Book Thirty Readings in Introductory Sociology

Download or read book Thirty Readings in Introductory Sociology written by Kenneth Alan Gould and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2016-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty Readings in Introductory Sociology, Second Edition, introduces students to the field of sociology in an engaging, accessible manner. Designed to be used alone or with its companion, Ten Lessons in Introductory Sociology, the book is organized around four themes commonly examined in introductory courses: Why sociology? What unites society? What divides society? and How do societies change? Rather than provide encyclopedic responses to such questions, Thirty Readings in Introductory Sociology engages students in critical thinking while presenting key concepts and methods in sociology. Edited by Kenneth A. Gould and Tammy L. Lewis, the text raises sociological questions, applies a sociological lens, illustrates how data are used, and presents core topics in a way that is easy for students to grasp. Each section begins with an introduction by Gould and Lewis, followed by three readings: one classical, one that uses qualitative data, and a third that uses quantitative data.

Book An Introduction to the Sociology of Health and Illness

Download or read book An Introduction to the Sociology of Health and Illness written by Dr Kevin White and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2002-03-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to demonstrate that disease is socially produced and distributed. Becoming sick and unhealthy is not the result of individual misfortune or an accident of nature. It is a consequence of the social, political and economic organization of society. In developing this thesis, the author systematically introduces students to the major sociological explanations of the role and functions of medical explanations of disease. The book situates the student securely in the literature and provides a guide to the strengths and weaknesses of the major sociological approaches. It draws out the essential features of the major sociological contributions and elucidates how an appreciation of the dynamics of class, gender, ethnicity and the sociology of knowledge challenges medical power.

Book Introduction to Sociology

Download or read book Introduction to Sociology written by Theodor W. Adorno and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Sociology distills decades of distinguished work in sociology by one of this century’s most influential thinkers in the areas of social theory, philosophy, aesthetics, and music. It consists of a course of seventeen lectures given by Theodor W. Adorno in May-July 1968, the last lecture series before his death in 1969. Captured by tape recorder (which Adorno called “the fingerprint of the living mind”), these lectures present a somewhat different, and more accessible, Adorno from the one who composed the faultlessly articulated and almost forbiddingly perfect prose of the works published in his lifetime. Here we can follow Adorno’s thought in the process of formation (he spoke from brief notes), endowed with the spontaneity and energy of the spoken word. The lectures form an ideal introduction to Adorno’s work, acclimatizing the reader to the greater density of thought and language of his classic texts. Delivered at the time of the “positivist dispute” in sociology, Adorno defends the position of the “Frankfurt School” against criticism from mainstream positivist sociologists. He sets out a conception of sociology as a discipline going beyond the compilation and interpretation of empirical facts, its truth being inseparable from the essential structure of society itself. Adorno sees sociology not as one academic discipline among others, but as an over-arching discipline that impinges on all aspects of social life. Tracing the history of the discipline and insisting that the historical context is constitutive of sociology itself, Adorno addresses a wide range of topics, including: the purpose of studying sociology; the relation of sociology and politics; the influence of Saint-Simon, Comte, Durkheim, Weber, Marx, and Freud; the contributions of ethnology and anthropology; the relationship of method to subject matter; the problems of quantitative analysis; the fetishization of science; and the separation of sociology and social philosophy.
