drops them into a fun house. I experienced many of these exercises in Daphne's class and still find myself relying on their lessons today. You could make a movie of this book. Or at least a theme park ride!" -Dave Krinsky, executive producer of TV series, King of the Hill and screenwriter for Blades of Glory "Daphne Athas sets words ablaze and puts sentences in flight. Every student and every teacher, every writer and every editor, could benefit from her visionary eye and musical ear." -Alane Salierno Mason, senior editor, W. W. Norton & Company, founding editor of www.wordswithoutborders.org "This book is not only charming and amusing, but profound in the way it forces the reader to see our language afresh, as something alive and throbbing with possibilities. Indispensable reading." -Randall Kenan , associate professor of English, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, author of A Visitation of Spirits "Not your grandma's grammar, these irresistible exercises prod and provoke, delight and inspire. They rattle students (and teachers) out of boredom, apathy, and fear and awaken them to the power and possibilities of language." -Elizabeth Moose, instructor of English, North Carolina School of Science and Math

Book Tense in English

Download or read book Tense in English written by Renaat Declerck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this book looks at tense in English, one of the most controversial areas of grammar. Prior to the book’s original publication, the problems and interest in the subject had led to an impressive number of books and articles. Yet, despite the amount of work produced, nothing approaching a consensus had emerged, merely a series of conflicting theories and analyses. Here, Renaat Declerck provides a framework for a theoretical instrument which will enable the linguist to interpret the data correctly. The book is primarily theoretical in nature, but offers descriptive theory and a discussion of the various tenses which will make it a valuable tool for those teaching English. Theoretical and applied linguists will find this an important contribution to the debate on tense and a worthy starting point for future research. The book is not written from the viewpoint of any particular linguistic theory and does not presuppose any knowledge of tense theory, it is a readable and reliable guide to the area.

Book English Algorithmic Grammar

Download or read book English Algorithmic Grammar written by Hristo Georgiev and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-11-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate goal of Computational Linguistics is to teach the computer to understand Natural Language. This research monograph presents a description of English according to algorithms which can be programmed into a computer to analyse natural language texts. The algorithmic approach uses series of instructions, written in Natural Language and organised in flow charts, with the aim of analysing certain aspects of the grammar of a sentence. One problem with text processing is the difficulty in distinguishing word forms that belong to parts of speech taken out of context. In order to solve this problem, Hristo Georgiev starts with the assumption that every word is either a verb or a non-verb. From here he presents an algorithm which allows the computer to recognise parts of speech which to a human would be obvious though the meaning of the words. Emphasis for a computer is placed on verbs, nouns, participles and adjectives. English Algorithmic Grammar presents information for computers to recognise tenses, syntax, parsing, reference, and clauses. The final chapters of the book examine the further applications of an algorithmic approach to English grammar, and suggests ways in which the computer can be programmed to recognise meaning. This is an innovative, cutting-edge approach to computational linguistics that will be essential reading for academics researching computational linguistics, machine translation and natural language processing.
