Book A Text Book on Graphic Statics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book on Graphic Statics Classic Reprint written by Charles W. Malcolm and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book on Graphic Statics This text was prepared for the author's students in elementary Graphic Statics and Stresses. It has not been the object of the writer to discover new principles, but rather to present the subject clearly and logically. Many texts on Graphic Statics are open to the criticism that they have a tendency to state principles and give constructions without proofs, and the student is therefore compelled to memorize propositions and constructions without being taught the underlying principles. It has been the aim of the writer to give the proofs, together with full explanations of the constructions. No attempt has been made to give elaborate solutions which have little or no practical applications. Particular attention has been given to the order of presentation; and the text has been divided into chapters, articles, and numbered i sections to facilitate easy references. Most of the material in Part I and Part II has been used in printed form by the author's students for several years. It is hoped that the material in Part II, Part III, and Part IV will be found of assistance to the practicing engineer. The author gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to Ira O. Baker, Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Illinois, for many valuable suggestions and criticisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphical Analysis: A d104 Book on Graphic Statics This book has been developed from notes and blue prints prepared by the writer and used in his classes at the University of Illinois. Certain additional material has been added, a part of which has been briefly presented in a number of articles contributed by the writer to the technical press. The notes referred to above were modeled after a set prepared by Dr. N. C. Ricker, several years before, to whom the writer is greatly indebted. Many additional problems might have been added and the discussion greatly extended. This is especially true of Chapters IV and VII to X inclusive. However, it has been thought best to keep the book to smaller proportions, and the writer believes that a thorough mastery of the constructions and solutions here presented will give the student an excellent grasp of the subject. The object has been to deal with the analysis of stresses rather than with design or the computation of loads. Nevertheless it has seemed desirable to give some attention to the determination of loads, and Chapter IX has been devoted almost exclusively to design. Material and ideas have, of course, been drawn from many sources. The writer is especially indebted to Prof. C. R. Clark for assistance in connection with the early part of the work and to Prof. L. H. Provine for encouragement and constructive criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Roofs and Bridges, Vol. 2: Graphic Statics The universal approbation expressed concerning the utility of the blank leaves in Part I leads me to insert them in this volume also. On these pages students may record in permanent form the numerical computations which are always requisite preparatory to graphical analysis, and also make free hand sketches of some of the stress diagrams required in the problems. But I regard it as essential that a few well chosen cases shall be thoroughly and completely worked out as indicated on the plates, which show the manner in which for many years I have required students to finish drawings in Graphic Statics. Here, as in Part I, the minimum as well as the maximum stresses are determined for most of the examples, and all varieties of load ing are treated so that students may be able to work in accord ance with all kinds of specifications. Book The Elements of Graphic Statics

Download or read book The Elements of Graphic Statics written by William Ledyard Cathcart and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Graphic Statics: And of General Graphic Methods This book is an extension of a course of lectures prepared originally by the authors for students of marine and mechanical engineering and naval architecture in their classes at Webb's Academy and Columbia University. Graphical methods have had their widest application in the analysis of the stresses in stationary structures, and therefore the majority of the text-books on this subject have been written for civil engineers. For the use of students of mechanical and marine engineering, and as of possible service to engineers in those professions, this book gives a brief review of the principles of graphics and their application both to framed structures and to mechanism. The text has been illustrated fully by diagrams; occasional references have been furnished to sources of additional information; the principles of Applied Mechanics and of Strength of Materials which are involved in graphic processes have been discussed where necessary; and numerous problems have been assigned to test the students knowledge of the subject. The authors desire to acknowledge their indebtedness to the works of the pioneers in this science - Culmann, Hermann, Cremona, and Reuleaux - whose methods have been freely used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Graphic Statics In England, notwithstanding the valuable contribuo tions to Graphic Statics made by Professor Clerk Maxwell and the late Professor Rankine, the subject can hardly be said to have received the recognition it merits. It is true indeed that the power and facility con ferred by certain isolated processes, such for instance as that 'of stress diagrams, are universally acknow ledged; but these processes have for the most part been viewed as mere artifices for effecting special pur poses, and not as applications Of the principles of an important general method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Graphic Statics Tim study of Graphic Statics, as a subject sui generis, has made but little progress in England, though the great value of numerous Graphic methods has long been fully acknowledged. While in many of the great Engineering Schools of the Continent the subject is deemed worthy of a professional chair, in England it is left to be gleaned almost hap-h'azard. A method more or less is thrown into a course of teaching, according to the predilection, or dislike of the teacher for Graphic modes of procedure. And yet the subject is valuable, not merely as a means to an end, but as a part of mental training. A mind brought up only on mathematical symbols is but half trained: the Graphic is the complement of the Analytical process. And the power conferred by Graphic method is to a large extent at the disposal of those who have had but little mathematical training. The writer once had occasion to explain a practical application of the triangle of forces to a class of working men, who seemed at once to grasp and appreciate it.
