Mean tidal amplitude at the head of the Estuary is 6.1 m, which combined with the considerable discharge from the St. Croix, contributes to the generally high suspended load characteristic of the estuary. The spring and autumn phytoplankton maxima are therefore restricted vertically by rapid light attenuation and distributed horizontally in somewhat patch fashion. The groups of phytoplankton covered in this guide include diatoms, the loricate chrysophytes of the genus Binobryon, and the dinoflagellates.
