Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Manual, of the American Temperance Society, for the Young Men of the United States And though the facts and the reasonings are applied in many cases particularly to ardent spirit, and are addressed to the various classes of persons in the community; yet they may be applied to intoxicating, liq nor of; allsorts, in proportion to its intoxicating power, and are of great importance, especially to young men. It is earnestly desired, therefore, that every young man in the United States may be supplied with a copy of this Manual, and may become familiarly, and thoroughly acquainted with its contents. It is also desired, that every person, into whose hand it may come, will take special pains to give to it a universal circulation. And should all persons be led to abstain from the use, as a beverage, of that which intoxicates, their health, usefulness, and happiness would be greatly promoted, and drunkenness, with all its evils to the body and soul, would universally, and for ever cease. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Manual I. Ever since man turned away from God as a source of enjoyment, and from his service as a means of obtaining it, he his been prone to seek it in some improper bodily or mental gratification. Of all those gratifications to which he has resorted for this purpose, few, if any, have been more destructive to him than that which results from the use as a beverage, of intoxicating liquor. Though it affords a momentary gratification, at the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. It tends to form an artificial, unnecessary, and dangerous appetite, and thus to lead to drunkenness and ruin. That ingredient in fermented and distilled liquors which is the cause of intoxication, is not the product of creation. Download or read book Reforming Japan written by Elizabeth Dorn Lublin and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1902 members of the Japanese Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) submitted a petition to the National Diet to abolish the custom of rewarding good deeds and patriotic service with the bestowal of sake cups. Alcohol production and consumption, its members argued, harmed individuals, endangered public welfare, and wasted vital resources. The sake cup petition was only one initiative in a wide-ranging program to reform public and private behaviour in Japan. Between 1886 and 1912, the WCTU launched campaigns to eliminate prostitution, eradicate drinking and smoking, spread Christianity, and improve the lives of women. As Elizabeth Dorn Lublin shows, members did not passively accept and propagate government policy but felt a duty to shape it by defining social problems and influencing opinion. Certain their beliefs and reforms were essential to Japan's advancement, members couched their calls for change in the rhetorical language of national progress. Ultimately, the WCTU's activism belies received notions of women's public involvement and political engagement in Meiji Japan. This fascinating study of women bound by God, home, and country will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese History, religious studies, and gender studies.
