Book A Testing Strategy for MVW f Based Web Applications

Download or read book A Testing Strategy for MVW f Based Web Applications written by Hanan Salim Mneimneh and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development frameworks have become essential tools for the rapid construction of web applications. These frameworks usually encompass a set of interacting desig n patterns or paradigms that are used in the instantiation of a web application. The Model View Workflow-based (MVWf) development framework which combines both the Model View Controller (MVC) design pattern and the workflow paradigm is an e xample of such frameworks. As with any development framework, web applications i nstantiated from MVWf-based web development frameworks (WDFs) often contain faul ts. Testing these applications to detect and locate faults to ensure quality sho uld take advantage of the common and easily obtained state-base characteristics of MVWf-based web applications. In this Thesis, we provide, in the context of Ru by on Rails (ROR), an MVWf-based WDF, a testing strategy that recommends the ama lgamation of both intra-procedural and state-based testing. We show that testing at the intra-procedural level is only effective in catching faults that affect the local control-flow and the data-flow, and thus needs to be complemented with state-based testing (control-flow and data-flow) to effectively catch and locat e faults that occur at the components level of the MVWf paradigm. To evaluate th e practicality of our testing strategy, we implemented a visual testing environm ent with fault zoom-in capabilities within ROR and conducted two experimental st udies to assess the error-detection and fault localization capabilities. Our exp erimental studies showed that our testing strategy can increase the chances of c atching faults that would be otherwise traditionally caught by the more exhausti ve class-based data-flow testing.

Book A Testing Methodology for the Validation of Web Applications

Download or read book A Testing Methodology for the Validation of Web Applications written by Gerardo Morales and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to ensure the proper behaviour of the functional aspects of web based systems. To achieve this goal, we proposed two different test approaches: the active approach and the passive approach. Our goal is to automatically generate a suite of active test scenarios that will be applied on a system under test to examine its compliance with respect to its functional specification, and, when interrupting the normal flow of operation is problematic, to observe the system under test with passive testing. The goal of this work is developing a method and a set of tools to test web based systems using the active and passive testing approaches. Concerning the active testing approach, we present a methodology to cover the end-to-end testing process (from building the model until the test execution). This work tackles the gap between, on the one hand, generating abstract test cases from abstract models and, on the other hand, developing methods allowing concretizing these tests and automatically applying them on a real applications. Then, concerning the passive test approach, we present a methodology and a new tool for observing the behaviour of the communications of the web applications with external web services (for SOA based web applications) in order to check whether the observed behaviour is correct. All the methodologies and tools presented in this work are applied on two industrial case studies, Mission Handler and Travel Reservation Service, in order to validate our contributions in active and passive testing respectively.

Book Cost effective Techniques for User session based Testing of Web Applications

Download or read book Cost effective Techniques for User session based Testing of Web Applications written by Sreedevi Sampath and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased use of web-based applications by businesses, government and consumers to perform their daily operations has led to the need for reliable, well-tested web applications. A short time to market, large user community, demand for con tinuous availability, and frequent updates motivate automated cost-effective testing strategies. One promising approach to testing the functionality of web applications leverages user-session data collected by web servers. This approach, called user-session-based testing, avoids the problem of generating artificial test cases by capturing real user interactions---rather than tester interactions---and utilizing the user sessions as representative of user behavior. The user sessions provide test data not anticipated during initial stages of testing. User-session-based testing focuses testing on parts of the application frequently used by the user. However, test preparation and execution quickly become impractical with a large number of captured sessions, which is typical in a frequently used application. This dissertation presents automated cost-effective testing strategies for web-based applications developed by applying a mathematical technique called concept analysis (with varying input parameters) to cluster user-session data. The proposed testing strategies are applicable in the beta/maintenance testing phases of the lifecycle of the application. The proposed strategies are particularly useful in the absence of traditional testing requirements and specifications. The research applies concept analysis to cluster user sessions. To avoid processing large user session data sets, a set of heuristics for test suite selection are applied and incremental test suite update is performed on-the-fly in the presence of an evolving application and evolving user sessions. The clustering techniques and selection heuristics are motivated by analyzing user sessions. User sessions are also analyzed to understand the longitudinal usage of the application which assists in focusing maintenance efforts. In addition, an automated testing framework to effectively test web applications is developed. The effectiveness of the reduced suites is evaluated with several empirical studies to determine their program coverage and fault detection effectiveness.
