He speaks to various individuals who tell him of their hopes and dreams and watches as their spirit gets crushed daily. Slowly starved by a poor diet, he struggles to find a way to legitimize his existence with a racist and hostile government that he does not comprehend. Having lost the ability to walk on his own, Gerardo then must use the prison walls as support in order to get about. Abused by his captors on a daily basis, he begins to lose hope of ever seeing his family again. Forced to sign a paper that waived his right to be a legitimate American, Gerardo is then exiled for a hundred years by a judge just as old. Who is broadcasting from another location to a television screen in a courtroom inside the concentration camp. After being exiled from his home, they then send Gerardo to a land that he has never known. Struggling to survive, Gerardo decides that even though he fears the American government, he must return home in order to provide for his family. Even after being so heavily persecuted, Gerardo still holds on to his love for the country that destroyed his life.

American security culture is relatively stable and includes the deeply held belief that existential threat in the world emanates from the work of evil-doers. The US must therefore sometimes intervene militarily against evil. The European Union (EU) security culture model differs from traditional European iterations and from the American variant. The concept of threat as evil lost salience as Western Europe became more secularist. Threats became problems to manage and resolve. The upsurge in anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner sentiment in the midst of economic crisis undermines this model.

Initially, the EU’s pursuit of regional economic integration and enlargement of membership, at the exclusion of Turkey, strained relations between the two. It was not until 1999, and under pressure from the US, that Turkey was considered as a potential candidate for membership. This book seeks to provide a comprehensive assessment of the fluctuating relations between the EU and Turkey in the twenty-first century. Applying complementary theoretical models to evaluate prospects for Turkey’s membership, analysis includes; Turkey’s report card on the Copenhagen criteria, public opinion in Europe and Turkey, and benefits and challenges based on projection estimates. The results show that whilst both sides stand to make significant gains from Turkey’s membership, the current state of affairs point in the direction of a failure. Examining complex issues surrounding EU-Turkey relations and addressing the critical question of what will happen if Turkey is rejected by the EU, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of politics, Turkey and the wider Middle East.
