The area of morphology represented here exhaustively is contemporary (generative) theoretical morphology, interpreted broadly enough to include theoretically interesting structuralist works, works aimed at explaining deep motivations of morphology or pertinent to contemporary theoretical morphology. Selected descriptive works have been included as well; it is not at all simple to draw a line between descriptive works of theoretical interest and fundamentally theoretical works, and in addition we hope to provide entry points into a variety languages for morphologists seeking language-specific evidence for general hypotheses.

The book makes a major point: participles are not verb forms which behave like adjectives, but actually are adjectives, linked with verbs via derivation. It argues that observed differences between participles and adjectives, which in the past have prompted linguists to draw a category distinction between them, are in reality due to the non-prototypical semantics of participles – a feature also found in other types of adjectives, with strikingly identical effects. This analysis then accounts for the word formation of adjectives such as boring, tired, drunk, which has always been mysterious. The book investigates the consequences of this analysis for our understanding of gerunds and V-ing-N compounds. With its comprehensive study of -ing forms, the book calls into question a number of widely-held assumptions – regarding the distinction between derivation and inflection, and the role of semantics in syntactic and morphological analysis. Starting from where the author's 1983 dissertation left off, the book argues that there is syntactic constraint that clauses (small and tensed) are constructed out of a one-place unsaturated expression, the predicate, which must be applied to a syntactic argument, its subject. The author shows that this predication relation cannot be reduced to a thematic relation or a projection of argument structure, but must be a purely syntactic constraint. Chapters in the book show how the syntactic predication relation is semantically interpreted, and how the predication relation explains constraints on DP-raising and on the distribution of pleonastics in English. The second half of the book extends the theory of predication to cover copular constructions; it includes an account of the structure of small clauses in Hebrew, of the use of `be' in predicative and identity sentences in English, and concludes with a study of the meaning of the verb `be'.

It defends a straightforward extraposition-from-NP analysis (on which the cleft clause is a restrictive relative, modifying the initial it) and claims that all types of it-cleft involve nominal predication. Support for this analysis comes from three main areas: (a) the central role of definiteness in the creation of specificational meaning, (b) the existence and makeup of predicational (and proverbial) it-clefts, and (c) the early, historical it-cleft data. In addition, the book contains a sizeable diachronic component, drawing data from the Penn Parsed Corpora of Historical English and from the International Corpus of English - Great Britain. This investigation informs and advances what is an otherwise simple account of the English it-cleft, explaining how and why the configuration has developed an assortment of peculiar, construction-specific properties over time.

For some time, neurolinguistic research on syntax was heavily influenced by theoretical linguistic approaches, which characterize in detail the nature of syntactic representations. A rough consensus has been that the primary region supporting syntax is Broca’s area, and that syntactic deficits in aphasia exist primarily due to damage or degeneration of this region, commonly occurring in Broca’s aphasia and nonfluent/agrammatic PPA. With respect to temporal dynamics of syntactic processing, neurophysiological research on syntax focused on specific event-related potentials such as the ELAN and P600, thought to index phrase structure building and syntactic reanalyses. However, the research landscape has changed substantially in the last several years with new methodologies and theoretical perspectives, and there is little consensus on the neurobiological foundations of syntax or the role of linguistic theory in guiding research. The goal of this Research Topic is to reassess our understanding of syntax and the brain in light of these developments. Specifically, it is designed to address the following set of major questions:
