Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the principles of Doppler radar and emphasizes the quantitative measurement of meteorological parameters. It illustrates the relation of Doppler radar data and images to atmospherix phenomena such as tornados, microbursts, waves, turbulence, density currents, hurricanes, and lightning. Radar images and photographs of these weather phenomena are included. - Polarimetric measurements and data processing - An updated section on RASS - Wind profilers - Observations with the WSR-88D - An updated treatment of lightning - Turbulence in the planetary boundary layer - A short history of radar - Chapter problem sets

Book Doppler Radar Observations

Download or read book Doppler Radar Observations written by Joan Bech and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doppler radar systems have been instrumental to improve our understanding and monitoring capabilities of phenomena taking place in the low, middle, and upper atmosphere. Weather radars, wind profilers, and incoherent and coherent scatter radars implementing Doppler techniques are now used routinely both in research and operational applications by scientists and practitioners. This book brings together a collection of eighteen essays by international leading authors devoted to different applications of ground based Doppler radars. Topics covered include, among others, severe weather surveillance, precipitation estimation and nowcasting, wind and turbulence retrievals, ionospheric radar and volcanological applications of Doppler radar. The book is ideally suited for graduate students looking for an introduction to the field or professionals intending to refresh or update their knowledge on Doppler radar applications.

Book A Rainfall Rate Sensor

Download or read book A Rainfall Rate Sensor written by Brian E. Morgan and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An instrument designed to measure rainfall rate accurately with fine time resolution is described. Rain water passes from a collector into a reservoir formed between two concentric electrodes while it empties from the reservoir through a small nozzle at its base. Thus, the water depth in the reservoir is related to the inflow or rainfall rate and determines the capacitance between the electrodes. An oscillator having the electrodes as capacitance elements translates the depth changes into frequency variations. The equations relating rainfall rate to frequency are developed and their relevance to the design of the instrument for various specific applications is stressed. Results from laboratory tests as well as actual rainfall measurements are given.

Book Remote Sensing of Water Related Hazards

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Water Related Hazards written by Ke Zhang and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications of remote sensing technology for monitoring and predicting water-related hazards Water-related hazards such as floods and droughts have serious impacts on society. Their incidence has increased in recent decades, a trend set to continue with ongoing climate change. Adaptation and mitigation measures require accurate detection, monitoring, and forecasting, much of which comes from remote sensing technologies. Remote Sensing of Water-Related Hazards takes an interdisciplinary approach, presenting recent advances in the available data, sensors, models, and indicators developed for monitoring and prediction. Volume highlights include: Progress in remote sensing of precipitation, storms, and tornados Different techniques for flood mapping, forecasting, and early warning Integrated approach for predicting flood and landslide cascading hazards Satellite monitoring of water cycle variation, water scarcity, and drought conditions Multi-indicator and multi-sensor approaches for quantifying drought impacts The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.
