Book Vortex Induced Rolling Moments on Cruciform Missiles at High Angle of Attack

This book was released on 1971 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of predicting the induced roll phenomena associated with finned missiles at high angles of attack has been approached by examining the interaction between the body wake vortex system and the finned surfaces of the missile. The application of the classic Blasius moment integral to this problem permits the independent evaluation of each singularity in the flow field which may contribute to the moments. This method is applicable to missiles employing fin schemes of any geometry and is used herein to analyze the induced roll of a typical cruciform missile configuration. A computer program has been developed to generate numerical solutions utilizing those parameters which affect the magnitude and direction of the induced roll. (Author).

Book Vortex Induced Rolling Moments on Finned Missiles at High Angle of Attack

Download or read book Vortex Induced Rolling Moments on Finned Missiles at High Angle of Attack written by Daniel G. Udelson and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous analytical studies endeavoring to account for vortex induced rolling moments on missiles have not successfully correlated with experimental results. This points up the need for a theoretically more sophisticated treatment, which the present work attempts to satisfy. A model for the two dimensional cross flow past the tail body combination is employed and the Blasius complex contour integral used to find the moments. The final result contained herein presents the complete mathematical solution for the two dimensional ideal flow past a planar tail body combination. It is in closed analytic form with the exception of one definite integral which has been reduced to a form suitable for numerical calculation. All terms of the solution (integrated as well as the integral) are best calculated for various values of the parameters on a large scale digital computer.

Book Boundary Layer Effects

Download or read book Boundary Layer Effects written by Anthony W. Fiore and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975 the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Republic of Germany signed a Data Exchange Agreement numbered AF-75-G-7440 entitled 'Viscous and Interacting Flow Fields.' The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.

Book Flowfield Measurements in the Vortex Wake of a Missile at High Angle of Attack in Turbulence

Download or read book Flowfield Measurements in the Vortex Wake of a Missile at High Angle of Attack in Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flowfield downstream of a vertically-launched surface-to-air missile model at an angle of attack of 50 deg and a Reynolds number of 1.1 million was investigated in an NPG wind tunnel. The goal of this thesis is to experimentally validate the pressure measurement system for flowfield variables with elevated levels of turbulence; to determine the location and intensity of the asymmetric vortices in the wake of the VLSAM model at a raised level of freestream turbulence; and to display the asymmetric vortices by velocity mapping and pressure contours. The purpose is to correlate the results with the force measurements of Rabang to provide a greater understanding of the vortex flowfield. The body-only configuration was tested. Two flowfield conditions were treated: the nominal ambient wind tunnel condition, and a condition with grid-generated turbulence of 3.8% turbulence intensity and a dissipation length scale of 1.7 inches. The following conclusions were reached: 1) The relative strengths of the asymmetric vortices can be noted by the sharp spike shape in the ambient condition; this condition becomes diffused and becomes fatter in the turbulent condition; 2) The right side vortex has greater strength than the left side one as seen by the diffusion in the total pressure coefficient and static pressure coefficient contours with and without a turbulent condition; 3) an increase in turbulence intensity tends to reduce the strength of the asymmetric nose-generated vortices and pushes the two asymmetric vortices closer together; 4) and crossflow velocities were examined and were found to indicate the behavior denoted by the pressure contours. Keywords: Surface to air missiles, Vertical launching, High angle of attack, Theses. (EDC).
