Ranging from Tin Pan Alley to Thelonious Monk to hip hop, the contributors go beyond repertory and biography to explore four critical yet overlooked areas: the impact of performance; patronage's role in creating music and finding a place to play it; personal identity; and the ways cultural and ethnographic circumstances determine the music that emerges from the creative process. Many of the articles also look at how a piece of music becomes initially popular and then exerts a lasting influence in the larger global culture. The result is an insightful state-of-the-field examination that doubles as an engaging short course on our complex, multifaceted musical heritage. Contributors: Karen Ahlquist, Amy C. Download or read book The Symphonies written by Andrei Bely and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrei Bely is best known for the modernist masterwork Petersburg, a paradigmatic example of how modern writers strove to evoke the fragmentation of language, narrative, and consciousness. In the early twentieth century, Bely embarked on his life as an artist with texts he called “symphonies”—works experimenting with genre and sound, written in a style that shifts among prosaic, poetic, and musical. This book presents Bely’s four Symphonies—“Dramatic Symphony,” “Northern Symphony,” “The Return,” and “Goblet of Blizzards”—fantastically strange stories that capture the banality of life, the intimacy of love, and the enchantment of art. The Symphonies are quintessential works of modernist innovation in which Bely developed an evocative mythology and distinctive aesthetics. Influenced by Russian Symbolism, Bely believed that the role of modern artists was to imbue seemingly small details with cosmic significance. The Symphonies depict the drabness of daily life with distinct irony and satire—and then soar out of turn-of-the-century Moscow into the realm of the infinite and eternal. They conjure worlds that resemble our own but reveal elements of artifice and magic, hinting at mystical truths and the complete transfiguration of life. Showcasing the protean quality of Bely’s language and storytelling, Jonathan Stone’s translation of the Symphonies features some of the most captivating and beguiling writing of Russia’s Silver Age.

Book excerpt: In his touching and amusing memoir Chance Meetings, William Saroyan gives us a glimpse of the characters that have left an indelible impression on his mind for years to come. From the Armenian neighbourhood of his childhood to the Parisian streets of his formative years, we meet the people that have inspired, perplexed, angered and enamoured him. We meet finely drawn personalities like the Armenian Cabinet maker, that planed wood whilst his mind composed beautiful poems, who would call him into his shop and embarrass Saroyan with his recitations. We visit the tiny desk of the only famous writer in San Francisco, who kindly replied to Saroyan's letter and invited him into his office. And the playful image of his mother, who would caricature everyone from the postman to the president with hilarious precision. First published in 1978, Chance Meetings builds a picture of the author through the people that surrounded him throughout his life, who shaped and formed a great writer, and were immortalised by his words.

Download or read book Commemorating Gallipoli through Music written by John Morgan O'Connell and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the relationship between music and memory as it relates to the Gallipoli Campaign (1915-6). Drawing upon a wide variety of sources in many languages, it explores the multiple ways in which music is employed to remember and to forget, to celebrate and to commemorate a victory (on the part of the Central Powers) and a defeat (on the part of the Allied forces) in the Dardanelles during the First World War (1914-8). Further, it argues that commemoration itself can be viewed as an ‘instrument of war’. In particular, it investigates the complex positionality of individual actors during the centennial commemorations of the Gallipoli landings (24 April, 2015) where the Australians and the Turks most notably have employed music to reimagine the past, both nationalities invoking the ‘Gallipoli spirit’ (tr. ‘Çanakkale ruhu’) to advance a nationalist agenda and a resurgent militarism through the selective memorialization of an imperial past. The book interrogates through music the ambivalent position of minorities. With specific reference to the Irish (amongst the British) and the Armenians (amongst the Ottomans), it shows how song might serve both to articulate a nationalist defiance and an imperialist consensus during a tumultuous period of irredentism. By uncovering the complex pathways of musical transmission, it demonstrates through musical analysis how the colonized could become the colonizer (in the case of the Irish) or a minority might conform to a majority (in the case of the Armenians). Further, the publication looks at the uneasy alliance between the Turks and the Germans. It focuses on a German musician (as an imperial bandmaster) and Germanic entrepreneurs (in the recording industry) who entertained or who served the German Mission in Istanbul. Here, it considers by way of musical composition the shared wish on the part of the Germans and the Turks to create a Lebensraum in Asia.

Book excerpt: In a world where the cacophony of life often drowns the subtler notes of existence, emerges a poignant narrative of connection that defies the conventional means of expression. "The Melody of Serendipity" beckons readers into a realm where the collision of two lives becomes a harmonious masterpiece scripted by destiny itself. Within the pages of this captivating tale, we meet Julian, a gifted composer whose once-vibrant symphonies have succumbed to the dissonance of a harsh reality. Battling against the rigors of an unforgiving music industry, Julian grapples with a creative crisis that distances him from the very heartstrings he once strummed with fervor. On a parallel trajectory is Madeline, a dancer who orchestrates her emotions with the eloquence of her hands. Deafness from birth has not silenced her spirit; rather, it has nurtured an artistic language that transcends the boundaries of spoken word. As her graceful movements etch poetry into the air, Madeline becomes an embodiment of the emotions she conveys. The duet of fate brings Julian and Madeline together, and the silence between them becomes a canvas on which a unique kinship unfolds. Their collaboration traverses the realms of sound and silence, birthing an unparalleled harmony that challenges conventional communication. This harmony breathes life into "The Melody of Serendipity," a mesmerizing performance uniting Julian's enchanting melodies with Madeline's ethereal dance. In this alchemical partnership, they unlock the core of artistry to evoke sentiments that language can scarcely capture. As the narrative unfurls, the duo contends with skepticism and adversities that threaten to mute their shared melody. Yet, Julian and Madeline's spirits remain resolute, and together they embark on a journey of self-discovery. The crescendo of their connection leads them to a climactic performance, where they unravel not only the depths of their own souls but also the prejudices of a world bound by conventional norms. However, "The Melody of Serendipity" is more than just a chronicle of artistic convergence; it is an ode to human perseverance, the potency of passion, and the allure of diversity. Julian and Madeline's expedition resonates as an ode to the unbreakable resilience of the human spirit. Their story stands as a testament to the ability of shared creativity to transcend boundaries, inspiring those who bear witness to the narrative to embrace their own individuality. As readers journey through the pages of this enchanting tale, they become partakers in the symphony of Julian and Madeline's serendipitous connection. Through the eloquent prose, the dance of words mirrors the dance of emotions, and the melody of the narrative reverberates long after the final page is turned. Download or read book Non Western Popular Music written by Tony Langlois and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides readers with a diverse and contemporary overview of research in the field. Drawing upon scholarly writing from a range of disciplines and approaches, it provides case studies from a wide range of 'non Western' musical contexts. In so doing the volume attends to the central themes that have emerged in this area of popular music studies; cultural politics, identity and the role of technology. This collection does not seek to establish a new theoretical paradigm, but being primarily aimed at researchers and students, offers as comprehensive a view of the research that has been carried out over the last few decades as possible, given the global scope of the subject. Inevitably, the experience of globalisation itself runs through many of the contributions, not only because musicians find themselves part of an immense flow of international culture, technology and finance, but also because Western scholarship can also be considered an aspect of such a flow. The articles selected for the volume take different disciplinary approaches; many are close ethnographic descriptions of musical practices whilst others take a more historical view of a musical 'scene' or even a single musician. Some essays consider the effects of emerging technologies upon the production, dissemination and consumption of music, whilst the political context is central to other authors. The collection as a whole serves as a resource for those who wish to be better acquainted with the diversity of research that has been carried out into non-western pop, whilst also highlighting the broader themes that have, so far, shaped academic approaches to the subject.
